Sex & Nudity

  • A woman attempts to seduce the king as a diversion using mildly suggestive language, but nothing occurs.
  • Almost all the males in the film wear tights (obviously, because it is based the medieval times), although most of the tunics usually cover "down there", there are a few characters that do not wear such tunics, and their tights are rather thin and revealing.
  • The Court Jester, Hawkins, (Danny Kaye), wears a tunic towards the end of the film that has a split down the middle of his shirt with nothing but his bare skin underneath. It opens revealing more in one short scene.
  • A man and woman passionately kiss while having a roll in the hay. This is the closest thing to sex that is shown in the movie.
  • Some of the women wear low-cut dresses.
  • Some passionate kissing.
  • An infant's buttocks are partially exposed several times to reveal a prominent birthmark.

Violence & Gore

  • A woman threatens another woman with a knife, tries to get her to drink poison, and threatens her a couple of times with "if he dies, you die".
  • Numerous men are ejected/launched from atop a castle wall over a cliff into the water below, with their survival left unstated. This is played for comic effect, partially due to the setup in which they are passed to the wall by midgets in an assembly-line type process.
  • A man is bloodlessly shot with an arrow.
  • A jousting match. No blood.
  • A few sword fights. No blood.
  • Three men are poisoned.
  • Many people are knocked out with clubs.
  • All violence is more comical than violent.

Profanity

  • The old english word "wench" is used throughout the film, (an old word, equivalent to "young woman or girl" commonly associated with servant or low status female)

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A woman drops tablets of poison into three people's wine.
  • Several poisonings.
  • No drugs. Some drinking.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A character is captured. Later one of the villains approaches another and says "*name* is dead" to which the other replies "did he talk?". We are to believe he was tortured to death. This frightened me as a child, but only because it prompted my imagination.
  • A character describes medieval torture saying "they will put you on the rack, scold you with hot iron, and remove the nails from your fingers with flaming hot pincers". Later the character gulps at seeing metalworkers with red hot tools, and a person is seen go by on a horse drawn cart chained with his head on a chopping block and an executioner standing behind him, presumably being lead to his death.
  • The setup for the plot is explained in opening narration which refers to a massacre of the entire English royal family. The plot largely revolves around an attempt to protect a baby who is the only survivor of the massacre, and as true heir to the throne, is in constant danger of being murdered by the new king's henchmen.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A man is thrown from his horse and lyes unable to get up. Another character approaches and points his sword at the downed knights chest. The knight says something along the lines of "spill my dishonoured guts". The one with the swords eventually refuses to kill him, instead telling him "take your men and go", but I remember the scene feeling intense as a child.
