Exploring the enduring charm and evolving narrative of the Ghostbusters series, Dan Aykroyd has recently illuminated what he finds most captivating about the franchise’s latest rendition, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. As both an original cast member and an executive producer, Aykroyd’s insights are particularly poignant as the series strides into new territory while paying homage to its origins. The Evolving Legacy of Ghostbusters The reverence for legacy coupled with innovative storytelling is evident in Jason Reitman’s direction. The director positioned the return of the original cast as a pivotal moment. I was only gonna make this movie if we could get

JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way. For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and Psycho II.

Chris Hemsworth has been collecting science-fiction franchises like Infinity Stones. He started with his iconic role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, then made his way through franchises like Men in Black, Mad Max, Ghostbusters, and even Star Trek. The most recent addition to the seemingly ever-growing list was the Transformers series.
Transformers One
Voicing the beloved character of Optimus Prime, alongside Brian Tyree Henry, Scarlett Johansson, and Keegan-Michael Key, the cast of Transformers One is certainly full of well-known faces. However, as the trailer for the film just dropped, fans cannot help but feel disappointed.

Universal Orlando posted a short video to X today showing an old-style television with 90s-style graphics and music.
Now that’s something we haven’t seen in a while! pic.twitter.com/30Zuu97wzq

At the beginning of the video, a date listed as April 29, 2024, is shown at the top of the screen, seemingly indicating that an announcement will be coming on that date.
Throughout the static on the video, four images can be seen.
Shows the flux capacitor for “Back To The Future.”
Shows a dinosaur footprint from “Jurassic Park.”
Shows what looks like the shark from “Jaws.”
Shows a ghost that could be “Ghostbusters.”
Shows a bike with a basket like in “E.T.”

British-American filmmaker Gil Kenan, who has directed ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’, has said that the ‘Ghostbusters’ franchise changed his life as a kid with its unique blend of horror and comedy.
‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ sees the return of the Spengler family to the New York City firehouse where it all began. They join forces with the original Ghostbusters, who have established a top-secret research lab to take ghost-busting to new heights. Things go awry when their discovery of an ancient artefact unexpectedly unleashes an evil force, putting the world at risk of a second Ice Age.
Talking about the impact of the film on him as a child, Kenan said: “‘Ghostbusters’ changed my life as a kid – the unique blend of scares and comedy. I had never experienced anything like it in a movie theatre before. What really got me was the fun of it all, the joy on screen. It was that feeling,...

The influence of Keanu Reeves’ legacy film The Matrix is insurmountable in its degree – be it of relevance or pop culture identity. The film eschewed the generic tropes of action movies and added a blend of martial arts with high-scope science fiction to make something inherently unique. The product then created by the merger of Lilly and Lana Wachowski’s imagination continues to subvert audience expectations to date and essentially prove its worth in modern society.

The year was 1985 when Super Mario Bros. took the Nintendo Entertainment System by storm; Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes debuted in newspapers, and two unlikely friends named Marty McFly and Emmett Lathrop Brown piloted cinema’s most iconic time machine to a year when Panama hats and kitten heels were all the rage, 1955.
Fiercely protected at a level akin to Ghostbusters and Star Wars by millennials worldwide, Robert Zemeckis’s Back to the Future sits enthroned at Nostalgia Mountain’s top. The original film has spawned two sequels, a cartoon series, video game adaptations, a Broadway musical, and more. But how does it hold up by today’s standards? Strap on your seatbelt, and prepare yourselves to see some serious shit because this is Back to the Future Revisited.
In 1977, Robert Zemeckis did the unthinkable. He bulldozed into Amblin Entertainment without an appointment, heading straight for Steven Spielberg’s office.

April has been a slower month compared to March, but if nothing else, this weekend saw a popular indie studio break a few personal records with what might have been a controversial release. Read on for the weekend box office report.
A24 released Alex Garland‘s fourth feature as a director, “Civil War,” starring Oscar nominee Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Maura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Nick Offerman, and Jesse Plemons, into 3,838 theaters on Friday – the studio’s widest release ever. It came into the weekend with a reported production budget of $50 million – another record for the studio – and mostly decent reviews with 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, following a premiere at the SXSW Film and TV Festival.
It was able to make $2.9 million in Thursday and earlier previews, which were compiled into the movie’s $10.8 million opening day, and it then ended with an estimated $25.7 million to take first place on opening weekend.

