    All Change

Viewers should look on this as drama and judge it by those criteria. I saw and was intrigued by the GMC case. It was Fifty years ago and things have changed. Radically. It was solid drama and very watchable but viewers should not be taken in to think that things were really like that. The goof I spotted was the threat to appeal to the Court of Appeal whereas in that year it would be to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. I told you not to think of it as History. View it as Drama from 50 y ago. The characterisation and dialogue is good. It was surprising how low the production values were.

    Aging Lockwood lacks dynamism

I have been watching this series on TPTV. Interesting to see how the veteran star fared and the legal process when I was part of it.

I felt that Lockwood lacked dynamism as a barrister, compared with say. Leo Mckern as Rumpole.

The episode I watched today had a number of gaffes. Incuding Lockwood being in a solicitor's office, and being instructed on a child custody case of which she had no experience. The writers seemed to have little comprehension as to how the system worked.

After this series, apart from a guest role in a film she retired from acting, and non too soon.

    Fascinating British Courtroom Series

Since "Screenman" wrote his 2010 user review, the series has become available on DVD through the fine British company Network. As an American viewer who obtained the DVD set, I was intrigued comparing the differences between the American justice system and the procedures shown in almost 40 different cases of the English system. Margaret Lockwood has the time over the course of the three seasons to create a fully rounded character who is one of the more interesting achievements of her distinguished career. The program manages to sustain itself during these three years and mostly avoids the pitfall similar crime oriented shows like Law and Order have gotten into of being distracted by subplots about the private lives of the protagonists In this case, the conflict that arises is one between an up and coming woman barrister in the early years of feminism and several men she needs who want her to take a break from her work and consider marriage, which she feels is premature. Highly recommended!
