Ruth Seymour, the longtime leader of Santa Monica-based public radio station Kcrw died Friday, station president Jennifer Ferro confirmed to Deadline. She was 88.
Seymour was at the from station 1977 to 2010. In that time she transformed it from a quality radio outlet run out of a junior high school classroom to one of the most influential NPR stations in the country produced in a state of the art studio at Santa Monica College.
Seymour initially came on as a consultant and became General Manager in 1978. Her ascension to a management role roughly coincided with the station moving to a powerful new transmitter, which greatly expanded its reach.
At about the same time, National Public Radio launched Morning Edition. Seymour decided to make a morning block of the 2-hour show, running it three times 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. The move helped Kcrw become a mainstay in many Angelenos’ lives.

The Talos Principle 2 has three main endings, each with consequences that can be interpreted as positive or negative depending on player philosophy and character choices. All three endings are decided by a single choice, made at the very end of the game. However, there are many small variations on which epilogue scenes play out, depending on a wider variety of options chosen throughout the game.
There are three main endings possible in The Talos Principle 2, excluding one joke ending and a wide variety of unlockable epilogues. Although some of these epilogues are determined by the player's choices throughout the game, which ending they see is almost entirely affected by one pivotal decision in the game's final moments. None of them could be called a traditional good, bad, or true ending; each has consequences that might be interpreted as either positive or negative, depending both on player philosophy and character choices.

[This story contains spoilers from the season two finale of The Afterparty, “Vivian and Zoë.”]
In the season two finale of The Afterparty, viewers learn two things about the killer and one about the deceased, Edgar, the groom. Let’s start with the latter.
Edgar (Zach Woods) went around the world to find the globetrotting uncle, Ulysses (John Cho), of his bride-to-be Grace (Poppy Liu). But Ulysses wants no part of the wedding. Why? Because at the wedding will be his forbidden love that he’s traveled around the world to forget about, Vivian (Vivian Wu), the wife of his half-brother Feng (Ken Jeong). Edgar, however, forces Ulysses’ hand and makes him attend.
Edgar learned the hard way, however, that it’s best to leave people alone and that no means no — as audience members of the Apple TV+ series found out in the end that Ulysses is Edgar’s murderer (although, not intentionally). What Ulysses didn’t count on when attending the wedding was that,...

Peter Atencio’s Hollywood chops have mainly been planted in the garden of comedy for his more than 20-year career — Key & Peele, the Jean-Claude Van Johnson series and this year’s satirical mobster film The Machine, to name a few.
But when old friends Phil Lord and Christopher Miller invited the 40-year-old helmer to direct what he was told would be one of the most complex and challenging episodes of the second season of The Afterparty — Apple TV+’s whodunnit murder mystery series — he tells The Hollywood Reporter that a more dramatic approach was needed to get to the core of the funny.
How serious can directing comedy get? Atencio breaks it down for The Hollywood Reporter in a recent Zoom interview.

Gilmore Girls focused on the hectic relationship between mother and daughter, Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, but it also showed Rory's relationship with literature and every book she reads. According to Book Riot, the characters read and refer to just shy of 410 books once the Netflix revival, A Year in the Life, came out in 2016. But there’s a big difference between books and authors that were referenced, and the books Rory was seen reading.
At the beginning of Gilmore Girls, Rory was just 16 years old and would rather spend her time reading. She said it best at her high school graduation in season 3, episode 22, “Those Are Strings, Pinocchio”: “I live in two worlds; one is a world of books.” Reading not only gave Rory a sense of peace but also took her out of dramatic realities. Unironically, some books Rory read paralleled her own life as a young woman...

Cool Stuff: Lee Unkrich's Definitive Compendium For The Shining Is Up For Pre-Order, But It's Pricey
What is it about "The Shining" that induces such obsession? In the 43 years since its release, Stanley Kubrick's film adaptation of the book by Stephen King has inspired conspiratorial documentaries, tribute songs, countless fan theories, countless books, sequels both failed and succesful, and more. You're looking at someone who's always stuck by King's side in thinking the movie is an inferior rendering of the deep, psychological morass contained inside his chilling novel. But even I can't deny that there's something irresistible about Kubrick's film, something that beckons in the brief flashes of bizarre art hanging on the walls, the labyrinthine pattern of the hotel carpet, and the actual labyrinth outside the Overlook -- the beguiling hedge maze.
It seems "The Shining" will never be fully plumbed of its mysteries, but lifelong Kubrick obsessive and noted animated film director Lee Unkrich has given it the best try in years. Luxury...

