The Vampire Diaries is known for its love triangles, but sometimes, it's nice to get a storyline about something else...

5.19 Man On Fire
Elena used to be a worthy character for us to follow through the madcap world of The Vampire Diaries, but not anymore. If this year’s Katherine body-snatch arc proved anything, other than the fact that Nina Dobrev is not at fault for the show’s current staleness, it’s that we can survive pretty well without our go-to heroine. And that’s where this episode, Man on Fire, shone. The love triangle gets all of the headlines (if the show even got headlines anymore, that is) but the strength of Vampire Diaries is in its male relationships.
There’s a reason the show’s nosedive in quality coincided with Alaric’s death back in the season three finale,...

Australia... it's a vast, beautiful, welcoming country. It's also full to bursting with things that can kill you, if the big screen is to be believed. Inspired by Mia Wasikowska's plucky 1,700-mile trek across the Outback in Tracks, we flag up the traps and tropes she should watch out for.
(Un)Natural Phenomena
Exotic wildlife proliferates Down Under, most of it deceptively lethal. Witness the baby stolen by a dingo in horrifying Meryl Streep-starrer A Cry In The Dark (1988). The same – real – tragedy loosely inspired Razorback, a mullet-tastic 1984 horror about a giant marauding pig, directed by Highlander's Russell Mulcahy (mooted tagline: 'There Can Only Be Oink'). The less said about the ballet-dancing were-roos of The Marsupials: The Howling III (1987), the better.
Much more convincing is the giant CG crocodile munching Radha Mitchell's boat tour group (ex-Neighbours actors constitute an Outback peril all of their own) in 2007's Rogue,...

There is a terrible plague affecting modern society. I’m not talking about war, or famine or even global warming. This affliction began in the murky depths of daytime telly and has crawled, oozing, into the evening and weekend schedules like some monstrous new species. I am referring, of course, to the not-so-new breed of TV property programs.
As the economy continues to stumble and the housing market wheezes its way to recovery, it seems an inverse trend is taking place. Alongside the increasing inability for most decent and hardworking Britons to actually be able to buy or indeed build a place to live, there appears to be a growing propensity for TV toffs to tell us all about the joys of doing exactly that! The inner grump in me is compelled to combat this...
