Fond memories
Curtis G.21 July 2003
If memory serves, "Chopper One" played in the half-hour before ABC's "Firehouse." Those were my two favorite shows at the time. I couldn't tell you whether the show was actually good, but it was probably on par with every other cop show (except maybe "The Rookies"). I was a much less critical viewer at age 9.

Although I haven't seen an episode since they first aired, I still have memories of them: At the beginning of one episode, for example, the chopper lands with a kite tangled in the rotor blades; Mitch calls it a "five-cent disaster" or some such colorful term. In (another?) episode, the chopper is hijacked by bad guys. Foley stays on the ground while Burdick flies the chopper; in an attempt to psyche out the bad guys, one of the cops says, "Engine goes out on a chopper, you drop like a rock." At the climax, the chopper flies behind a hill and there's a huge explosion. Foley subdues his bad guy and it turns out that Burdick cleverly dropped an external fuel tank to fake a crash. Classic.

Aren't you a bit confused?

In reference to the comments made by "triciapurvis". Apparently you are getting this show confused with a different show that came out years later.

Joanna Cassiday starred with Mark Harmon and John Bennett Perry in "240:Robert", and action-show quite similar to "Emergency!" that ran from 1979 through 1980. There were a couple of episodes where a chopper figured prominently in this show with Ms. Cassiday involved in the chopper, so maybe that is the source of your confusion.

"Chopper One" most definitely did NOT have Joanna Cassiday in it, nor was there a third person starring as one of the chopper pilots in the show.

At any rate, for fans of these type shows, they were both somewhat enjoyable.

fond memory?

Warning: Spoilers
I remember the series Chopper One too. Do you remember that the chopper was actually flown by Joanna Cassidy, the two guys made up the rest of the team. It was fairly tame and was fine for family viewing. Don't recall any re-runs over here either. One episode I remember is that they had taken off with an injured victim leaving Foley on the ground as there was no room for him. They had just taken off and they saw him collapse. Luckily, after surgery he recovered and returned to duty. Not sure if this needed a spoiler warning as it is about an old TV series, put one on just in case and likewise haven't mentioned why he collapsed. Wonder if we would still enjoy the show now. Often when I watch old programmes I used to watch, when I see them now I just see all the flaws, bad continuity, some awful acting and poor sets, namely Starsky and Hutch, as a teenager I would never miss it as, like most teenage girls. Be still my beating heart. (laugh out loud)

Another Aaron Spelling Production
raysond4 August 2007
The short-lived television action/adventure-crime drama series "Chopper One" was another of ABC's attempts to cash in on the success of two of the most realistic shows of the 1970's "Emergency!",and the action drama "Police Story". However "Chopper One" was seen on Thursday nights right after another short-lived series as well "Firehouse",which was on before this show. This was another one of the Aaron Spelling produced shows that he served as executive producer. Spelling was the mastermind behind an array of shows that exploded onto the 1970's such as "The Rookies","Starsky and Hutch","Charlie's Angels","S.W.A.T.",and so forth.

Anyway, the real star of the show was the helicopter itself since Chopper One's registry numbers are N2098(on its bottom)and N40MC(on the side)with the symbol of The Los Angeles Police Department.

"Chopper One" was the radio code name for a special kind of police helicopter that was used by the Western California Police Department which was basically the standard police helicopter used by the California State Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles Police Department. Amidst the noise of whining propeller blades officers Don Burdick (Jim McMullan)and Gil Foley(Dirk Benedict)soared over the concrete jungles of Los Angeles chasing down the baddiest of the bad under the tight supervision of the commanding officer Captain McKeegan(Ted Hartley)while also to keep the helicopter running smoothly and operational was the head mechanic of Chopper One Mitch(Lou Frizzel). The officers were assigned helicopter duty and to make things more easier these guys were given the task to catch and apprehend dangerous criminals in tight places the police couldn't get to so with the guys up in the air they can get a description of the suspect whether he is located with the help of the local authorities. Their adversaries included chasing automobiles, bank robbers, rooftop snipers, renegade cyclists, kidnappers, muggers in the park and other desperadoes foolish enough to work out in the open. The series produced 13 episodes for ABC-TV from January 17, 1974 until the series finale on July 11,1974. The show, which ran a half-hour was on Thursday night and despite the ratings it received was right in the same time slot against a ratings powerhouse drama "The Waltons" which was on a rival network.

Several episodes in this short-lived series were very good including one episode where a child's kite gets tangled in the rotor blades where Mitch, the mechanic calls it "A Five-Cent disaster". Another astounding episode is where the chopper is hijacked by two dangerous convicts putting the two pilots in constant danger every minute. Foley stays on the ground while Burdick files the chopper with the two convicts inside. In an attempt to psyche out the bad guys where one of the cops says, "If the engine goes out on a chopper, you drop like a rock." At the climax of the story, the chopper files behind a hill and there is a huge explosion. Foley subdues the bad guy and it turns out the Burdick cleverly dropped an external fuel tank to fake a crash. Fantastic episode. One of the stars of this short-lived series who played Officer Gil Foley(Dirk Benedict),when on to other TV shows after this one ended. Benedict when on to portray Lt. Starbuck on "Battlestar Galactica",and also was Lt. Templeton Peck on the 80's action series "The A-Team".

This show ROCKED
HughsterRooster21 December 2005
Found this and thought it was useful: Chopper One - Radio code name of helicopter used by the Western California Police Department (WCPD) on the police drama CHOPPER ONE/ABC/1974. Amidst the noise of whining propeller blades, officers Don Burdick (Jim McMullan) and Gil Foley (Dirk Benedict) soared over the concrete canyons of a fictitious California city chasing down speeding automobiles, rooftop snipers, renegade cyclists and muggers in the park. Lou Frizzel played Mitch, their ground mechanic. Chopper One's registry numbers were N2098 (on its bottom) and N40MC (on its side). The series ran 13 episodes. TRIVIA NOTE: Chopper One is also the name of a pop-rock group founded by Jason Cropper in Hollywood in the Spring of '95. The band consists of his wife, Amy on bass; drummer Tyrone Rio and late comer Steve Garvy as second guitarist. According to the website Artist Direct.com: "Their live shows combine the edgy pop perfection of vintage Cheap Trick or the lush harmonies of The Beach Boys with the simple, supercharged power of The Who or even Nirvana."
