- Right after Disneyland opens in Anaheim, California, in 1955, a toy salesman in town for a convention brings his wife with him so they can both go to Disneyland. They stay at a rundown place called the Sunset Motel nearby. Soon the wife is having an affair with a man staying at the motel. The husband hires a psychotic criminal to spy on them, the wife and her lover plan to murder the husband, and the voyeuristic motel manager is spying on everybody.

When he finishes his report, he returns to the equipment rental store to discover that he was too late and the store is closed, so he'll have to keep the equipment for another day. As a lark he sets up the equipment to "spy" on the residents of a nearby building, but soon finds himself caught up in the dark world of voyeurism, begins to descend further and further into that world and realizes that it is becoming a disturbing obsession with him.

Things take a turn for the worse when his spending on her gets to the point where it's placing the firm dangerously close to bankruptcy. Something has to be done.
- Young stenographer Chickie Bryce dreams of marrying a millionaire. Until then, though, she is content to carry on with Barry, a lawyer from a nearby office. The relationship soon becomes serious, but one day Chickie meets an actual millionaire, Jake, who sweeps her off her feet. Barry tries to win her back, but his efforts are stymied by Ila, a girl who is in love with Barry and doesn't want him to get back with Chickie.
- When Tom Redding's wealthy father dies and it turns out that all he left Tom was a mountain of debts, all of his "friends" desert him--except young Mary Austin. Determined to get out from all his debt, Tom heads west and eventually strikes it rich with an oil well. Now wealthy, he hatches a plan to get even with his "friends" in his hometown--by pretending to return home broke but having a colleague secretly buy up as much property in town as he can.
- Young mother Mildred doesn't know that her husband Walter is cheating on her. One night she attends a party with a friend of her husband's, and the man gets drunk and begins groping her when they get home. Her husband sees this and uses it as an excuse to sue his wife for divorce. In the ensuing trial he wins due to fraudulent evidence and gets custody of their child. Complications ensue.

John and her parents try to dissuade her from carrying on with Oscar, but the more they try, the more determined she becomes to pursue him. Complications ensue.
- Naval Academy upperclassman James Randall falls for Patricia Lawrence, a plebe's sister. She is engaged to the wealthy but ne'er-do-well Basil Courtney, who comes up with a scheme to discredit his rival that involves a "loose" woman and framing James for a technical violation that can get him kicked out of the Academy. Complications ensue.

The girl is a Las Vegas showgirl and the boyfriend turns out to be a professional killer, and he has no intention of letting the motorist finish the trip.

As he makes the rounds of both the Hollywood community and European movie centers for ideas, he fantasizes about movie scenarios of his everyday situations, influenced by his movie idols, some of whom he actually meets, like Italian director Federico Fellini and French actress Jeanne Moreau. He's also wondering what to do about his personal life: does it make sense for him to "move up" with his wife Beth and their two daughters from their middle-class lifestyle? If so, filmmaking must not only achieve his main purpose of saying something meaningful, but also must be commercially successful. But must the need for commercial success ultimately take artistic control out of his hands?
- Irene, a feisty Irish girl in Philadelphia, clashes with her family and walks out, heading to New York City to seek fame and fortune. She gets a job as a dressmaker's model and becomes involved with Donald, the scion of a wealthy family. Donald's mother doesn't approve of Irene and sets out to discredit her in Donald's eyes.
- While traveling by train from Denver to Washington, DC, wealthy young Grenfall Lorry meets a beautiful young girl. When they are accidentally left behind in a mining town, they race through the mountains and finally catch it. They travel to Washington and have a great time, but they soon part. They meet again later in the small European country of Graustark, where Grenfall and his friend Harry rescue her from kidnappers, and they then discover that she is actually the country's Princess Yetiva. She is engaged to Prinze Lorenz of Asphan in order to pay off Graustark's enormous debt from the war, but Lorenz is murdered and Grenfall is framed for the crime. Complications ensue.
- Chappel and Basil are both officers in the British Guards and also close friends. They both fall in love with Eleanor. Basil is so smitten that he sets up a situation in which Eleanor believes that Chappel has another woman, and she chooses Basil. Chappel, devastated, turns to drink and is soon thrown out of the army in disgrace. Complications ensue.

He and his friend Jeremy are bought by the vicious Col. Bishop, who purchases them for his niece Arabella. Blood rallies the other slaves to rebel against their slavery; they escape and take over a Spanish galleon. Blood and his crew become pirates and the scourge of the Caribbean. England, at war with France and losing, offers him a commission in the Royal Navy if he will fight for them. Blood, who has no love for the French but even less for the English, has to decide whether it's better for he and his men to fight with the English or against them.

- An elderly woman in a Baltimore neighborhood finds out that a somewhat slow-witted neighbor is being put up for local office by some shady politicians who have no interest in their neighborhood but are interested in getting their hands on the money that comes into it.
