i too remember
bpalmatier14 November 2008
The very first time I saw Tony Hpkins was in "The Arcata Promise", which I saw on PBS, I imagine on some dusty, dusky day I dropt LSD and sat down alone and, saddened by my own hopeless relationship with a very lovely girl, who was in process of dumping me at the time. So I was watching, as I recall, my own life on the screen. I do recall she had run away to a place in California called Arcata. So I watched spellbound and cursed, both, in a world of Tony's clearly drunken rages and sudden brilliant introspections, which matched my own to my fancy, perfectly. It was as near a case of synchronous art-meets-life so uncanny I have never forgotten. I was horrified yet could not believe the dialog's's living hell as it rages toward a nihilistic fitting conclusion-so it seemed to me.Hopkins very best work.

I still remember even if no one else does

Warning: Spoilers
I saw this on PBS back in the seventies and remembered being very moved. I tried to find a copy of the play without success. I have never met or talked to anyone who has any knowledge of this play. It seems to have been a videotaped offering shot in the style of a live play. I still remember a line from it. Spoken by Theo as he contemplates taking his life, " I am more afraid of death than I am incompetent at life". Words to live by. A line was drawn between the character's life and his performance as the lead role in RICHARD II. Spoiler As you would expect, the play doesn't end happily. If your doppelganger is Richard II a tragic ending is almost impossible to avoid.