Syndicado Film Sales has boarded Rati Oneli’s “Ulysses,” a working title, as world sales agent and executive producer, and will be looking for financing for the Georgian production at Cannes.
Oneli directed “City of the Sun,” which had its world premiere at the Berlinale in 2017 and won awards at several other festivals, and produced, co-wrote and played a lead role in Dea Kulumbegashvili’s “Beginning,” which was selected in the Official Selection at Cannes, was Georgia’s Official Entry in the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar category, and won best film, director and screenplay at San Sebastian Film Festival in 2020.

Before Ted Lasso Season 2 aired, I had a wish list.
One of those wishes was for the show to get more experimental -- do an installment completely unlike any before.
Ted Lasso Season 2 Episode 9 granted this wish in the best way possible!
This episode is all about Beard. However, it's not the usual Ted Lasso, only following Beard instead of Ted. It goes the extra mile and creates a story that could belong to an entirely different show.
One of the great things here is how strong the point of view is.
Jeremy: Have you ever been to Vegas?
Baz: What's Ted like behind closed doors?
Paul: How do you cope knowing the universe is infinite but your consciousness ends at the same time?
Beard: I've been to Vegas many times. One night is good. Two nights is perfect. Three nights is too many. Ted is a man, just a man.

The magic Kate Dicamillo imbues within the pages of Flora & Ulysses is infectious. Not only is her book a smart and witty adventure that refuses to shy from the struggles with loneliness everyone faces (young and old), but it also seeks to use wordplay and vocabulary in a fun Phantom Tollbooth kind of way that entertains and educates in equal measure. My worry with Disney’s live-action adaptation was therefore whether or not it could do the material justice since the absurdly hyperbolic nature of the whole always felt better-suited for the imaginative flights of fancy animation provides. Things like Dicamillo switching perspective every couple chapters to her superhero squirrel wouldn’t be easy, but I still looked forward to seeing how director Lena Khan might achieve it anyway.
It sadly doesn’t take long to realize she’ll never actually get that chance, though. Not with the script Brad Copeland has written.

If you like your face rubbed in the seedy underbelly of after-hours psychosexual obsession in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, then “Pvt Chat” is the movie for you. Writer/director Ben Hozie’s great-looking indie knows how to conjure a gritty New York atmosphere of cigarette smoke and ennui in the city, but despite highly naked (in every sense of the word) performances from Julia Fox and Peter Vack, it .
And that’s not passing judgment on anyone’s sexual proclivities, as this movie assures. Jack’s (Peter Vack) taste is for women comfortably at a distance through a screen, as he spends his nights sending tokens to virtual cam girls who degrade him while he masturbates drearily. His professional life during waking hours is nonexistent: Despite seemingly plenty of disposable income, he can’t make rent on time, and his roommate recently died by suicide, leaving Jack with the bill.

Disney+ released the trailer for their upcoming comedy-adventure Flora & Ulysses. The movie is all set to premiere exclusively on the streaming service Friday, February 19th, 2021. The footage teases a new kind of adventure with a furry little superhero who has definitely mastered the superhero landing pose. Ulysses has more than likely seen his fair share of Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, thanks to Disney, because he appears to be doing a pretty good Iron Man impression when he lands.
Flora & Ulysses is based on the Newbery Award-winning book about 10-year old Flora, an avid comic book fan and a self-avowed cynic, whose parents have recently separated. She is seen flipping through the pages of Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel comic books in the trailer. After rescuing a squirrel, she names Ulysses, Flora is amazed to discover he possesses unique superhero powers, which take them on an adventure of humorous...

One of the more interesting periods in the history of Italian cinema is the era of international co-productions that followed neorealism; kicked off by the massive success of MGM’s 1951 extravaganza Quo Vadis, the Italian film industry entered a boom age in which the location shooting, social consciousness, and limited resources of neorealism gave way to spectacular sets, glamorous Hollywood stars, and lavish budgets thanks to the country’s abundance of breathtaking scenery and attractive production incentives. One of the most expensive and entertaining of the 1950s historical epics was Ulysses (1954), a gorgeously photographed and cleverly written adaptation of Homer’s […]

No, it’s not the story of the 18th President of the United States. Kirk Douglas must have been a big hit in Rome, starring in one of the first and best of the Italo epic ‘classics,’ before the musclemen cornered the market. Homer’s tale of the husband who took ten years to come back from Troy is given real star power, a splendid production and best of all, an intelligent script. This disc looks a lot better than the ragged earlier DVD, plus it offers a superior Italian language soundtrack. And don’t forget Gary Teetzel’s recommendation: as an adaptation of The Odyssey, it’s right up there with O Brother Where Art Thou!

