- Maj. Rufus Cobb: Now read it back to me, Roy.
- Roy: "If we are ever going to have law and order in this part of the country, we got to take vipers like those Fords and that slimy railroad detective Runyon and shoot 'em down like dogs."
- Preacher: Prepare for the vengeance of the Lord! The day of reckoning is mighty close and you'll catch a heapin' fire if you don't get to repentin' and get to it quick! Hellfire is awaitin' ya. Are you ready to meet your Maker?
- Frank James: I reckon so.
- Preacher: You willing to stand before the judgmency with a chaw of tobacco in your mouth? Lost souls, that's what you are! Black as sin! Black with iniquity! The light of the Lord ain't in any of ya! Do you ever think of salvation? Do you ever think of the kingdom? No! All you ever think of is your bellies... and your corn pone and you chitlins and your corn liquor. Ah, brother, how about a swig of that jug?
- Bob Ford: Have a drink, Major.
- Maj. Rufus Cobb: I don't drink with rats.
- Liberty bartender: Watch out, Major!
- Maj. Rufus Cobb: No danger. The Fords only shoot at backs.
- Frank James: [Holding a gun] Now lay there still. Don't let me hear a peep from ya!
- Dan Wilson: You won't hear nothing from me, brother. I wanna be around for breakfast!
- Prosecutor: [Approaches witness stand] Your name is Breckenridge Jackson?
- Colonel Jackson: [Curtly] *Colonel* Breckenridge Jackson, sir!
- Prosecutor: Well, *Colonel* Jackson, sir. You say you've known Frank James for many years?
- Colonel Jackson: [Angrily] Are you doubtin' my word, sir?
- Prosecutor: [Briskly] I merely asked you a question, sir.
- Colonel Jackson: I answered for my friend, the major, and you sir, were in the room at the same time. Are you deef?
- Prosecutor: [Answers with indignation] My hearing is perfectly good!
- Colonel Jackson: Very well! Then I advise you sir, to pay attention to what's going on in this h'yere courtroom.
- [Riotous laughter from spectators]
- Judge: [Bangs gavel for order] Please answer all questions put you, directly, and without discussion. As a character witness...
- Colonel Jackson: [Stands, bows] I shall do as you wish, sir. There's no favor I can refuse the man
- [raises arms flamboyantly]
- Colonel Jackson: who led the *courageous* attack at Balls Bluff...
- Judge: All right, all right. But let's get on with it.
- Colonel Jackson: Very well, sir.
- [Sits, speaks curtly]
- Colonel Jackson: What do you want to know, Yankee?
- Prosecutor: You say you didn't kill the watchman Wilson?
- Frank James: Had no reason to.
- Prosecutor: You always need a reason for killing?
- Frank James: [annoyed] Don't you?
- Prosecutor: [curtly] I am not on trial! Your accomplice could've shot Wilson.
- Frank James: Yeeeeah... could have...
- Prosecutor: Ahhh...!
- Frank James: ...but he didn't. Shot from the outside got Wilson.
- Prosecutor: I suggest that you *caused* the death of the watchman... either directly, or by using him as a shield in making your escape!
- Frank James: Can't arrest ya for suggestin' but 'tain't so.
- Prosecutor: Tell me... just where *was* the watchman Wilson when he was hit?
- Frank James: Well, lemme see, I think he...
- Prosecutor: [interrupts loudly] Never mind what you think, where was he?
- Frank James: [brief chuckle] Sorry, I can't talk without thinkin', not bein' a lawyer.
- [uproarious laughter from spectators, including the judge]
- Bob Ford: [the Major confronts the Fords at the saloon after their pardon] Have a drink, Major.
- Maj. Rufus Cobb: I don't drink with rats!
- Liberty bartender: Watch it, Major!
- Maj. Rufus Cobb: No danger, the Fords only shoot at backs!
- Charlie Ford: You tryin' to make trouble?
- Maj. Rufus Cobb: No, but if I had my way...
- Bob Ford: You had your way! You and your stinkin' paper did everything you could to hang us, didn't ya? Well we're free now, and we got the reward money, and there isn't a thing you can do about it!
- George Runyan: Come come, gentlemen, let bygones be bygones. The James case is a closed issue.
- Maj. Rufus Cobb: [angrily] Not by a gosh-danged sight it ain't! And it won't be closed until Jessie's blood is paid for, every dad-blasted drop of it! And your hands ain't any too clean either, Runyan!
- George Runyan: Mine? What have I done? As an officer of the railroad, naturally I...
- Bob Ford: Oh, don't pay any attention to the old buzzard! Talk, talk, that's all he can do!
- Maj. Rufus Cobb: Yes, 'bout all I can do! But those James boys are mighty peculiar, *mighty* peculiar! Jessie's gone, that's true, maybe Frank's gone, but then again, maybe he ain't. The boys always had a mighty peculiar way of turnin' up when you least expected them. *Mighty* peculiar!
