She finds out in the end, however, that her husband's character is of such strength that she "holds herself" to him, and reaches the conclusion that her love for the author was but a temporary affair.

At the lodge, everything is explained to the satisfaction of all but Jessica.

Lisner is summarily dealt with, and Pringle returns to his mine.

Having lost her mother and believing that Tommy needs her, Grizel comes to him but is overcome by grief to see his love for Lady Pippinworth. Remorseful, Tommy returns home, and after his careful nursing Grizel regains her sanity.