The Criterion Channel’s September 2020 Lineup Includes Sátántangó, Agnès Varda, Albert Brooks & More
As the coronavirus pandemic still rages on, precious few remain skeptical about going to the movies. But while your AMCs and others claim some godlike safety from Covid, there remains a chunk of people still uncomfortable hitting up theaters. To them, we bring you the September 2020 Criterion Channel lineup.
It starts off with quite the swath of content too. Béla Tarr’s Sátántangó hits the service on September 1, and its seven-plus hours should take up a large chunk of your day. Coming soon after is a collection of more than a dozen Joan Blondell starrers from the pre-Code era, including Howard Hawks’ The Crowd Roars, three collaborations with Mervyn LeRoy, and Ray Enright & Busby Berkeley’s Dames.
For some stuff released almost a century later, the service also sees the addition of documentary bender Robert Greene. His Actress, Kate Plays Christine, and Bisbee ’17 join soon after. Janicza Bravo, director of Lemon,...

When he shuffled off this mortal coil in 1995, Arthur Lubin’s New York Times obituary was titled “Arthur Lubin, 96, Director Of ‘Mr. Ed’ TV Series, Dies.” It’s doubtful the prolific Lubin would have complained about that particular credit headlining his accomplishments; the man who directed Karloff and Lugosi, jumpstarted Abbott and Costello’s film career and gave Clint Eastwood his first break, also had a thing for talking animals. In 1950 he bought the rights to a book about a talking mule and began a series of hit comedies starring a four-legged chatterbox named Francis and his two-legged pal played by Donald O’Connor.

This Outlander review contains spoilers.
Outlander Season 5, Episode 11
The penultimate episode of Outlander Season 5 begins to answer the questions raised earlier in the season: Will the Regulators and Browns come back? Will a new villain replace Bonnet? Although, on the one hand, novel writer Diana Gabaldon uses the script to flesh out character development and fan-favorite moments from the novel, the plotting designed to bring the main story arcs of a season to a close feels somewhat rushed.
“Journeycake” sets the tone for an episode of conflicting emotions right from the beginning, with scenes that swings from tense drama to warm and fuzzy family nostalgia. Right before the cold open, viewers see in the credits Claire in her Batsuit eating peanut butter and jelly sandwich The cold open shows Jamie, Claire, and Roger find an entire family of Dutch settlers burned to death. A fragment of a native arrow is...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “My Brilliant Friend” Season 2, Episode 7, “Ghosts.”]
“Ghosts” ends with a haunted Lenu (Margherita Mazzucco) recalling how her whole life is a series of “almosts” as she tosses a box containing Lila’s (Gaia Girace) innermost personal effects and writings over a bridge. The “ghosts” of this episode stalk every frame, and they’re the ghosts of dreams killed, hopes collapsed, and old friends and lovers who’ve drifted apart. As Lenu betrays her promise to Lila never to read the letters entrusted to her, director and series creator Saverio Costanzo makes an experimental choice, which is to shoot Lila’s epistolary reverie in 16mm. The rest of the series has, up to this point, been shot digitally, despite lacking the varnish of other contemporary series in favor of a loose, gritty, ’60s arthouse style.
The camerawork helps create a claustrophobic, gossamer atmosphere for the most intimate hour of “My Brilliant Friend” so far.

Ulysses S. Grant’s place in American history is secured – but also a bit misunderstood. Be it his reported alcoholism, his exploits on the battlefield during the Civil War, or his less-than-stellar presidency, Grant’s life is often overlooked by many. Ron Chernow’s phonebook-thick biography sought to change that, and now here comes the History Channel’s three-night […]

This Outlander article contains spoilers through Season 5, Episode 8.
Outlander fans know Jocasta as Jamie Fraser’s incredibly rich aunt who built an entire estate off of stolen Jacobite gold. Underneath the estate’s pretty exteriors, however, is a truth the series so far has done the utmost to avoid having any serious discussion about: African slaves built the house, planted the crops, and served all of the guests at Jocasta’s Season 5 wedding to Duncan Innes.
This isn’t the first time Outlander has side-stepped the issue of slavery, nor will it probably be the last. Since the show made its way to the Americas in Season 3, the writers’ consistent failure to address slavery has been a disservice to fans of all ethnicities. It also creates a disconnect between the show and its source material. There are easy solutions to this problem, but it would take the current writing staff...

Actor Christopher Naoki Lee, whose credits include AMC’s The Terror and Fox’s Deputy, is set to make his feature directorial debut with the socially-minded pic Dinner Party which he co-wrote with Greek alum Daniel Weaver.

This favorite animal film takes a half-step sideways out of the cute animal subgenre: the delightful Mij is no super-otter, just an ordinary playful garden-variety otter, as an Otter oughta be. (cough) Champion mellow English couple Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers have put together a film guaranteed to lower your blood pressure. But see it first before deciding it’s for your kids, as reality is not sugarcoated in its uplifting, but certainly not sentimentalized, view of our place in a world that still has some animals left alive.
