Sex & Nudity

Violence & Gore

  • The Lion threatens to fight Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tinman, and Toto when they first meet him
  • Dorothy slaps the Lion in the face in order to protect Toto which causes him to cry.
  • The Witch commonly uses fire to threaten other characters, and throws an explosive hourglass at the four main characters in one scene.

Profanity

  • When Auntie Em was yelling at Miss Gulch after she takes Toto away. She tells her "for 23 years I've been dying to tell you what I thought of you. And now. Well being a Christian woman I can't say it!" It may be implying that Auntie Em was about to tell her bad words.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • None, unless you consider the poppies that make the main characters to become drowsy.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The Wicked Witch may be frightening to younger audiences, as she has green skin (and other features to make her seem creepy and unpleasant) and wears black to make her look scary, and is commonly shown threatening characters in many scenes.
  • There are several scenes in which Dorothy is upset and crying (usually afraid for another character or her own life).
  • The Flying Monkeys have a somewhat creepy appearance (blue fur, sharp teeth, wide mouths, ect.).
  • This film may have been considered very dark for a kids' film at the time (as it deals with topics such as disease, death, enchantments and natural disasters), although it is pretty tame by today's standards.
  • Some "alive" apple trees throw apples at Dorothy and the Scarecrow.
  • The tornado approaches the farm just as Dorothy arrives (including views of her inside the farmhouse as things are blown about, and later images of the house up inside the tornado, etc...).
  • The Wicked Witch throws a fireball at the Scarecrow.
  • Dorothy and the trio go through a dark "haunted forest" and then encounter some flying monkeys that chase and attack the foursome.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • A house lands on a witch, which crushes her to death. This scene is mostly off-screen and barely graphic (as all you see is just her legs sticking out from under the house after it has fallen).
  • At the end, Dorothy kills the Wicked Witch (unintentionally) by throwing water on her which causes her body to dissolve to death. The scene is barely graphic, and mostly off-screen (as you mostly just see her sink into her clothes).

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The wizard's initial appearance and voice (enhanced by effects) are intimidating and he acts unfriendly to the main characters until later.
  • The Wicked Witch sets the Scarecrow's arm on fire.