When it comes to the most iconic leads to grace the silver screen, one can’t leave Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley out of the equation. While the Alien IP has witnessed several installments since its inception in ’79, the first two releases remain the franchise’s peak, often considered some of the most important contributors to the sci-fi landscape.
So it’s unsurprising to see why most hold one of the first two as one of their favorites from the iconic IP, and when Weaver was asked about her favorite one, she was quick to answer.
Aliens is Sigourney Weaver’s Favorite in the Franchise Aliens (1986)
From Ridley Scott delving into the more horror element with the first film, and James Cameron exploring more of its sci-fi aspect with the sequel, both films are considered great in their own right. But While Sigourney Weaver holds massive admiration for Scott, when...

The recipient of numerous accolades including two Golden Globes and a Grammy, Sigourney Weaver is undoubtedly one of the best actresses in Hollywood. She is well-known for her diverse filmography which comprises films like Alien and Working Girl; while the former is a sci-fi horror, the latter is a romantic comedy-drama.
Sigourney Weaver in a still from Alien
Weaver rose to fame with her performance as Ellen Ripley in Ridley Scott’s 1979 smash hit Alien. She reprised her role in the three sequels after the first movie’s success. It is hard to picture any other actress as Ellen in her place. It might be surprising for some that a different award-winning actress was considered for the role once.

Splashy and flashy (but not really trashy), Palm Royale on Apple TV+ fits easily into the ranks of high-gloss, high-concept, female-driven dramas that have enjoyed a Golden Age on premium streaming channels this past decade.
Recent series like Bad Sisters (also on Apple TV+) and Max's Big Little Lies drew a substantial audience with a combination of star-studded ensemble casts, heavy themes, and plots from best-selling domestic thrillers like those written by author Liane Moriarty.
Palm Royale ticks many of those boxes (it's based on the 2018 novel Mr. and Mrs. American Pie by Juliet McDaniel), but instead of sexual violence and trauma, it brings big laughs and a soapy jewel-box mystery to the female-centric limited series tablescape.
Palm Royale's opening credit sequence immediately places the series in time and taste by evoking Valley of The Dolls and James Bond with its graphic animation.

The mighty Titans – Godzilla and Kong – will likely lose their spot at the top of the box office heap this weekend, with Alex Garland’s Civil War aiming to replace it in the top spot. Alex Garland’s provocative and timely work of speculative fiction has got amazing buzz (check out my review here) and looks to become one of A24’s biggest openings ever. It seems like it’s on track to open with $20 million, which would be a solid opening for the $50 million movie. It’s the kind of film that could have solid legs at the box office, and it will get a nice boost by playing premium format IMAX screens.

In the current generation of consoles, some things that were almost a certainty change a lot, such as the price of Aaa games. The industry and major studios make the decision to increase prices from a 60- to 70-dollar standard.
According to the CEO of Saber Interactive, Matthew Karch, this could be a thing of the past for upcoming games as developers are looking to reduce costs and risk, making every title less expensive for players. Karch mentioned this in a recent interview, during which he also discussed the Embracer Group.

With titles like World War Z, Timeshift, Ghostbusters, and the upcoming Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2, Saber Interactive has made a pretty good reputation in the last couple of years.

With the Mickey Mouse and pre-Mickey Oswald the Lucky Rabbit characters now in the public domain, horror filmmakers are free to get their Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey on and turn the beloved animated icons into horror movie maniacs. Enter Oswald: Down the Rabbit Hole, an upcoming horror movie based on the character that was replaced by Mickey.

Hudson will be playing Oswald Jebediah Coleman, a brilliant animator who is cast away to a bone-chilling magical prison. After over 100 years of being trapped there, Oswald’s come-to-life cartoon rabbit is menacing, gruesome and out for blood.

Without Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, would the Marvel Cinematic Universe have become such a global phenomenon? As the charismatic actor played a big part (perhaps the biggest) in the success of Iron Man, it’s easy to imagine the film crashing the entire franchise before it even began had another actor starred in it. While Downey Jr. bid farewell to the Marvel franchise with Avengers: Endgame, could he ever be persuaded to return as Iron Man?
“Happily. It’s too integral a part of my DNA,” Robert Downey Jr. told Esquire. “That role chose me. And look, I always say, Never, ever bet against Kevin Feige. It is a losing bet. He’s the house. He will always win.“

When you're working for the Ghostbusters, you never know when you're going to get the call to track down a non-terminal repeating phantasm or a Class-5 full-roaming vapor. It could be just as you're sitting down to a nice takeout dinner, or in the middle of the night while you're dreaming about a strangely sexual ghost encounter. Either way, you're gonna want to make sure you have the energy to bust ghosts. Thankfully, the folks at Pop Culture Coffee have you covered, especially if you're a "Ghostbusters" fan.
Right now, Pop Culture Coffee has two coffee flavors inspired by "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" (read our review). First, there's the Ecto-Espresso, which has a chocolate caramel flavor, and is available in both ground coffee and cold brew cans. But that's not all, because taking a cue from those mischievous and twisted little Mini-Pufts, there's also a Puftmello flavor that comes with a taste of marshmallow.

