The Doctor is back in every sense of the word.
During Doctor Who's classic run, the Doctor often approached new adventures with child-like curiosity. But the 2005 reboot offered a darker, more depressed Doctor who had become worn down by the Time War and the companions he couldn't save.
Not anymore. Disney+ has just released a new trailer for Doctor Who Season 14, and it suggests that Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor will be a larger-than-life character who approaches life with confidence and a sense of fun.
The Christmas special already introduced the newer, more lighthearted version of the Doctor, including him and Ruby Sunday singing a show tune to distract some evil goblins that wanted to eat Ruby's new foster sister.
It was campy as hell, but that was what Doctor Who needed. Season 14 will pick up where the special left off and combine humor and fun with more serious undertones.

This is new. Do we like it?
Doctor Who will be back in its traditional place on Saturday evenings in the UK when series 14 arrives, but before it airs on BBC One, new episodes will be available to stream on BBC iPlayer from midnight on Friday night/Saturday morning. It’s a simulcast deal, meaning that the episodes will be available to stream on BBC iPlayer and Disney+ at the exact same time globally each week, hours ahead of the traditional broadcast slot in the UK.
In other words: good luck avoiding spoilers if you’re waiting to watch at Saturday teatime with the family.
When is that happening? At the stroke of midnight on the morning of Saturday May 11 in the UK, which will be Friday May 10 at 7 pm Et in the US due to the time difference.
The other big news is that series 14 will begin with a double-bill.

Blonde, blue-eyed Brit actress Millie Gibson ("Coronation Street") who played 'Ruby Sunday' in the BBC’s 2023 “Doctor Who Christmas Special”, has exited the role after one season of the Disney-produced TV series and replaced by a new ‘woke’ companion to be played by actress Varada Sethu (“Andor”):
"..."I am beyond honored to be cast as the Doctor’s 'companion', “ said Gibson when she was first hired to play ‘Ruby Sunday’.
"It is a gift of a role, and a dream come true, and I will do everything to try and fill the boots the fellow companions have travelled in before me.
"And what better way to do that than being by the fabulous Ncuti Gatwa’s side..."
According to new “Doctor Who” actor Gatwa, "...Millie just is 'the companion'. She is full of talent, strength, she has a cheeky sparkle in her eye and is sharp as a razor.

You’re never too old, or too skilled a hired killer, to be reminded: Mama is always right.
That sentiment is at the heart of The Brothers Sun, which Netflix released Thursday. If not already apparent, the Covid-19 pandemic of recent years—and its subsequent global economic impact—has shone a spotlight on just how precarious most American lives actually are, whether publicly or behind closed doors.
It’s debatable whether anyone truly works a billion dollars hard or smart, yet wealth continues to amass in the hands of an obnoxious mega-rich elite, leaving most of us one bad day away from complete financial ruin. That is, if we don’t already exist in a chronic state of economic depression to begin with. But our democracy (and tax dollars!) provides guardrails against such dire domestic predicaments, right? Well, in theory…
In practice, however, the US welfare system is under constant threat from within—the kneecapping of government assistance programs becoming a reliable wedge issue for compounding generations of conservative politics.
Then again, there’s an equally influential history of civil rights advocates...

Piper Laurie, who blossomed as an actress only after extricating herself from the studio system and went on to rack up three Oscar nominations, has died. She was 91.
Laurie’s manager Marion Rosenberg confirmed the news to Variety, writing, “A beautiful human being and one of the great talents of our time.”
Laurie scored her first Oscar nomination for her work opposite Paul Newman in 1961’s classic poolhall drama “The Hustler,” in which she played an alcoholic who memorably tells Newman’s character, “Look, I’ve got troubles and I think maybe you’ve got troubles. Maybe it’d be better if we just leave each other alone.”
Though she informally retired to raise a family for more than a decade, she returned to film and television in the mid-’70s and racked up an impressive roster of characterizations, including Oscar-nominated turns in “Carrie” and in “Children of a Lesser God,...

