Co-founder of the Druid theatre in Galway, he achieved soap fame as Miley Byrne

The Irish actor Mick Lally, who has died aged 64, succeeded in straddling the worlds of stage, television and film. In particular, he was a vital presence in the renaissance of Irish drama in the 1970s and 80s, while making himself a household name in Radio Telefís Éireann's soap operas Bracken and Glenroe.

The eldest of seven children on a 30-acre hill farm in Tourmakeady, County Mayo, in the Gaelic-speaking west of Ireland, Lally, through the generosity of an emigrant uncle, attended St Mary's College in Galway and University College Galway, where he read Irish and history. In extra-curricular time, he acted in the Irish-language college drama society, and won the British and Irish intervarsity boxing championship. He would later comment that acting, even in ensemble, was not unlike being alone in the ring.

'In Treatment' Enlists Two More Actors for the Upcoming Season

Back in June, we reported that HBO’s In Treatment was renewed for a second season, despite receiving mediocre ratings. In fact, the daily drama will be bringing back Gabriel Byrne as the Washington-based psychotherapist Paul Weston, who deals with several patients every week until Friday, when he visits his own therapist, Gina Toll (Dianne Wiest). Season 2 of the series might see some of the original characters leave, but fans mustn’t worry because there are a few who have stepped up to receive Treatment.

The Hollywood Reporter recently revealed that Hope Davis and John Mahoney are joining the cast of the second season of In Treatment, which is produced by Warren Leight, Rodrigo Garcia, Hagai Levi, Stephen Levinson, Mark Wahlberg and Paris Barclay.

Forty-four-year-old Hope Davis, who appeared in series Six Degrees and Deadline and movies The Daytrippers, Arlington Road and About Schmidt, will play Mira, a high-powered malpractice
