The mask. The music. The sequels. There are many memorable things about the Halloween franchise, but none of them have had quite the same impact as a then-20-year-old Jamie Lee Curtis, daughter of Hollywood royalty, who created an everygirl so iconic, she’s returning to the role nearly 40 years after the original.
In 1978, Curtis made her film debut as resilient teenage babysitter Laurie Strode in Halloween. It’s a simple enough story: A young man, Michael Myers, kills his sister on Halloween in 1963 and is locked away in an institution. Fifteen years later, he escapes and returns to his hometown, where he terrorizes and kills a group of teenagers one by one, until he’s stopped (or at least slowed down) by Laurie.
What makes Laurie iconic is the sense of realness Curtis imbues her with. It’s not just that she’s the typical example of the “final girl” horror movie trope, or even that she...

Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amelie, Delicatessen) has adapted Reif Larson’s debut novel The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet for his latest feature. The story centers on a 12-year-old cartography enthusiast in an eccentric family, who travels across country hidden on board a freight train after being invited to the Smithsonian Institute. The $34 million France-Canadian co-production shot for 72 days, was all filmed in 3D, using the same team who shot Martin Scorsese’s Hugo. Jeunet– whose lengthy filmography includes Delicatessen, Alien Resurrection, and City of Lost Children – delivers his usual trademark style, and so we know from at least a visual standpoint, the film will not disappoint. The cast also includes Helena Bonham Carer as T.S.’s mom, Callum Keith Rennie as his dad, Judy Davis as the head of the Smithsonian, along with Rick Mercer, Niamh Wilson, Robert Maillet and Jakob Davies. Hit the jump to check out the trailer.

You remember the VHS cover: a zombie, clawing its way out of a TV set. And that title? Totally 80’s, totally in blue neon with drippy, gruesome, haunted house lettering: The Video Dead, my friends. Heck it used to be on USA every Saturday growing up, hawked by Rhonda Shear or Commander USA. Well, as you know, it’s not on DVD ... yet.
Cut to: Mr. Chris MacGibbon — ghoul about town, trying to do the right thing, giving us another shot of 80’s zombies, finally. I had the pleasure of throwing a few questions Chris’ way and if we all play our cards right, we’ll be slipping The Video Dead right next to our copies of Humaniods From the Deep. Why? Because we can, and we’ll have Chris to thank for it.
Heather Buckley: When was the first time you watched The Video Dead?
Chris MacGibbon: I first...

True to its name, the Scream Awards is an award show where the winners are decided by the biggest scream, like talent shows of olden days, before text messaging and toll-free numbers were invented. In this case, Scream winners are decided by internet votes. It's not surprising to then see current trend-grabbing vampires dominate the show; but the awards, it seemed, are secondary. The highlights of the night are all the honorary awards, celebrating the legends of their own mediums.
It was a little disconcerting to notice that the award winners were all telegraphed by the adoring cheers of the audience, too. The more enthusiastic the cheers, the likelier for that person to win. Vampires are definitely in this year, with notable appearances/wins for Twilight, True Blood, The Vampire's Assistant and Let the Right One In.

A few things before we get to the review. First, I enjoyed the first film. It was a dark and brutal take on the lore of Michael Myers. I enjoyed Rob Zombie's version of the material and was extremely excited for Halloween II. You can see my review of the first film, which Rob Zombie featured on his blog, here.
Second, Regular readers know that I abhor spoilers. I do my best to keep plot details and revelations to a bare minimum on this site. That said, this review Will contain spoilers.
Read at your own risk.
Thirdly, I mentioned that Rob Zombie featured my review of Halloween on his blog. You can be sure that courtesy will not be repeated because this review is not going to be good.
In fact, if you are worried about spoilers I'll tell you this much so you can avoid them if you,...
