Trivia

The main character is based on Arch Hall Sr., director and star of films such as Eegah (1962) and Wild Guitar (1962), and was an Army buddy of the film's writer. Hall was indeed a pilot, as is his son, Arch Hall Jr. Hall was aware his friend Bowers was writing the script and was flattered and pleased. Once the film was completed and in release, Hall sued the producers of this movie for invasion of privacy. The suit was apparently dropped or settled out of court. Bowers, writing later about his friend and the incident, not only bore Hall no malice, he thought Hall's actions were consistently in character for the sharpie with whom he'd served in uniform. Pvt. Russell Drexler [Joe Flynn] comments on the hazards of piloting gliders in combat: "The whole idea seems to be to try and crash through as many fences as you can before you burst into flames." Gliders are unpowered aircraft and carry no fuel that would burst into flames. See more »

Quotes

Archie Hall: Were you as shocked as I was about the fuss all those guys put up about us getting passes?
William 'Bill' Bowers: It wasn't that so much as it was that we were the only two in our barracks not on that KP list. Several of them were muttering something about "those two no-good duty sergeant-bribing gold-bricks who better not show their faces around there again."
Archie Hall: Well, what makes them think it's such a treat for US to show THEM our faces?

Comic look at Army life stateside in WW2
13 January 2003 | by smokehill retrieversSee all my reviews

Light, entertaining piece that oddly seems to fit both Webb and Mitchum. The scriptwriter had an excellent feel for how things worked (and still work, probably) in the Army if you know how to play the angles. Most of us who spent a few years on active duty (I spent 21 yrs) pulled a lot of these stunts, and we all knew people like Archie Hall -- and most of the other denizens of Camp Buckley.

This ain't CITIZEN KANE, but it's a lot of fun, probably a lot more so if you spent time in uniform.
