In anticipation, the gang finds themselves in a rather hairy situation as they howl at the moon and share their favorite werewolf movies. Like their list of favorite vamps ahead of their Dracula episode, this list is as definitive as their voice in the Horror industry.

What do you get when you mix Nora Ephron with Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Michael Myers? The combination might seem antithetical, but it works scarily well in director Josh Ruben‘s sweet, funny, terrifying rom-com/slasher movie mash-up, “Heart Eyes.”
Working from an inventive script by Phillip Murphy, Christopher Landon, and Michael Kennedy, Ruben somehow deftly satisfies fans of both “Sleepless in Seattle” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” An iconic new horror villain is born in the form of the movie’s Heart Eyes Killer, a slasher who stalks young lovers each Valentine’s Day.
Ruben, as he explained to IndieWire, wanted the movie’s two sides to be equally strong so that the horror would deepen the romance made all the more terrifying because of our investment in the two young lovers (Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding) fleeing from the Heart Eyes Killer. In studying films of both genres,...

A run of successful horror remakes abruptly ended in 2010, which spelled trouble for Platinum Dunes. Producer Brad Fuller explains what happened next.
For almost a decade, Platinum Dunes was one of the most successful independent production companies in Hollywood. Beginning with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in 2003, which made over $100 million on a sub-$10m budget, the studio seemed to have hit on a magical formula: make genre movies to a price, attached to classic horror titles.
Texas Chainsaw was therefore followed by a string of other remakes, all based on films from the 70s and 80s: 2005’s The Amityville Horror was followed by The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning in 2006; The Hitcher, Friday The 13th and A Nightmare On Elm Street were all released between 2007 and 2009.
In the financial crisis era, audiences, it seemed, loved gory escapism. But in 2010, something strange happened: Platinum Dunes co-founder Brad Fuller noticed that his phone had stopped ringing.

He may be plotting another Alien film, but Fede Álvarez is hoping to make a classic slasher movie too. More on his comments below.
Director Fede Álvarez is currently doing the awards rounds in Hollywood with Alien: Romulus, the successful new entry into the decades old sci-fi horror franchise. Another instalment has already been confirmed and Álvarez has previously teased where it might go.
Talking to Collider at the Saturn Awards, Álvarez confessed there’s something else that is tickling his fancy when it comes to making more horror films.
“On the horror side I would love to do a good old slasher. I haven’t done that really. I mean I have possession movies with Evil Dead, sci-fi horror. A kind of classic slasher,” the director said.
As with Alien: Romulus, Evil Dead, Álvarez’s 2013 reboot/sequel to Sam Raimi’s classic 1981 feature saw the filmmaker dip his toes...

“There it is,” says Computer Conor, finding the advert for his modest computer-art service in the latest issue of Personal Computing while his dog, Sandy, snuffles on the sofa. Though the aesthetic of Obex — Albert Birney’s follow-up to the pastel-hued Strawberry Mansion (2021) — is grainy ’70s Eraserhead monochrome, appearances can be deceiving. The year is 1987, with Reagan in the White House and Madonna in the charts, but Conor (played by Birney himself) is unaware. A virtual shut-in, he sees life through a screen, even sending his neighbor Mary to do his grocery shopping.
Flipping through the magazine, an advert for a new computer game catches his eye; illustrated with a gothic castle, a satanic goat’s head and human brain, it promises a breakthrough in interactive gaming: “Can you make it to the end of the maze and defeat the demon Ixaroth before he eats your mortal soul?” To take part,...

Although the genre has been booming within the past decade, “elevated horror” has failed to craft any memorable slasher icons that could feasibly stand alongside Michael Myers of “Halloween,” Freddie Krueger of “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” or Leatherface of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” That’s not to say that there have not been successful horror franchises, as sagas like “Insidious” and “The Conjuring” have been successful in retaining their quality. It’s perhaps the drive for more seriously minded horror films in the vein of “Get Out” or “Hereditary” that has made the slasher subgenre feel less relevant; there’s only so much social satire that can be pulled off in a story about a masked serial killer mowing down innocent people.

A scene late in Albert Birney’s Obex cuts tenderly to the heart of our growing nostalgia for analog forms of technology. Conor (Birney), an awkward man in his 30s, is having a fireside chat with Victor (Frank Moseley), who’s quite literally a bulky 1980s-era television set with a human body. Victor says that Conor looks familiar, and then the context hits him: He was the family TV in Conor’s childhood home, purchased by Conor’s father. While the family watched Victor, he also watched over them. Conor, who lost his father as a child, is reassured by Victor, who says that the dead man loved his son very much.
This moment is staged by Birney in the same tone as many of Obex’s most moving scenes: with a wry absurdity that at once parodies and honors Conor’s tunnel vision. Victor is an artifact of Conor’s past,...

Post Malone, the Grammy-nominated singer, has teamed up with Vault Comics for an exciting new project—a horror graphic novel called ‘Big Rig,’ described as a thrilling mix of ‘Evil Dead’ and ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ set in medieval Europe.