But that's not all, because taking a cue from those mischievous and twisted little Mini-Pufts, there's also a Puftmello flavor that comes with a taste of marshmallow.

Will pink and black loom large this week in Las Vegas?
After all, this Monday kicks off CinemaCon, the annual exhibition industry trade show and weeklong opportunity for studios and theater operators to wax poetic about the magic of going to the movies. And in 2023, there was no greater manifestation of the claim that the movie business is back than the cultural craze of “Barbenheimer.” The inextricably linked “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” complete with double features of the cotton-candy-coated and ultra-dark blockbusters, dominated the zeitgeist for months on end.
But just as the past can serve as a reminder of the collective joy of moviegoing, last year’s events may also plague the industry. Another inevitable topic at CinemaCon will be the two labor strikes that shut down production for months and forced studios to delay several tentpoles to 2025. The box office was just starting to recapture its pre-pandemic stride, so...

April began with showers, plus a tiny regional earthquake on the East Coast, but that didn’t keep anyone away from theaters, even if it was a slower weekend than much of March. Read on for the weekend box office report.
There was little surprise that Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” would win its second weekend at #1. Despite dropping 60% from its fantastic opening weekend, it still was able to take first place with an estimated $31.7 million to bring its total to $135 million after crossing the $100 million mark in its first week. It also passed the $361 million mark globally, with another $59.3 million grossed overseas this weekend.
The weekend offered two new wide releases in Dev Patel‘s directorial debut, the action-thriller “Monkey Man,” and 20th Century’s horror prequel “The First Omen,” the former released into 3,029 theaters vs. “The First Omen’s” 3,375 theaters. “Monkey Man” came into the...

Garraka, the creepy demon in “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” who gives New York a “Death Chill,” was animated by Sony Pictures Imageworks with an eye toward Ray Harryhausen’s legendary stop-motion creatures from “Jason and the Argonauts.” In fact, the team paid particular attention to the skeleton army and Medusa for performance reference. That’s because director Gil Kenan (“Monster House”), who voiced Garraka, wanted to combine puppetry, stop motion, animatronics, and CG to evoke the handcrafted charm of the original “Ghostbusters” from 1984.
In this sequel to “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” the once powerful Garraka, who’s imprisoned in a brass orb by ancient Fire Masters, is inadvertently set free by the Ghostbusters and unleashed on New York. His “Death Chill” breath can freeze his victims and cause them to shatter like tiny crystals. What’s more, Garraka can deep freeze the entire planet, and his plan is to take over by resurrecting an army of the undead.

You’ve got questions and Emily Alyn Lind has answers.
In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, when Mckenna Grace’s Phoebe Spengler was sidelined by the Ghostbusters’ longtime bureaucratic nemesis, Walter Peck (William Atherton), the young Ghostbusting hero went on an unexpected journey that quickly introduced her to Lind’s surprise character, Melody.
Melody was nowhere to be found in the marketing for the film, but as soon as she’s introduced opposite Phoebe during a park-based chess match, it becomes clear why director Gil Kenan and Sony played their cards close to their vest. Melody is not only a ghost in the form of a 16-year-old girl, but she also interacts with Phoebe on a very human and relatable level. In other words, she’s a far cry from the typical apparitions that the franchise has offered up, and she further expands on how Ghost Egon was utilized in Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021).

A case can be made that Drew Goddard is one of the more underappreciated genre voices to break through in the last 20 years. The filmmaker has had an impressive track record, from writing and directing a bonafide cult classic like Cabin in the Woods to also penning one of the best sci-fi movies of this century, 2015’s The Martian, which was adapted from the Andy Weir novel of the same name and earned Goddard an Oscar nomination. He also wrote the original Cloverfield and helmed the extremely overlooked Bad Times at the El Royale. In nerd circles, his name should be revered.
Even with that esteem though, we cannot ignore that a vast shadow of trepidation descended Wednesday afternoon when the news hit: Goddard has been tapped to write and direct what will be a fifth and currently untitled Matrix film—a first for a series which up until now...

