- Four days after the robbery Home Secretary Brooke puts Flying Squad Chief Superintendent Tommy Butler in charge of the case. Though a dour loner and not a popular colleague he assembles an efficient team including Inspector Frank Williams, who knows Reynolds of old and places him high on his suspect list, and Sergeant Jack Slipper. The discovery of a suitcase containing stolen notes leads to the first arrest whilst a tip-off takes Butler to the farmhouse HQ and a mass of forensic evidence. This begins to yield results despite Butler's superiors' Wanted poster campaign which encourages hoax callers and sends the criminals into hiding. Soon, however, Williams' work with his informants based on his suspect list starts to reel in the robbers and the cash. In January 1964 most of them stand trial and three months later receive sentences of thirty years. The police team celebrates but not Butler who, though due for retirement, stays on until the job is completed and, three years on, arrests the last gang member at large, Bruce Reynolds.
- After a bungled raid which kills an innocent man young DS Steve Arnott faces disgrace. However he is transferred to the anti-corruption squad, whose head, superintendent Ted Hastings, gives him a "very special case" to investigate - DCI Tony Gates, recently awarded a medal for heroic conduct but with a suspiciously high arrest rate. Hastings tries to get Gates on minor bribery charges, in vain, and is unaware that the married Gates has covered up a fatal hit-and-run by his lover, businesswoman Jackie Laverty. Meanwhile DC Kate Fleming joins Gates's team and tells Steve she is investigating him from the inside following the deaths of two drug dealers.

- Following a vicious attack on a wages van at Heathrow airport in November 1962 the gang concerned are disappointed that the haul is less than expected and their leader, Bruce Reynolds, despite his wife's request that he eschews crime, is greedy for a bigger heist. This comes about when an anonymous Ulsterman alerts the gang to the Glasgow to Euston mail train, said to be carrying a million pounds. Recruiting more villains Reynolds begins his meticulous plan to halt the train with false signals at a lonely Buckinghamshire crossing and, on August 8 1963, a night later than planned, the robbery takes place. Despite Reynolds' desire to play down violence train driver Jack Mills is injured and the getaway bungled as the gang, dressed as soldiers, hole up in a farmhouse. The haul is also far more than they imagined and Reynolds is conscious that it will be harder to dispose of as the robbers go their separate ways. Soon afterwards Reynolds sees in a newspaper headline that he is a suspect and a wanted man.

Lindsay's accusations also cause friction between Hastings and Steve, whilst Dryden's driving offence attracts the press so to save himself he strikes a deal naming Lindsay as the officer under investigation. Kate discovers a body, apparently that of the missing Carly, and returns to see Lindsay, who claims her ex-lover Dryden set her up. Kate makes a call which seems to support this whilst Cottan gets evidence to prove Jayne was on the take.

Rich Akers is also pulled in after £20,000 of which he claims ignorance is found under the floor boards at his house. Hargreaves is convinced this was the bribe given Jayne to betray the escort and when Steve and Kate examine Jayne's car they discover a tracking device though Hargreaves is not keen for its revelation. Furthermore Cottan and Hargreaves see video evidence suggesting that Tommy had a grievance against Dryden, whose affair with Lindsay is now proved. Lindsay gets a day release from prison to visit her mother, in hospital after a stroke, but on the way back the prison van is hi-jacked and she is abducted by two policemen, Prasad, identified by Carly's parents as her apparent boyfriend, and Cole.

They discover that John sent flowers to a young girl, Lizzie Lancaster and a search of her flat reveals she is in possession of a classified military file and a press cutting of an incident where military personnel were injured by a chemical experiment on Salisbury Plain. The women save Lizzie from a hit and run and Jean correctly assumes that she is Alice's daughter. The Bletchley circle believe both mother and daughter have been set up by John's killer who was also responsible for the Salisbury Plain incident.

Discovering that the injured soldiers - all clearly guinea pigs as none had families and treated at the same military hospital as Timothy had been, a reluctant Susan visits, claiming she needs his medical records for his overseas posting. She locates a horribly injured young soldier who confirms that he and other victims were deliberately chosen for the heartless experiment but Susan is removed by the military and forced to explain to her husband her past at Bletchley and her current mission. Meanwhile Millie, Jean and Lucy learn that John was employed at Porton Down, a government establishment testing chemical weaponry run by Professor Masters, whom they visit. He is a deranged patriot who believed John and Lizzie were Russian spies and the trio are in danger from him unless Susan can prevail upon the honest colonel at the hospital to help them and save Alice.

- Following the deaths of Georgia and the witness it is Steve who gets a grilling as to the police presence at the hospital whilst Lindsay is accused of attacking her neighbour, which she denies. Steve discovers that a nurse on the witness's ward, Claire Tindall, was threatened into giving the killer access by a man she knows as Joe, but whom she is unable to identify. Lindsay continues to search for vanished teenager Carly Kirk and Kate is drafted in as her assistant - in reality a move to try and get Lindsay to admit her guilt - but Lindsay sees through the ruse. After Kate's cover is blown Lindsay is questioned again and claims that she rang the hospital to ask that the witness exonerate her but she is disbelieved and Hastings arrests her for conspiracy. At her interview she points out that Steve visited Claire unofficially and Hastings has financial problems and a broken marriage that could make him just as culpable but she is nonetheless held in custody. Meanwhile DCC Dryden finds himself in the frame for a driving offence supposedly committed by his wife.

They are initially reluctant until Susan proves that the killer is using a railway timetable to select his victims by plotting their journeys. By following the killer's pattern and cross-referencing information they deduce that the next victim will be Mary Lawrence and she will be murdered at Upton Park. They hurry to their destination but find they are too late.

Susan goes to see the man's psychiatrist, unaware that she is facing the man himself.
