Controversial while he may be, Tom Cruise is the quintessential movie star. You can love him or hate him, but his on-screen charisma and willingness to go all in for all his roles is what makes him, even now, a considerable box-office draw.
He embodies cinema, and his dedication to pulling out all the stops in whatever he does—whether riding off a cliff on a bike or carrying out an impossible fight sequence on the top of a moving practically-constructed train—evidences his legacy and brand in Hollywood.

But this trait of his isn’t one he cultivated recently. Even before the plethora of Mission: Impossible films showed us Cruise’s knack for committing to the unimaginable, there was one movie, right after Top Gun and The Color of Money, called Cocktail (1988), where the actor’s diligence and tenacity spoke volumes of his character.

Growing up in a less-than-affluent household, it wasn’t until his 20s that Tom Cruise found his footing in Hollywood, thanks to 1983’s Risky Business. However, unlike Conor McGregor, who is said to have made history with his earnings from Doug Liman’s Road House remake, the Legend Star was paid considerably less for his debut role.
But while it was nowhere close to his later salaries, which saw the actor racking in millions, the Oscar-nominated actor used his first salary to perform an invaluable act for his sibling. Tom Cruise Put His Earnings From Risky Business to His Sister’s College Fees

Tom Cruise and the Art of Leaving Us Wanting More Let’s talk about Tom Cruise, shall we? The man’s been sprinting across our screens for decades, leaving a trail of classic films in his wake. And in the age where Hollywood recycles ideas more than a hipster with a compost bin, it’s only natural to wonder: what if some of those classics got a sequel? Joel Goodsen’s Next Risky Venture Remember Risky Business? Of course, you do. It’s the film that made both Ray-Bans and Bob Seger’s ‘Old Time Rock and Roll’ cooler than the other side of the pillow.

Blunt expressed excitement about the prospect of a sequel, though she admitted time would be needed for its vision to come together. "It could be good," she said. "I think when we first talked about a sequel, it was right before I was about to do Mary Poppins, so it was quite awhile ago. The news of Tom Cruise setting a “strategic partnership” with Warner Bros. has certain “Top Gun” fans barrel-rolling out of control. Don’t panic, put on your oxygen mask before you attempt to help others — and definitely don’t jump without a chute, because a third “Top Gun” has been in development for a while now, a source told IndieWire.
“Top Gun: Maverick” screenwriter Ehren Kruger is working on the next film in the franchise, according to Puck News. The threequel-creating installment will reunite Cruise with his “Maverick” co-stars Miles Teller and Glen Powell. Producers Jerry Bruckheimer and David Ellison will be back, and “Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski is also set to return — either as director (again), or at least to produce.

Despite his immense success, Tom Cruise has never won an Oscar, but with his new deal focusing on original movies, that could change soon. Cruise has been nominated for an Oscar four times but has yet to receive the coveted award. The Academy Awards don't often recognize performances in franchise movies, so Cruise's return to original films may increase his chances of winning an Oscar.
Tom Cruise is, without a doubt, one of the most accomplished actors in Hollywood. However, one achievement has eluded the star over the course of his 43-year career. Cruise's breakout role was as Joel in Risky Business in 1983, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance. He starred as Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in Top Gun a few years later and quickly cemented himself as one of Hollywood's leading men. Tom Cruise has taken a flying leap, though this time not on a motorcycle and off of a cliff. No, Cruise is headed to Burbank as part of a new strategic partnership with Warner Bros. Tom Cruise's priority should be a long-delayed sequel to the successful sci-fi movie Edge of Tomorrow, rather than focusing on a third Top Gun film. Edge of Tomorrow, released in 2014, was a critical and commercial success, leaving the door open for a sequel that has been delayed for too long. Despite the interest in a potential Top Gun 3, the idea of Edge of Tomorrow 2 finally happening overshadows the excitement for another Top Gun installment. Cruise should prioritize making the long-delayed sequel a reality.

NCIS fans are familiar with Mark Harmon as Leroy Jethro Gibbs. He joined the NCIS team in 2003 — and years before that, fans knew him for his dashing good looks. Harmon was named People’s Sexiest Man Alive in 1986, and he had no trouble attracting women. While speaking to the publication, he discussed his brief hookup with star Heather Locklear.
‘NCIS’ star Mark Harmon once said his brief hookup with Heather Locklear wasn’t special
Mark Harmon is known for his time as Leroy Jethro Gibbs in NCIS, but true fans of the actor know he was once crowned the Sexiest Man Alive by People. Harmon made viewers swoon after first starring as Dr. Robert Caldwell in St. Elsewhere. His co-star, Cristina Pickles, who played nurse Helen Rosenthal in St. Elsewhere, commented on how women reacted to seeing Harmon.