Normally, this streaming service only carries its own original TV shows and films, but Mac Rumors reports that during the month of April it will offer 29 licensed movies for a limited time. The 1980s was truly a golden era for Gooey Cinema (trademark pending). It wasn't just hard-r horror pictures like David Cronenberg's "The Fly" or Chuck Russell's "The Blob"; from the sheer variety of slimes in the original "Ghostbusters" and "Ghostbusters II" to Marty (Martin Casella) hallucinating peeling bloody wads of skin off his face in "Poltergeist", filmmakers were always finding excuses to cover the screen -- and their actors -- with ooze or invent horrifying creatures they could blow up into chunks of gunk à la the "Gremlins" microwave scene.
So, naturally, when the Duffer Brothers got the green light for their '80s sci-fi horror pastiche "Stranger Things," the pair were eager to create all manner of goo-coated monstrosities like the ones they loved growing up. There was just one problem: As one of the show's visual effects supervisors, Martin Pelletier, explained to Vulture in 2019, covering your...

Easter continues its tradition as a great holiday weekend for a big studio movie release, proven by the sequel “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” which far exceeded all expectations. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Almost three years after Warner Bros. released director Adam Wingard‘s “Godzilla vs. Kong” at the height of the pandemic with a simultaneous HBO Max streaming release, the franchise was able to return to traditional theatrical by releasing “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” into 3,861 theaters on Friday. Starring Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry and Kaylee Hottle from the previous movie, joined by Dan Stevens, Wingard’s sequel received mixed-to-negative reviews, but after making $10 million in Thursday previews “Godzilla x Kong” brought in $37 million on Good Friday, which is just slightly less than the $38.4 million opening day for “Godzilla” back in 2014.
Business kept up through the weekend for $80 million estimated from Warner Bros.

“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” stomped to the top of box office charts, collecting a better-than-expected $80 million from 3,861 North American theaters in its debut.
Heading into the weekend, the monster mashup was projected to earn $50 million to $55 million to start. But “Godzilla x Kong,” which sees the two otherworldly beasts team up to save the planet, trounced those projections after benefitting from several factors, including premium large formats (accounting for 48% of ticket sales) and audience enthusiasm (it landed an “A-” CinemaScore”). Critics were less impressed by “The New Empire,” starring Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry and Dan Stevens and directed by Adam Wingard (“Godzilla vs. Kong”). It holds a 55% “rotten” average on Rotten Tomatoes.
It’s the second-biggest debut for Warner Bros. and Legendary’s MonsterVerse, following 2014’s “Godzilla” ($93 million) but ahead of 2017’s “Kong: Skull Island” ($61 million), 2019’s “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” ($47.7 million) and 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong...

Enemies-turned-frenemies proved to be just what the Easter weekend box office needed.
Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire opened to a monstrous $80 million at the domestic box office, well ahead of an expected $45 million to $55 million. The tentpole scored the second-best opening in the MonsterVerse Universe, no small feat for a fifth film in a franchise. It also delivered the fifth biggest Easter opening of all time, according to Sunday estimates.
Globally, the film stomped to a $194 million launch after taking in $114 million overseas from 64 markets — including an impressive $44 million in China, where Legendary East is handling the movie. These days, many Hollywood event pics don’t come close to doing that level of business in China (on Monday, it will pass up the $46.5 million earned by Dune: Part II to rank as the top-grossing Hollywood title of 2024). Godzilla x Kong opened to $12.8 million in Mexico,...

I’ll start with an important disclaimer for all readers since the following hot take will inevitably trigger strong reactions. As someone from a small European country and born in 1994, Ghostbusters (1984) was never a defining classic of my childhood or adolescence, so I don’t feel the nostalgia that many others have for the original film, although I do enjoy it. That said, I (re)watched it, along with Ghostbusters II and Ghostbusters: Afterlife this week in preparation for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, and – here it comes – I consider the 2021 sequel my favorite movie in the famous franchise. In fact, comparing it directly with the original – here it comes again – beyond the inevitable audiovisual improvements, I find Afterlife to have better humor, characters, and cast.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire hopes to leave a big footprint when marching into theaters around the globe this weekend after starting off with a record $10 million in Thursday previews, the best showing ever for Warner Bros. and Legendary’s MonsterVerse library, as well as the best preview of the year to date.
Warners is estimating a domestic weekend opening in the $45 million to $50 million range over the Easter frame, while at least one major tracking service is counting on $50 million to $55 million. Based on the preview turnout, New Empire could climb notably higher, unless it is front-loaded.
Overseas, New Empire is looking at an $80 million debut, which would put its global launch in the $135 million range.
The previews figure tops prior entries in the Godzilla MonsterVerse, with Godzilla (2014) opening to $9.3 million in previews, Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) bowing to $6.3 million in previews and Kong: Skull Island (2017) nabbing $3.7 million.
