Maude & Walter invite Vivian and Arthur over for dinner, but Maude is not looking forward to the lovebirds cooing over each other. They arrive, but arguing. Arthur constantly talks about his dead wife.
Maude is excited about boarding a young girl from the Ghetto over the summer. She hopes to show the teenager all the wonderful things that are available. However, the teenager is sullen because she does not want to be there.
Maude finds a wallet and it turns out to be their neighbor who always has extramarital affairs. Maude returns it to the man's wife. Walter thinks it is wrong to give it to the wife instead of the man because a wallet is personal property.
Maude is depressed on her birthday, and is surprised by the party Walter throws for her. All Maude wants is for Walter to stay with her instead of going to talk with the men. Walter forgets his promise and Maude leaves her own party.
Arthur and Vivian are getting married, and Maude convinces them to have their wedding in Vermont. They all make the train trip, but a blizzard interrupts the trip and causes tempers to flair.
Maude notices Florida has been acting strange lately. She finds out Florida has been trying to find a way to tell Maude she is quitting. Since Florida's husband got a promotion, Florida decided she was going to be a stay-at-home housewife.
Walter is being audited by the tax department. When the auditor appears, Walter is worried and nervous, but Maude realizes the man looks familiar. She finally realizes he is the man that had made a pass at her over thirty years before.
Arthur gives Walter a stock tip which turns out to be a bad tip, causing Walter to lose a lot of money. When he finds out that Arthur did not invest any of his own money, Walter and Arthur argue as well as Maude and Vivian.
Carol and Chris plan a trip without Phillip. Carol is hesitant because Phillip has been causing problems at home recently. They go on vacation and Phillip gets worse. Maude realizes something has to be done.
Francie's boyfriend talks her into visiting Maude and asking for a lot of money. She puts on a good act about being tired, upset, and having problems. Francie and Hinkley plan to run away.
Arthur has been sending fan letters to John Wayne for years. When John Wayne visits the town to film a movie, for publicity he has a scheduled stop at Arthur's home. But the ceiling caves in, and the event is held instead at Maude's place.
Walter is upset and feeling unloved because of work pressure and things at home. Vivian is upset because Arthur does not like her dog. They turn to each other for comfort and a kiss. Maude and Arthur see it.
Walter tries to help his bookkeeper not commit suicide and suffers a mild heart attack at her apartment. At the hospital, he tries to hide the fact he was at a woman's apartment from Maude.
Since Florida has left, Maude hires a new maid, sight unseen. At first, she seems like a dream, but then she caters only to Walter since he is the master of the house. Maude corrects her.
When Walter and Arthur go on a camping trip, they get stopped for speeding by a cop who is only too happy to throw them in jail for not paying the ticket.
Maude brags to Vivian that an old boyfriend still finds her attractive when she receives a card from him. It becomes a competition for his supposed affection when Vivian also gets a card from the same old boyfriend.
When Walter and Arthur return from a Canadian fishing trip, Walter tells Maude he wants to move to Canada. He puts his appliance store up for sale. Maude is determined not to move.
Both Maude and Walter have their own problems to deal with, causing them to have restless nights. Maude is facing a hysterectomy and Walter has problems at his store.
Arthur tells Vivian at the last minute that he is bringing twelve people home for dinner. Frantic, Vivian asks Maude and Mrs. Naugatuck to help her. Everything prepared, Maude and Walter go to the party and find they are not invited.
Walter and Maude are delighted to hear that Walter's ex-wife is getting married which means he can stop alimony payments. When they find out the intended groom is Maude's rich uncle, they realize she is only marrying Henry for his money.
Walter and Maude host a New Year's Eve costume where everyone must wear outfits that represent their favorite years. Everyone has a different idea of what year was the best, so the costumes vary greatly.