Tom Cruise's star power was evident in the success of the Mission Impossible franchise, but his ability to draw audiences was also apparent in the box office numbers of the critically panned film, The Mummy. The Mummy, despite being a critical failure, grossed a significant amount of money thanks to Tom Cruise's star power. The film's box office success underscores the impact that he has, regardless of the quality of the movie. Even Tom Cruise's star power couldn't have saved Universal's Dark Universe. The Mummy's flaws extended beyond Cruise's performance, and the ambitious cinematic universe would have likely crumbled even if the film had been a success.

After Risky Business, Tom Cruise was catapulted into the spotlight. Sure, there was Taps and The Outsiders, but once he slid across the floor in his skivvies, he was it. And he could choose any project he wanted, including a picture with David Lynch. As it turns out, Tom Cruise was in contention for the role of Paul Atreides in 1984’s Dune but couldn’t quite grasp Frank Herbert’s language.
As detailed in Max Evry’s oral history A Masterpiece in Disarray: David Lynch’s Dune, Tom Cruise could have led the sci-fi flop instead of, you know, headlining Top Gun and shooting pool with Paul Newman. According to Everett McGill, who played Fremen leader Stilgar, “I have a faint recollection that Tom Cruise had some difficulty with the language during his screen test.” Sean Young, who played Chani, delivered an odd cheapshot, saying, “Maybe they hadn’t gotten...

Tom Cruise helped Timothée Chalamet in his performance for Dune: Part Two, inspiring him with an email about Old Hollywood standards. Chalamet is a fan of Top Gun: Maverick and watched it eight times while filming Dune, finding it greatly inspiring. Dune: Part Two is set to be released on March 15, 2024, by Warner Bros. Pictures.
Tom Cruise is helping Timothée Chalamet become one of the next great movie stars. The young actor has revealed how the Hollywood veteran helped him in his performance for Dune: Part Two, one of Chalamet's biggest acting challenges. Cruise began his career at the age of 19, participating in the 1981 films Endless Love and Taps. Two years later he would not only release four more films, but would also have his big break in Paul Brickman's Risky Business. Top Gun 3 will have an established cast for the first time, adding to its appeal and potentially surpassing the success of Top Gun 2. The third film in the franchise will bring consistency to the storyline and allow for deeper exploration of character backstories and motivations. Tom Cruise's limited appearance in Top Gun 3 will differentiate it from its predecessors and focus on new narrative directions and character arcs.
If Top Gun 3 happens somewhere down the line, it will have one unique ingredient that will set it apart from Top Gun: Maverick. Although no official announcements surrounding a third Top Gun movie have been made yet, it seems inevitable considering Top Gun: Maverick's monumental box office numbers and impressive critical ratings. The power and popularity of Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight,” which first famously appeared on TV in Season 1 of Michael Mann’s Miami Vice, has outlasted 30 years of screen appearances in everything from Risky Business to a Cadbury chocolate bar ad to a fictional Mike Tyson’s affinity for the tune in the original Hangover. Now, it’s been reinvented as the theme song for one of TV’s most popular shows.
ESPN said today that Monday Night Football will utilize a version of the song that combines the talents of Chris Stapleton, Snoop Dogg and Cindy Blackman Santana. The first clip of the collaboration was released via a new music video open that will be played before every game.

Glengarry Glenn Ross: Alec Baldwin's expletive-riddled tirade becomes the best single-scene performance in a film filled with heavy hitters. Basic Instinct: Sharon Stone's leg-crossing scene shocks viewers and reinvigorates the femme fatale interrogation trope. Risky Business: Tom Cruise's iconic dance in his underwear captures the euphoric freedom of being home alone and instantly made him a star.
Some movies scenes are so iconic that they manage to overshadow the wider films in which they appear. Every film aspires to produce a moment so resonant that it becomes an instrumental piece of cinema culture. However, there’s a downside to a scene reaching this status. The film itself will necessarily be compared to their most famous and beloved moment, and not all of them measure up. In such a case, the film even risks sinking in the general public estimation due to unfavorable comparison to its highest point.

It’s been a long, sexless decade or two for American cinema, but this summer, we’re finally getting films about laughs and lust again.
The 2023 Summer film season has been bookended by two comedies about women desperate for sex, albeit for very different reasons. “No Hard Feelings,” starring Jennifer Lawrence as a woman who reluctantly accepts a Craigslist job to “date” the son of a rich couple in exchange for a car, arrived in June. Closing out August comes the theatrical release of South by Southwest premiere “Bottoms,” directed by “Shiva Baby” filmmaker Emma Seligman and starring Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri as two horny, unpopular lesbian teenagers who start a “female self-defense program” (read: fight club) in a bid to impress their cheerleader crushes.
Both films have been well-received by critics and audiences alike; “No Hard Feelings” made a healthy amount of money with $86.7 million at the global box office,...

