- After spending the last two years in Europe as an exchange student, Gidget returns home to California only to discover that things have changed. The letters she had been writing to her beloved "Moondoggie" to try to make him jealous have had the wrong effect. Disillusioned with love, and after hearing a speech on television, she decides to make a real difference in the world by going to New York to become a youth worker at the United Nations. While there she has a proposal of marriage from an extremely wealthy Arabian Sheik, but instead she falls for a handsome but older Australian diplomat.—Kevin Steinhauer <K.Steinhauer@BoM.GOV.AU>
- Perpetual California surfer gal Frances 'Gidget' Lawrence is in a transition in her life. After dropping out of college after two years in Europe, she returns to California to find that she no longer fits. Most specifically, her boyfriend Jeff Griffith - Moondoggie to the surfer crowd - has moved on from her, as he believed she writing about her European adventures, especially with other boys, meant that she had moved on from him. In addition, the Air Force is stationing him in Greenland. She feels she needs to make a significant contribution to society to fill the void left by Moondoggie's absence, she acting upon a television advertisement - a direct plea by Ambassador Post - to work at the United Nations in New York. Once in New York, she plans on a direct "frontal attack" on Ambassador Post for a job. Although she does make an impression on Ambassador Post which results in her getting into the four week training program to become a UN guide under the tutelage of hard-nosed Bibi Crosby, she makes an even bigger one on Alex MacLaughlin, part of the Australian delegation representing their farming interests, and Arab Sheik Abdul Ahmed III, who leads a personal life totally foreign to her in more ways than one. In her daily life, she gets embroiled in international relations, which she hopes will demonstrate that she is becoming an adult, ready to make a difference in the world. But on the personal side of her life, will either Alex or the Sheik make Gidget forget about Moondoggie, or what will Moondoggie think when he runs into Gidget while on leave in New York, despite he having another female friend himself?—Huggo
