Sex & Nudity

  • Julie Adams appears in a famously revealing and sensual bathing suit.
  • It is implied that the Creature has a physical attraction to Kate.
  • Kate is at the center of a love triangle, with two male characters vying for her affection, for much of the film.
  • Men appear bare chested though out the film.
  • There are scenes of men wearing skimpy swimming trunks

Violence & Gore

  • A fistfight breaks out between two of the characters.
  • The creature kills about five people during the film. The deaths are shown offscreen.
  • Some very minor blood from the creature attacks. The creature has harpoons stuck in his torso and is also set on fire.

Profanity

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Cigarettes and pipes.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Various scenes of the creature reaching for someone (usually the girl) or suddenly appearing.
  • The Creature attack sequences can be intense, with startling music and loud, frightening sound effects.
  • A famous scene where Kate swims on the surface of the lagoon, while the Creature swims below her. The scene takes place in daylight, and is balletic in its staging, but can still be very suspenseful, with the Creature swimming directly beneath the unaware girl, occasionally reaching for her leg with its claws.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • The creature attacks and kills two men in a tent. We see one man's face gripped in the creature's clawed hand. More thrashing and implied violence from outside of the tent. We later hear that the bodies have been mutilated by what appear to be "jaguar claws".
  • The Creature attacks one of the crew, grabbing his head in its clawed hands. His brother is then killed in a similar fashion, later in the film.
  • Mark is killed by the creature. They struggle underwater, and then we see Mark's lifeless body float to the surface.
  • Lucas kills the Creature at the end of the film by firing into it several times with a rifle. We see the bloody bullet wounds and watch as the creature staggers into the water, where it dies.
  • Dr. Thompson is attacked and mauled by the creature. He survives, with some blood, and is later seen with his face bandaged below deck.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The death of the Creature may be upsetting to some audiences. The film does an effective job of making the Creature both threatening and sympathetic. Some children (and many adults) may find themselves siding more with the monster than the protagonists, which can make the deliberately tragic death of the Creature saddening.