Joe Pantoliano's association with villainous roles was a big reason why he was perfect for the part of Teddy in Memento. Christopher Nolan initially resisted casting Pantoliano because he was concerned that the audience wouldn't trust him due to his previous villainous roles. Pantoliano's performance added subtlety to the character of Teddy and maintained the mystery surrounding him, making him a great choice for the role.
Joe Pantoliano ended up being the perfect choice for the role of Teddy in Memento, but Christopher Nolan initially didn’t want to cast him for one reason in particular. Memento stars Guy Pearce as Leonard Shelby, a man with short-term memory loss who uses a series of tattooed clues to track down his wife’s killer. 1990’s Days of Thunder was the end of an era for Tom Cruise. It would be the last movie he’d make as part of his “youth” phase, which began with Risky Business. At the time, he was best known as the cocky young hot shot, but when this movie underperformed at the box office, Cruise took some time off and returned as a more seasoned leading man, with 1992’s A Few Good Men kicking off an unprecedented streak of hits. While Days of Thunder has a valued place in Tom Cruise’s filmography and remains a popular title, when it came out, the movie was considered such a disappointment that the movie’s two producers, Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckkeimer’s deal with Paramount Pictures came to a fractious end. So what happened?
“Top Gun on Wheels” – that’s what everyone called Days of Thunder in the summer of 1990. The studio.

The ’80s was a decade of movies that you can hear at a roar even on mute. A screenshot of Tom Cruise and Rebecca De Mornay aboard the train in “Risky Business” has a sound to it. The same goes for a still image of Kaneda riding towards Neo-Tokyo in “Akira,” or Jack Nicholson’s car snaking its way up the mountains towards the Overlook Hotel during the opening titles of “The Shining.”
It was a decade of synths and sad jazz; a decade of legends reaching the height of their powers (e.g. John Williams and Ennio Morricone), and of newcomers from other disciplines becoming cinematic virtuosos in their own right (e.g. Ryuichi Sakamoto and Philip Glass). The movies had never sounded that way before, but the best film scores of the ’80s — our picks are listed below — continue to echo in our minds as if they’ve always been there.

Two personal, stylish, and distinctive films celebrate major birthdays this month: “Risky Business” turned 40 August 5 and August 1 marked the 50th anniversary of the release of “American Graffiti.”
Two other personal, stylish, and distinctive films also celebrate their blockbuster success this August: “Barbie,” which is now $1 billion worldwide and counting, and “Oppenheimer,” which just crossed $600 million.
August is generally known for providing the dog days of summer box office. It’s the end of the road, kids are going back to school. There’s no time for a blockbuster to stretch its legs and no one’s in the mood for anything weighty. The current studio release calendar bears out that logic with “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” “The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” “Gran Turismo,” “Blue Beetle,” and “Strays.”

Tom Cruise's breakout role in Risky Business helped him become a true movie star by showcasing his comedic talents and charm to a larger audience. Risky Business remains one of Cruise's best non-action movies, representing a period of cinema that was less serious and more willing to have fun. The iconic dance scene in Risky Business has become a pop culture moment and exemplifies Cruise's willingness to get goofy and have fun, which resonated with audiences and helped solidify his popularity.

Music often plays an integral part in film and TV, but for these 15 songs film and TV played an integral part in their music videos, with the clips paying homage to (or simply ripping off) popular shows and movies. While the golden age of music videos is arguably a thing of the past, it's still a medium that deserves to be celebrated for its ability to tell effective stories. However, in these cases, the story being told was actually found elsewhere - in big and small screen productions that came before.
Artists ranging from My Chemical Romance to Ariana Grande have referenced popular films and TV shows in their music videos. The range of movies and shows parodied is equally as wide-ranging, including '90s sketch shows, '80s sci-fi epics, and '00s teen rom-coms, proving that inspiration can come from the unlikeliest of sources to make something truly memorable.

While Esai Morales and Tom Cruise had never worked together prior to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, they are nonetheless true contemporaries, as Cruise and Morales were both born in New York in 1962, approximately three months apart.
Moreover, Cruise and Morales both had career breakthroughs in 1983, when Cruise, of course, found stardom in Risky Business, while Morales’ career was launched with his powerful dramatic performance in the coming-of-age crime drama film Bad Boys, which stars Sean Penn, Cruise’s co-star in Taps.
However, it’s at this point that the respective careers of Cruise and Morales diverged widely, and while Cruise obviously ascended to superstardom in the 1980s, stardom eluded Morales, who, over much of the past forty years, has consistently been denied the appreciation and success that his considerable talent clearly deserves, until now.