Range Media Partners has signed filmmaker Kat Wood for representation.
The U.K.-born and L.A.-based director and screenwriter was a BBC broadcast journalist before making her mark on Hollywood. Wood, who was named to Screen International’s “Stars of Tomorrow” list, has shown her proficiency as a screenwriter, setting up a high-profile genre feature every year for the last six years.
Last August, Thunder Road Pictures optioned “Enigma,” Wood’s original contemporary supernatural spy thriller. The film – which Wood will executive produce — follows British spy Emma Taylor who is suddenly tasked with hiding a mysterious and dangerous artifact that falls into her hands. The project has been described as a “reverse Indiana Jones,” meaning that the story is about someone whose job is focused on “hiding rather than finding,” thus turning traditional adventure film tropes on their head.

Elaine Bauer Brooks is leaving CBS Media Ventures as EVP of development and multiplatform content, TheWrap has learned.
Bauer Brooks’ exit follows her nine-year tenure at the company within the development department, where she served as head of development for the past four years. Her departure also comes two weeks after CBS Media Ventures president Steve LoCascio announced his retirement as the division was restructured and absorbed under the oversight of Wendy McMahon, who was recently appointed as president and CEO of CBS News and Stations and CBS Media Ventures.
“This is a special place with one of the most creative and innovative teams in the business, so this was not an easy decision, but it is the right one for me,” Bauer Brooks wrote in a Wednesday memo obtained by TheWrap. Unlike their just opened “Haunted Mansion”, Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” might ultimately break even. If it does, its performance on PVOD could be make or break.
Of note, suggesting Disney’s much-revised strategy, this release came after nine weekends in theaters (60 days) and ahead of future Disney+ streaming.
With a reported production cost of $250 million and the usual added expense, its ultimate worldwide gross of $600 million, though otherwise impressive, means post-theatrical revenues need to be substantial. Opening #1 on all charts its initial week is a good first step.
What it will need is multiple weeks of strong play beyond a default first week #1. Last week “The Flash” (Warner Bros.), a far smaller performer in theaters, did debut at the top. But this week it’s only #2 on one chart (Vudu), while third and fourth elsewhere. The bounty for PVOD comes from long term, and high end charts (with the...

With a troubled history and soft box office, DC Comics’ “The Flash” ($19.99) on PVOD gives Warner Bros. its second #1 film right now. As “Barbie” comes off a $162 million domestic opening in theaters, “The Flash” takes the top spot at all three VOD charts this week, just over a month after debuting in theaters. Never mind that “Barbie” made more in its opening weekend than “The Flash” did in its under-$110 million domestic run, on a movie with twice the production cost.
In an even quicker turnaround, “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken” ($19.99), consistent with Universal’s home release strategy after three weekends in theaters, also made all three lists after the animated feature grossed $15 million. Vudu, with a revenue-based chart that favors higher-priced titles, is best at #3.

Anthony De La Torre and Lana Condor discuss upcoming big-day wedding planning updates. On June 27 in New York City, Lana Condor smiles as she exits the Today Show studios.
The 26-year-old actress Lana Condor joined Hoda and Jenna to discuss Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, her most recent film. She talked openly about the movie and her approaching nuptials to her longtime boyfriend Anthony De La Torre, even sharing what they choose to do in place of a lavish wedding.
The actress revealed that since the couple’s engagement became public, she has been planning their marriage while keeping her cool.
Growing up, I always knew I wanted to be married and have a lovely wedding, but I needed to be more kind to plan every detail on Pinterest, Condor said.
Lana Condor portrays a high school student who transforms into an all-powerful squid in her newest animated film, Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken.

Disney’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” lassoed the top spot on domestic box office charts, collecting an underwhelming $60 million in its opening weekend.
That’s a decent amount of money for a tentpole that’s aimed at older audiences, but “Indiana Jones 5,” one of the most expensive movies ever, cost $295 million before marketing. It’ll take a heroic feat, one that would test even an enduring legend like Indiana Jones, for the fifth installment in the decades-old franchise to become profitable in its theatrical run.
It was a disappointing weekend at the box office as “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken,” a $70 million-budgeted family film from DreamWorks and Universal, cratered in its sixth-place debut with $5.2 million. In addition to “Dial of Destiny” and “Ruby Gillman,” the DC superhero adventure “The Flash” tumbled to the No. 8 spot in its third weekend of release with $5 million, another embarrassing 67% drop. “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” isn’t showing signs that it will turn a theatrical profit for Disney and Lucasfilm, earning $24 million from 4,600 theaters on its opening day as industry estimates project a $60 million opening weekend.
While that’s on the lower end of the $60-$65 million projections that independent trackers had for the fifth and final “Indiana Jones” movie, it’s well short of the $100 million opening weekend that “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” had in 2008. Those are the sort of numbers that “Dial of Destiny” needs to break even against its reported $295 million budget before a top-dollar marketing campaign that included a world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and screenings and press tours for the cast in Berlin and Sicily.
Full demographic breakdowns will be available on Sunday, but presale numbers indicated that interest in “Indiana Jones 5” skewed significantly towards older audiences,...

