Sex & Nudity

  • There is a 4 1/2 minute but romantic and intimate sex scene between a man and woman with action intercut throughout the scene. Nothing graphic is shown.
  • Audiences were shocked in 1973 by rumours that the sex scene between stars Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie was unsimulated, and real. According to Bill Bart who watched the scene being shot and later, sadly, cut the scene that showed Christie's pubic hair at the demand of Chritie's then boyfriend Warren Beatty, the two actors were naked during filming and ignored the 'cut' call by the director. So it was very much unstaged sex.

Violence & Gore

  • some strong language.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Adults drink in the film casually

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A man with "second sight" envisions his young daughter drowning in a pond. He runs out and pulls her from the water, wailing in anguish as tries to revive her without success.
  • The scene described in the gore section may frighten children.