In the current blockbuster era, it's argued that the age of the movie star has died out. Obviously, big-name actors will never not be present, but in a period in which attaching "Marvel," "DC," or "Star Wars" to your project is the quickest way to a big box office, it feels like the time in which an actor or actress could open a film to over $50 million on their name alone has passed. One of the few remaining exceptions to this rule, of course, is Tom Cruise, who, against all odds, remains every bit as iconic as ever five decades into his career.
But Cruise is also the perfect example of a star who has had to change with the times. In fact, his career once ran the risk of becoming obsolete, like those of so many other stars of his era. Nonetheless, Cruise continues to successfully reinvent his image...

"Porsche. There is no substitute." Who can forget the famed automaker's plug in Tom Cruise's classic film Risky Business? The history behind the famed German automaker dates back to the 1930s, and these days, Porsche continues to make waves in Hollywood. Enter Paramount Pictures' Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, which is now available on home entertainment platforms. Millennials like myself will appreciate the new film's throwback '90s setting — and the classic cars that came with it, of course.
In celebration of the commercially successful film's release, the Transformers franchise recently took over Porsche's driving headquarters in Carson, California, where MovieWeb was on-hand to test-drive the kinds of sports cars featured in the latest entry. And for someone like myself, who's not exactly a "car guy," participating in an event like this can certainly help us better understand why vehicle fanatics obsess over the thrill behind driving a speedy Porsche.

In 1983, audiences watched Tom Cruise dance in his parents’ living room in Paul Brickman’s adolescent drama “Risky Business.” The film became a cultural touchstone — with Cruise’s dance often imitated but never duplicated — that has endured for 40 years. Cruise took that success and has now become the biggest, if not the last, global movie star. But when this author watches “Risky Business,” it’s the story of Lana, the teenage sex worker who propels Cruise’s Joel on his quest towards running a brothel, that sticks out.
Actress Rebecca De Mornay was in her early twenties when she made “Risky Business” and has never truly gotten her flowers for it. It’s even more frustrating to consider that the actress went on to star in hits in her own right, including the 1992 thriller “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle” and Disney’s 1993 adaptation of “The Three Musketeers.” De Mornay...

The following contains spoilers for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, in theaters now.
The trailers for the latest entry in the Mission: Impossible franchise have highlighted its action and adventure, but the movie has more to it than that. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One does everything fans of Tom Cruise's series expect, yet it's also a deceptively funny film. It has some genuinely big comedic turns and laugh-out-loud moments.
Many of them are set off by Cruise, who occasionally peels back the dramatic and serious layer to Ethan Hunt to play a befuddled and even overwhelmed agent trying his best to deal with the situations at hand. That keeps the film's largely unrelenting action from becoming overwhelming, and helps humanize the occasionally cold Ethan to audiences. More than anything, though, it serves as a good reminder that Cruise's extensive action experience comes with comedy chops...

In February, a clip went viral of Steven Spielberg telling Tom Cruise at an Oscars luncheon that he “saved Hollywood’s ass.” Spielberg was referring to the explosive success of Cruise’s return to the pilot seat in “Top Gun: Maverick.” Released in May 2022, the long-awaited sequel was the top earner at the domestic box office last year, raking in over $700 million in the United States. It was the shot in the arm that cinemas needed after the pandemic, and proof positive of Cruise’s enduring appeal as both a marquee movie star and skilled actor — two bona fides not always packaged together so successfully.
Cruise has been leveraging looks and charm, and flexing his blockbuster muscles, for decades. Going all the way back to the early 1980s, his appeal never seems to age, even at 61 years old. He’s skillfully shepherded original movies as a star and producer, never...

Tom Cruise is one of the biggest movie stars working today, and he holds an incredible box office that will likely never be beaten. The Mission: Impossible actor has been a bankable star for four decades, and almost every movie he has led in that time had a guaranteed audience. Ever since proving himself as a charismatic lead actor in 1983's Risky Business, he has gone from one success to another, whether it's working with Steven Spielberg on the biggest sci-fi movies in the world or becoming the face of the Mission: Impossible franchise.
Cruise's popularity still continues to rise, as he surprisingly had the biggest success of his career in 2022 when Top Gun: Maverick made almost $1.5 billion. The Top Gun sequel broke so many records and impressively grossed way more money than any Marvel Cinematic Universe release that year. Top Gun: Maverick was the second-highest-grossing movie of 2022, sitting...