“I remember seeing a film that became really formative for me called ‘Ruby in Paradise.’ It was a film about a young woman finding herself. It’s a simple film. A beautiful film. And I thought, ‘Wow. I didn’t know a film could be like this.’ I’d never seen anything like this before.”
That was director Ava DuVernay in the documentary “Only in Theaters” talking about “Ruby in Paradise,” winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 1993 Sundance Film Festival and one of several exquisitely crafted dramas from Florida writer-director Victor Nunez. Since his feature debut “Gal Young Un” in 1979, Nunez has slowly, quietly, and consistently built one of the American independent cinema’s most vital bodies of work, one centered around complex regional character studies like “Ruby” and its follow-up “Ulee’s Gold,” for which Peter Fonda was nominated for an Oscar.

Kirk DeMicco’s Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken feels torn between being a story of racial difference and offering a compelling vision of teenage growing pains. Sweet but narratively thin and didactic, the latest from DreamWorks Animation always seems as if it’s trying to find its footing, which is apt insofar as its main character, a 15-year-old champion mathlete named Ruby (Lana Condor), is trying to understand her place in the world.
Ruby goes through high school wondering why her parents, Agatha (Toni Collette) and Arthur (Colman Domingo), are so strict about keeping her away from sea water. And, unfortunately for Ruby, that includes not being able to attend her high school prom, as it’s set to take place on a massive cruise ship in the ocean. One day, while flirting with Connor (Jaboukie Young-White), Ruby accidentally pushes her would-be paramour into the ocean, and upon diving in after...

If Summer 2023 box office has a shot of meeting its optimistic $4 billion projection, the June movie lineup needs to step up. Since May 5, when the season began with Marvel release “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” receipts are down over five percent from last year. To achieve $4 billion, returns now through Labor Day would have to be 26 percent ahead of 2022, when box office totaled just under $3.4 billion.
It’s still doable, but the variables are… more variable after May failed to meet its optimistic expectations. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” didn’t hold as well as hoped, and everything beyond the three top releases proved to be only modest contributors.
Despite three lucrative franchises in “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “Fast X,” May will total about $760 million. That’s down from $785 million in 2022, which had only two franchises with “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and “Top Gun: Maverick.

It’s merger mania!
The $21.4 billion deal between Worldwide Wrestling Entertainment and the Endeavor Group-owned Ultimate Fighting Championship is poised to shake up the future of live sports entertainment.
Sports and particularly live events are seen as a key means of attracting audiences to streaming services and linear networks alike, which is prompting a scramble to secure rights, assemble assets and bolster existing programming. Though rising interest rates and an uncertain economic environment may have pressed pause on megadeals, there’s avid interest in smaller-scale dealmaking, whether that’s a merger like the UFC-WWE combination or long-term agreements with leagues.
“Sports entertainment has never been more valuable than it is today. Endeavor saw an opportunity, and leapt on it,” UCLA professor and former NBC and Upn executive Tom Nunan told TheWrap.

"John Wick" is undoubtedly one of the most brutal action franchises of all time. Just look at the numbers. In the first three "John Wick" films, the beloved assassin kills a total of 299 people, with "John Wick: Chapter 2" serving as the deadliest film in the series. One eagle-eyed fan claims that John offs 140 people in "John Wick: Chapter 4" (depending on how you count), bringing his total kills to 439. This makes him one of the most prolific murderers in all of film history, as his body count is even higher than Michael Meyers' and Jason Voorhees' — combined!
Of course, not every kill makes a huge impact. John's weapon of choice is a pistol, and gunshots become almost mundane after a while. Don't get us wrong, being shot in the head is an absolutely brutal way to go, but there are different levels of viciousness in the "John Wick" universe.

