Storyline

The murder of gangster Nick Prenta touches off an investigation of mysterious socialite Lorna Hansen Forbes, who seems to have no past, and has now disappeared. In flashback, we see the woman's anonymous roots; her poor working-class marriage, which ends in tragedy and her determination to find "better things." Soon finding that sex appeal is her only salable commodity, she climbs from man to man toward the center of a nationwide crime syndicate...a very perilous position. Trivia

When Ethel Whitehead first sees Martin Blankford working in the office of her firm, there is a photo of a building behind his desk. That building is the original Phelan Building, which stood at the corner of Market Street and O'Farrell Streets in San Francisco. The photo was taken about 1890. It was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and subsequent fire. A larger and more impressive Phelan Building was constructed on the same site. It is now an historic landmark. See more »

Quotes

Nick Prenta: [intercepting and examining the check she's offered for her gambling losses] Your check's no good, Mrs. Forbes.
Ethel Whitehead: [coldly] My check's good anywhere.
Nick Prenta: [tearing up the check] Except here.
Ethel Whitehead: [looks annoyed]
Nick Prenta: That's right. I'm fresh. But I'm also generous. Tonight, you're the guest of the house. Now tomorrow night, that's different. Tomorrow night you can lose your shirt.
[looks her over and bends closer]
Nick Prenta: I'll even pay to see that.

Joan Crawford gives an outstanding performance!
5 February 1999 | by gitrichSee all my reviews

Joan Crawford portrays a young woman on the edge of poverty who decides to change her life for the better. Unfortunately, she thinks that money is the answer to every problem. A smart drama, though formula most of the time. An excellent cast includes David Brian, Steve Cochran and Kent Smith. This is a film worth seeing.
