Sex & Nudity

  • Frequent sex references and sexual moments.
  • The Foretelling: References to "ravishing" as a term for sex. References to genitals being assigned to a tree. Funny.
  • The Archbishop: Edmund wears a codpiece which looks like an erect penis to frighten the clergy at a church. When he is crowned archbishop, he puts a hat over the codpiece. A pair of fake breasts are shown. Sexual favours with nuns are mentioned, as well as a vibrator.
  • The Black Seal: Friar Bellows has sex with a woman onscreen, but it is funny in some ways when Edmund walks in on him.

Violence & Gore

  • Much comical gore and violence. Explained in detail here.
  • The Foretelling: Richard III is beheaded, gory but funny. His bloodied ghost has a head which flies around. A battle is seen for a moment.
  • The Queen of Spain's Beard: Baldrick is seen with bruises, implied for comedy. Edmund and Percy fight.
  • The Archbishop: A massive fight occurs in the nunnery, very funny on all levels. Several characters die onscreen. Multiple archbishops are killed in gruesome but funny and comical ways offscreen.
  • Witchsmeller Pursuaivant: A man sets on fire. A horse dies and leaves bloodstains on a piece of paper. The ashes of a woman and her cat are found on the floor. Several people die of the bubonic plague. Richard stabs a door with a sword.

Profanity

  • A lot of "bloody", "bastard", "damn" and the occasional "shit". Many sexual terms are used. A lot of profanity. Compare with "The Young Ones".

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Some characters are seen to be on drugs or drunk in some scenes.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • The Queen of Spain's Beard: The whole episode revolves around sex. There are many in-depth discussions of sex and marriage. The Spanish Infanta and Baldrick have rough sex, but you never see any of it. Edmund marries a child, but behaves in a non-sexual manner here. Edmund pretends to be homosexual, and many funny references to it are made.
  • Born to be King: Whole episode revolves around relationships and if Harry is a bastard, so that Edmund can take the throne. Incriminating letters full of sex references and innuendo are found and read aloud, but reveal eventually that Edmund is the bastard child of his mother and a Scottish warlord.
  • Witchsmeller Pursuaivant: Edmund is referenced to have had sex with a village woman and given birth to a poodle, who is apparently the son of the devil. Very funny. Edmund's child wife appears again.

Violence & Gore

  • Born to be King: A severed head is dumped on the dining table, very funny. Richard comes back from fighting covered in blood, and imitates decapitation with a fruit knife. A man has his head blown off by a cannon. A man is stabbed with a fake theatre knife.
  • The Black Seal: Overall the goriest and most violent episode of all. Several fights occur and people are killed. Rotting corpses are shown in a dungeon. A man is shot with an arrow. Several people are stabbed. Two men are hanged. The gang of evil-doers are poisoned by Baldrick and Percy. Edmund is put in a machine which will mutilate him and torture him in bloody and sexual ways. Sadly, this happens, though offscreen. A bloodied Edmund is shown on his deathbed in the great hall, where the rest of the cast apart from Edmund, Baldrick and Percy drink from the poisoned vat of wine and die. Edmund then takes the poison and dies. Very sad. His dead mutilated body plays over the end credits.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Wine is drunk, poisoned in the final episode.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Not many, but in "The Black Seal" we have the very upsetting final scenes of the death of the Edmund, with him lying on his deathbed with sad music over the end credits.