Ready to return to the world of “Trolls?” Because “Trolls Band Together” is nearly here (watch the brand-new trailer above). It’s a hoot.
And what’s more, TheWrap spoke with director Walt Dohrn and producer Gina Shay about the upcoming sequel and what we can expect when the band gets back together.
When asked about the title of the movie, Dohrn replied: “First of all, it’s the reunion of a band. We didn’t know this when we made the other films but Branch [the character played by Justin Timberlake] has four brothers. This was 20 years ago, when he was a kid, they all used to be in a family band together a boy band called Bro Zone. [The band] broke up 20 years ago. As bands do and as big brothers do, they go out into the world. But we find out at the top of this movie that one of the brothers has been kidnapped.

This article discusses difficult subject matter including (but not limited to) postpartum psychosis.
Bess Wohl's timely and powerful "Baby Ruby" opens with the main character Jo (Noémie Merlant) carefully making a banner for her baby shower. Her methodical cutting and placement of the letters demonstrate how much she enjoys being organized and in control, as well as the pressure she feels to curate the perfect life and aesthetic for her website and social media pages. Jo is not just a person or a mother-to-be: she is a brand. After the birth of Ruby, she discovers motherhood is far more difficult than glossy Instagram photos portray it to be.
The entire film is through her point of view as she spirals into a whirlwind of depression, anxiety, and loneliness. She also starts having unsettling hallucinations that turn out to be symptoms of postpartum psychosis. One of the most captivating aspects...

To read the logline of Freeridge, you might assume it’d fit neatly into Netflix’s extensive catalog of supernatural teen shows, alongside Wednesday or Stranger Things. Its central premise involves a curse, one that our 15ish-year-old heroes fear has befallen them thanks to a mysterious old box and their increasingly desperate efforts to undo its effects.
But the “ooky-spooky” stuff turns out to be less the main event than the clothesline on which the On My Block spinoff hangs its real, relatable concerns: the uncertainty of the future, the confusion of young love, the comfort and the burden of family. And while Freeridge emerges as a lighter show than its predecessor, it shares the same empathetic heart, playful sense of humor and, above all, deeply endearing affection for its young leads.
The unofficial leader of Freeridge‘s central quartet is Gloria (Keyla Monterroso Mejia), the type of problem-solving go-getter...

Stephen Hendry said he was fined by snooker bosses after pulling out of events due to his appearance on The Masked Singer.
The seven-time world champion, 54, was revealed as the character Rubbish on the ITV celebrity singing show on Saturday.
Asked by the Pa news agency what he told people he was doing while keeping his identity a secret, the former world number one said: “I do have wildcards to play in some snooker events and I actually pulled out of a couple of events and got fined by the Wpbsa (World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association) for doing it.
“And I couldn’t tell them why because this recording was going on and I couldn’t obviously say why I pulled out… I just said ‘Look, I can’t play the tournament’.
“So, yeah, it was, very, very, very strange… you’re dying to tell people what you’re doing but you can’t.

Ruby Baker’s carefree days of staying out past curfew, carousing with her besties, and simply being a teenager are all over. The nightmare of The Glass House begins with the protagonist (Leelee Sobieski) learning her parents, David and Grace, have both died in a car accident. Ruby and her younger brother Rhett (Trevor Morgan) are then quickly taken in by family friends and former neighbors Terry and Erin Glass, whose home is located in Malibu. Obviously a big life adjustment like this requires some time, but Ruby’s grief turns into suspicion. There’s something not right about her new guardians.
In this 2001 thriller, those first couple of scenes with the whole Baker clan are wholesome and inviting; David and Grace’s last moments with their children are warmly colored and glowing. But once they’re gone and the Baker children move into their foster home, the movie gradually becomes cold and severe.

Pop culture — at least in the Western world — treats pregnancy and early motherhood as a magical time, when back aches and sleepless nights are a mere inconvenience in what is otherwise a fantastic, love-fuelled, once-in-a-lifetime journey. That is bulls***. And with "Baby Ruby," Bess Wohl is setting the record straight.
Premiering at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, "Baby Ruby" is a tense, visceral psychological thriller that sets out to dismantle everything you think you know about being a mom. Written and directed by Tony-nominated American playwright Bess Wohl, the film centers on the independent, perfectionist, mom-to-be Jo (Noémie Merlant), who branded herself as a chic lifestyle influencer through her successful blog, "Love, Joséphine." Using the power of the internet — and, let's face it, her good looks and wealth — Jo has carefully curated an aspirational image for her online followers. She takes it all on herself; taking control of every aspect...
