Terry Crews saved the day!
After a woman was told she couldn’t get a picture of Crews on her debit card without the actor’s permission, she asked for the Internet’s help getting his attention — and it worked.
It all started on Monday, when a woman named Darrel Kennedy announced on Twitter that she was ordering a new debit card with an image of Crews from his role as the very frugal father on Everybody Hates Chris — which she later joked would help inspire her to spend less money.

While not as catchy as “the first modern news show,” the above tagline could certainly apply to the premiere episode of “Vice News Tonight.” Moving along at rapid speed with constantly shifting graphics, HBO’s debut half-hour glazed over most of its content in favor of covering a wide swath of topics. The multiple Tony award-winner met, if not exceeded, expectations as #SNLinManuel soared through sketches with fresh energy and a glimmer in the cast’s collective eye. Even Miranda’s bumpers were adorable! Unsurprisingly, this particular episode was super-saturated with music and culture references, but it offered a fair amount of pointed political commentary as well. Let’s dive in.
Cold Open: VP Debate/Latest Trump Controversy
The cold open this week was exceptional. Kicking off with “an encore presentation” of last week’s Vice Presidential debate, the evening opened on new cast member Melissa Villaseñor addressing the audience directly. It’s difficult to think of any other example of “SNL” breaking the fourth wall,...
After a reasonably strong outing last week, “Saturday Night Live” returned this week with first-time host Lin-Manuel Miranda and musical guest twenty one pilots.

The way this presidential campaign has been going, do we even need Saturday Night Live to parody it anymore?
It’s been a crazy week of political bombshells — hey, seen any good Donald Trump videos lately? — and the SNL writers had to be licking their chops at the thought of tearing into all the scandals. Plus, this week’s host was Lin-Manuel Miranda, who gave us all a U.S. history lesson in the Broadway sensation Hamilton, so he’s used to dealing with very extreme political situations. (At least we haven’t seen a pistol duel to the death…...

Steve James’ filmography has long been about finding entry into larger conversations through intimate portraits. The director’s landmark debut, Hoop Dreams, and latter-day efforts like 2014’s monument to critic Roger Ebert, Life Itself, don’t have much in common on the surface, but they both use their central characters to tell larger stories about big picture topics like structural dysfunction and the purpose of film criticism.
That double purpose is the quiet genius of James’ latest documentary, Abacus: Small Enough to Jail. The central story recounts the stranger-than-fiction courtroom saga of Abacus Federal Savings Bank, a family-owned Chinatown bank that is still the only bank indicted in the aftermath of the 2008 American financial crisis. But James’ priorities are less about the courtroom minutiae than the case’s reverberations through the owner Thomas Sung, his family, and their misunderstood immigrant community.
What’s compelling about the case is not whether Abacus is innocent or guilty,...

San Diego Musical Theatre took to social media with its own response and launched a counter-ad campaign ReadyForTomorrow, shifting the Wells Fargo's tagline from, 'Let's get them ready for tomorrow' to 'The arts made me ready for tomorrow.' Following in the footsteps of ATampT and Old Navy, Wells Fargo has become the latest business to draw the ire of arts professionals for running an advertisement that portrays the pursuit of the arts as inferior to sports and the sciences. The ad shows images of two different teens working on experiments as part of Wells Fargo's marketing for their upcoming Teen Day. The first is accompanied by the text, 'A ballerina yesterday. An engineer today,' while the second reads, 'An actor yesterday. A botanist today.' Both images are then followed by the sentence 'Let's get them ready for tomorrow,' printed in italicized letters.

The Democratic National Convention wrapped up on Thursday night in Philadelphia with electrifying speeches from Chelsea Clinton, Rep. Joyce Beatty, and presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. After bringing the crowd to tears with her history-making moment, Hillary joined her family and running mate Tim Kaine for what may have been the most epic balloon party that a political event has ever seen. Seriously, we don't know what kind of budget was set aside for those giant, star-spangled balls, but they were amazing - and everyone in the Wells Fargo Arena was going nuts. Perhaps having the most fun was former President Bill Clinton, who was living his best life while chasing the balloons around on stage, kicking them into the audience, and even snagging one for himself as a souvenir. No matter which side of the aisle you're on politically, you have to admit: there's no better way to celebrate shattering...

Katy Perry had an A-list escort to the DNC stage Thursday night. Orlando Bloom was right by her side in the moments before Katy stepped out to perform her hits, "Rise" and "Roar" ... just ahead of Hillary Clinton's intro in Philly's Wells Fargo Arena. They made up a very small minority at the Democratic National Convention Thursday night, but a small number of people booing and yelling forced Hillary Clinton to raise her voice to be heard as she accepted the party’s presidential nomination. At one point, her supporters loudly “shhh’d” someone to the left of the Wells Fargo Arena in Philadelphia — and to the political left of Clinton — who jeered the former secretary of state during her moment of glory. At times, Clinton’s prepared remarks happened to play off her critics in the room. After the noise off to her left,...

It was morning in America last night among the Democrats pouring out from the Wells Fargo Convention Center in Philadelphia, with almost everyone convinced that they were really nailing it. They had been handed a positive message about the future and about their candidate Hillary Clinton, and a well-orchestrated, devastating critique by some of the most credible figures in the country on her opponent. It rather seemed by the end of the evening that all the credible figures in the country were joining in. The nations good and great, Democrat and Republican, were forging a consensus in seeing Donald

The Ufc was recently purchased in a deal that valued the promotion at $4 billion dollars. That’s good news for the publicly traded WWE, one analyst says, but the sports entertainment brand can’t touch Dana White’s real fight game financially. Wells Fargo believes WWE could now have an equity valuation of $36-$44 per share — essentially 80-120 percent above Monday’s actual stock price. Analysts there previously saw a bull scenario that would have valued the Vince McMahon-owned promotion at $37-$52 per share, if everything worked out in its favor. In reality, WWE stock closed Monday at $20.46 per share,...

It seems Donald Trump can't count on the support of even long-deceased Republicans. The billionaire businessman recently announced plans to fundraise at the former home of Barry Goldwater, the conservative icon who shook up the Gop when he ran for president in 1964. Trump's contentious presidential campaign has drawn comparisons to that of the late Arizona senator. But Goldwater's widow, Susan Goldwater Levine, told The Washington Post on Thursday that the comparisons - and Trump's fundraiser - are anything but welcome. "Ugh or yuck is my response," Levine said. "I think Barry would be appalled that his home was being used for that purpose.

A swelling number of advertisers — many of whom paid big bucks to sponsor 2012’s Gop national convention — are opting out of this year’s bash. Among those signaling they won’t be taking part this year are Wells Fargo, Ups, Motorola, JPMorgan Chase, Ford and Walgreens, according to a report by Bloomberg.
