Twilight for the Gods (1958)
Rock Hudson: Captain David Bell
Quotes
-
First Mate Ramsay : Sixteen inches. You better do some pumping.
Captain David Bell : Later. When the cabin passengers are asleep.
-
Charlotte King : What kind of a dog is that, Captain?
Captain David Bell : Hmm?
Charlotte King : What kind of a dog?
Captain David Bell : A male.
-
First Mate Ramsay : I suppose it'd be heresy to point out that this ship has seen better days.
Captain David Bell : Haven't we all.
-
Charlotte King : Relax.
Captain David Bell : I'm not sure I trust lady barbers.
-
Ethel Peacock : Did you hear the pumping last night?
Captain David Bell : Yes.
-
Captain David Bell : Look, I came up here because I wanted to be alone. Now, why don't you run along and sail your boat like a good little boy.
-
Reverend Butterfield : Now, what time does the bar open?
Captain David Bell : It doesn't. There isn't any.
Reverend Butterfield : I am dead and on route to purgatory.
-
Charlotte King : From her she looks almost beautiful.
Captain David Bell : Distance helps. She looked that way when I first saw her, fell in love with her. Ships are like people. They're just as beautiful as you see them. A cannibal thinks that a woman with a ring in her nose is beautiful. It all depends on whose doing the looking.
Charlotte King : So that's why you named her 'Cannibal'.
Captain David Bell : There was a time when I would have sold my soul to own that little ship. Maybe I did. Because now she's my world. Unless I force myself, I don't see her faults or what time has done to her. To me she'll always be beautiful. Maybe because I need her.
Charlotte King : Wouldn't it be possible that the same thing might be true between - say, a man and a woman? Or, would that depend on who was doing the looking?
-
Captain David Bell : What's the matter?
Charlotte King : Well, frankly, I'd certainly like a bath.
Captain David Bell : That can be arranged.
-
Captain David Bell : We're about a thousand miles from the nearest land. But, instead of letting it bother you, why not enjoy it. When you get ashore, you'll only have money troubles, fights with your relatives, get sick, wish you were right back here. For peace of mind, there's no place like being at sea. You're just about as close as you can get to God out here.
-
Charlotte King : I refuse to ask what I'm doing with this.
Captain David Bell : That's one of the things I like about you.
-
Captain David Bell : I guess I have a lot to learn about human nature - some people, in particular.
