- Part One: Constance, the second wife of General Haverhill, befriends the officer's son, Frank, who has been ostracized. On the night of April 12th, 1861, she gives a ball at Charleston, S.C. Frank gets word to Mrs. Haverhill that he is hiding in the city. The father will not be reconciled, but sends the boy a miniature of Constance. At the ball are Col. Kerchival West and his sister, Madeline, Robert Illingham and his sister, Gertrude. Fort Sumter is fired upon and Illingham declares his allegiance to the Confederacy. He is deeply in love with Madeline West, whose brother fondly admires Gertrude. Capt. Thornton insults Mrs. Haverhill and is called upon to fight a duel with West. Through a peculiar circumstance General Haverhill suspects Colonel West. Frank enlists in his father's regiment under another name. He has grown a beard and is not recognized. One year later the Confederates make a night attack on the Federals and Frank is made prisoner. Capt. Thornton, in the Confederate service, takes Constance's miniature from the captive at Richmond. Frank and several companions make a daring escape. Part Two: In 1863 the Federal army invades the Shenandoah Valley. Col. West accompanies General Haverhill, who makes headquarters at the Illingham home. Madeline West comes to visit Gertrude. The sweethearts are brought together but Gertrude will not acknowledge her love for the gallant Col. West. An expedition is sent to capture a Confederate signal tower, with Frank Haverhill in command. He loses his life in the perilous undertaking. Later Col. Illingham is captured, but is granted parole by his old friend. Col. West. West secures the miniature from Thornton, when the latter is captured, but later he is wounded by Thornton and General Haverhill is more embittered than ever when he finds the picture on West's person. Part Three: The Confederates have planned an attack on the Federals during the absence of General Phil Sheridan. A terrific battle is waged, in which Col. West is taken prisoner. Twenty miles away, Sheridan hears the cannonading and makes a wild dash toward Winchester, to assume command. The Federals are unable to withstand the fearful assault and flee in panic. Sheridan arrives, rallies his men and thwarts the enemy. Gertrude becomes a second Evangeline in her search for Col. West. She finally locates him just as he is released from prison and they visit a little church near the battlefield. In 1865 General Haverhill visits his wife in Washington, still thinking her unfaithful. Gertrude arrives and delivers to Constance and Frank's widow a message which was written in his last hour. The general is brought to a realization of his wife's nobility.
- On his wedding eve Henry Halleck opens a sealed envelope which has been handed down to each generation, and learns that the family is cursed with a lust for drink. He signs the pledge which bears the signatures of his fathers. Two years later he is a widower, with a son, Jack. Jack grows to manhood and not possessing the strength of his father, falls into evil ways. Jack pays the penalty for his weakness and Halleck takes the grandson, Harry, into his home. Many years later Harry becomes engaged to Anna, a charming girl of the neighborhood, and on his wedding eve he, too signs the pledge. But Harry has inherited his father's weakness and the old man's heart is broken. Forbes, a young man of the north, visits the old home and falls in love with Anna. Harry succeeds in discrediting his rival in a most cowardly manner and marries the girl. After the ceremony, Harry, made bold by liquor, jokingly confesses to Anna how he has deceived her and she locks herself in her room. The fox hunt is to take place next day. At the Hunt Breakfast Harry, unable to overcome his weakness, drinks heavily and insists upon riding a spirited horse. In the chase he tries to make a fence and is thrown to the ground. He is carried back to the breakfast room where old Halleck is left alone with his dead. Later Forbes gains from Anna a promise for the days to come.
- When Rose McDonald and Frank Mosby became engaged it appears that the deadly feud which has long existed between the families has come to an end. The betrothal is held at the McDonald cabin. All seem willing to forget past differences save McDonald, the bride's father and Joe, the groom's young brother. The day of the wedding arrives. Frank prevails upon the family to leave all weapons at home. He sends them ahead. Joe has informed Frank that he no longer regards him as a brother. It happens that Joe, while hunting, accidentally shoots his little sister. Frank on the way to the wedding discovers the little one's plight and takes her home, sending Joe to the McDonald cabin with an explanation. But Joe does not go, although he comes back and tells Frank that he has carried the word. The guests become impatient. Old McDonald is not at all hospitable and contends that Frank does not expect to marry the daughter. One unfortunate incident follows another and the old feud is about to be renewed when the bridegroom learns of his brother's treachery and carries the wounded little one to the McDonald cabin. He arrives amidst a hot battle and, ending hostilities, takes his place by Rose's side while the minister performs the belated ceremony.
- Bud, a mountain youth, operates an illicit "still." Myra, his sweetheart, objects to his mode of earning a living and pleads with him to give it up. Bud laughs at the girl and tells her that women know nothing of the sterner affairs of men. She loves him dearly and when she finds that she cannot dissuade him from his illegal work, she determines to destroy the "still," Dick Hartley, an author, is roaming through the mountains in search of local color. He takes lodgings at Myra's cabin and Bud, jealous of his sweetheart, immediately becomes suspicious. The young man quickly allays his suspicions, however, and gradually wins his confidence and respect. The gift of a fancy fishing outfit firmly cements the friendship. Myra steals away one afternoon carrying an axe. She goes to the "still" and smashes the large retorts and demijohns of contraband liquor. Bud promises to show Hartley how to make moonshine. They start out through the woods together. While some distance away Bud suddenly halts, quickly raises his rifle to his shoulder and fires. He has seen the dim figure of his sweetheart in the distance, breaking up his plant and mistakes her for a revenue officer. The two men run forward where the mountaineer discovers to his sorrow that he has shot Myra. Full of remorse, he carries the girl to her mother's cabin, with Hartley's aid. Myra is only lightly wounded and gladly forgives Bud when he promises to seek a legitimate way of earning his living.

On a parallel road trip, a young girl, Berry, leads her mother on a quest to photograph UFO's, presumably for initiation into a society of witnesses. True motives involving the denial of her father's death, however, push below the surface of Berry's mission. Moving deeper into open country, the mother struggling to understand her daughter's feelings, the two women unknowingly get closer to the point where their own journey will converge with that of Edge and Lennox.
