- After being accused of murder, suspect Adam North asks the victim's best friend, Petrocelli, to defend him.
- Country Boy White is accused of murdering a man he had an argument with the night of the death. The case turns out to be connected to an old hit-and-run case.

Dusty is suspected of having murdered Mannie Tyler, a film producer, and all appearances are unfortunately against him. But Petrocelli's favorite actor is positive he has nothing to do with the crime.

- In the dead of night, the residents of a sprawling apartment complex hear two rapid-fire gunshots. They race to the apartment of a young woman living alone, and find the body of another resident on the floor near her bed. The young woman claims that the man raided her room and she shot him in self-defense. The District Attorney believes part of the story, but claims the victim wasn't threatening the young woman and files manslaughter charges against her. But that's not half of the story. The young woman is blind. She only heard the intruder and panicked, grabbing a pistol from her bed stand drawer and firing wildly. One bullet drilled the victim through the heart -- but the other one can't be found. When the weapon is examined, only one round is spent. Did everybody hear a phantom second shot? Petrocelli cross-examines the woman, handing her an "unloaded" pistol and asking her to pull the trigger on his count. He's actually loaded a blank cartridge into the chamber and she can't tell the difference, so when the gun detonates she cries out that she's killed her lawyer. That makes Petrocelli believe that maybe she didn't kill anyone. Some snooping around the San Remo, Arizona (actually Tucson) police department reveals that the dead man was an undercover cop -- giving somebody plenty of motive to murder him beforehand and dump his corpse in the young woman's lap!
- A young man hires a beautiful young nurse to live with and care for the man's elderly, wheelchair-bound grandfather. The nurse's "charm" hides a sadist who couldn't care less about her patient's welfare. The young man soon finds out that his grandfather is being shamefully neglected. One night, the nurse is found murdered, a hypodermic needle slammed into the base of her brain. It's clear that she was killed during an argument, and the grandson is the prime suspect. When the grandson asks Petrocelli to quiz his grandfather, Petrocelli learns that the grandfather died that same night of one of his numerous illnesses. When the case goes to trial, damning testimony is provided by an old rancher friend of the grandfather's who visited the house just after the murder and found both bodies. Petrocelli's only chance is to poke a hole in the testimony, based on a sixteen-minute gap where the rancher says he was reminiscing over his old friend -- or was he covering up evidence?
- Mark Orland was a successful writer, and his latest idea of a book made many of his old-time friends angry - including Emily Burke who was seen escaping the crime scene moments after a gunshot is heard.
- When a woman is found dead in the desert, a young drifter who was the last seen with her is arrested cause his things were found with her. Petrocelli is assigned to defend him and the guy claims she picked him up and took him to a motel where he was with her but left as soon as he could and left his bag that had his things in it that were found with her body in her car. Petrocelli learns that the woman was the wife of a prominent businessman who saw other guys on the side. Which leads Petrocelli to think it could be her husband or one of her guys who killed her.
- Andy Warburton is kidnapped by two of his friends and Tony is asked to bring the ransom. It was all a joke, but as Tony arrives, he finds out that Andy is kidnapped again - this time for real.
- Pete's friend John Deiman is a cop who is said to have murdered his wife's lover but insists he's innocent so Pete asks Tony to help him out.
- An elderly lady needs Petrocelli's help when she's accused of killing the car dealer who fired her son from his job at the dealership.
- When Maggie's visiting Uncle Roy is accused of murdering a prostitute, Tony snoops around the luxury hotel where she worked, hoping to clear him.
- Sam Horton dies after his private plane explodes during a flight and the police thinks his daughter, Barbara killed him because of an argument.
- Mr. Woodward makes model-like photos of pretty girls including Dorothy, making Charlie very angry, as he almost kills him with a putter. But an eyewitness, Mrs. Moran states he indeed killed him.
- Tony's childhood friend Frankie Copa (now a professional boxer) needs a defense attorney after his manager is beaten to death and Frankie is found on the scene.
- Dimitri Petrarkis tries to convince Nick Fenton with a gun to leave his daughter alone. Dimitri gets a hit on the head and when he wokes up, Nick is found dead, murdered with Dimitri's gun.
- Billy Fletcher is accused of murdering the private investigator who blackmailed him but he says he was only following him according to the plan of his father.
- Petrocelli defends a hippie motorcyclist charged with arson after a hotel goes up in flames. After the biker was denied a room, he was heard threatening the manager with burning down the hotel.

- Dr. Leo is arrested for murdering Rita Philips, the main financial supporter of Dr. Leo's hospital. The motive should be the end of support, but Petrocelli thinks the real killer must have a better motive.
