Sex & Nudity

  • We see the buttocks of a boy. This is in two scenes, the second of which is somewhat extended and shows rear nudity for multiple boys.
  • We also see a very, very, brief glimpse of a young boy's genitalia from behind. It's so brief that it's much easier to miss completely than to catch.

Violence & Gore

  • A small bird is killed with a bb gun for food.
  • We see several boys being pushed and slapped by a soccer coach. And caned on the hand by the principal.
  • Billy gets into violent arguments with his brother and mother, in which they push and shove.
  • Billy gets into a fight at school, and they fall on the ground punching and kicking each other.

Profanity

  • One mouthed F-word; a man can be seen mouthing "you fucking twat!" to a boy (it's barely audible, but it comes up in the subtitles). In the undubbed version, there is another instance where Billy shouts "thou's a big, fucking bastard!" at Jud towards the end of the film, which leads his mother to say, "That's enough of that language." In the dubbed version, this is replaced by "thou's a big, bloody bastard!"
  • A man is seen making an obscene hand gesture (shaking his hand, miming masturbation). In England and Commonwealth countries, this is often a sign of calling someone a "wanker" or "tosser."
  • "Twat" is used a few times.
  • A few uses of 'Hell' and 'Damn'
  • "Bloody" is said several times.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A young man drinks heavily and passes out.
  • Boys at school are punished for smoking.
  • An older teenager smokes.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Billy's older brother is a bully and makes for several stressful scenes.
  • The phys-ed coach is an unrepentant bully. He claps kids in the ear and makes them take cold showers.
  • The main character faces a lot of belittling by the adults in his life and at times the movie is quite bleak.
  • An animal dies which may be distressing for younger viewers.