In 2025, the Halloweenies are celebrating the storied legacy of the Universal Monsters. Dracula, Wolf Man, Frankenstein, his Bride, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Invisible Man… all will be covered. In fact, each monster is getting their own month, giving the Halloweenies plenty of time to dig deep into their respective origins and chart their influence over the past century and some change.
This month sees the gang in Transylvania, where they’ve already shared their favorite vampire films, reviewed Robert Eggers‘ reimagining of Nosferatu, and talked all over Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino‘s From Dusk til Dawn. Today is the main event, though, as the Halloweenies offer their signature historical analysis to Tod Browning‘s 1931 Dracula.
Topics include: Browning’s strange and wonderful career, the U.S. in early 30’s (spoiler: not great!), vampire history and lore, early days of Universal and talkies, the 21-year-old nepo baby founder of the Universal Monsters,...

Lily-Rose Depp’s Oscar snub for her brilliant performance in Nosferatu has enraged some fans. However, these fans seem to forget that her father Johnny Depp waited for two decades before he could get his first Academy nomination. Depp’s first of three nominations came in 2004 for his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the first Pirates of the Caribbean film.

Considering how many different places Hollywood makes movies about, they sure don’t like to leave home very often. Movie filming locations are, like, 80 percent L.A., 15 percent Toronto and a handful of European castles. That means it’s inevitable that locations will get reused, even in wildly different movies.

While the likes of David Cronenberg’s Videodrome and Steven Lisberger’s Tron have examined the thrills and fears of humanity’s relationship with screens since the early ‘80s, there’s been a recent, renewed interest as the number of screens in one’s life has ever-expanded. At last year’s Sundance Film Festival, Jane Schoebruen explored identity-forming bonds with media and the eventual curdling nostalgia with I Saw the TV Glow. This year, Obex finds Albert Birney following Strawberry Mansion with another inventive and lo-fi adventure, but one that finds the director honing in with a more satisfying focus. Even though our main character spends every waking moment in front of a screen, this is no damning screed but an earnest, even poignant look at how entertainment can provide a sense of comfort for the most lonely souls.

The most recent entry in the so-called Poohniverse, and the first one not to feature Pooh, Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, has arrived. With Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey and its sequel both being steaming piles of, well, poo, I was going to skip this. But surprisingly, I started hearing quite a few positive things about it.
While most of the films that director Scott Chambers, aka Scott Jeffrey has been involved with are borderline unwatchable fare like Dragon Fury, he does have the occasional entertaining effort like The Gardener to his credit, so it wasn’t entirely beyond the realm of possibility that Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare would actually be decent. Hoping for the best, I decided to give it a chance.

The Dcu’s horror-inspired movie Swamp Thing is in its early stages of development at DC Studios. Created in 1971 for DC Comics’ House of Secrets #92, the human-turned-monster Swamp Thing has become a staple of DC’s horror-inspired gallery of characters. There are various human characters who have transformed into Swamp Thing - all connected to the elemental force called “the Green” - but the most famous one is the scientist Alex Holland, who quite literally becomes one with nature when he submerges himself in the Louisiana swamplands after an explosion left him on the brink of death.
Despite not being as famous as most DC characters who have starred in movies and TV shows, Swamp Thing has already been played by various live-action actors, starting with 1982's Swamp Thing, directed by A Nightmare on Elm Street director Wes Craven. A couple years ago, Spider One – the frontman of Powerman 5000 and the brother of fellow musician/filmmaker Rob Zombie – made his feature directorial debut with the horror anthology Allegoria. Last year, his second feature – a horror film called Bury the Bride – was released through the Tubi streaming service. His third film, which is called Little Bites, recently secured a worldwide distribution deal through Rlje Films and the Shudder streaming service – and, having received a theatrical and VOD release in October, Little Bites is now set to start streaming on Shudder as of February 21st!
Written and directed by Spider One, Little Bites centers on Mindy, a young widow and mother who tries to protect her daughter Alice from a flesh eating monster named Agyar. Mindy has been secretly sacrificing her own life by allowing the creature to feast on her body as she keeps Alice hidden away at her grandmother’s house.

A surprisingly strong contender for the most lethal horror movie monster has a shockingly high kill count. Thanks to their enduring nature and lethal tactics, many of the horror genre's most famous villains have earned dozens of kills over the course of their respective series. Characters like Michael Meyers keep pushing the limits of the past, with the kill counts in films like Halloween Kills pushing the characters to new horrifying heights.
The long-running nature and supernatural qualities of some of these characters explain how they're able to amass such high body counts. The most iconic villains in the genre have amassed plenty of kills in various horror films, reboots, and remakes, with franchises like Halloween or Friday the 13th amassing plenty across decades. However, there's a surprisingly strong contender for the highest kill-count in the genre, even when limited to on-screen kills and ignoring the original franchise that inspired it.

These “Retro” masks are made of hard plastic that can be placed over the front of the face, while the regular “Vault Boy/Girl” masks will be vinyl whole-head masks.
Take a look below…
These are just a couple products that Trick or Treat Studios has given us sneak preview first looks at here on Bloody Disgusting, and you’ll find much, much more where they came from by following...

“The Cell” is back in action.
Tarsem Singh’s somewhat controversial 2000 thriller is getting the 4K treatment thanks to a new, limited edition release from Arrow Video.
“The Cell” stars Jennifer Lopez as a psychologist working with some cutting-edge technology, who is tasked by the FBI to go inside the mind of a serial killer (Vincent D’Onofrio) who has fallen into a coma. While there, she has to battle the demons of his subconscious, along with an FBI agent (Vince Vaughn). Watch a clip from the new restoration below, with Lopez’s character communicating with the ghostly version of the killer’s dog – an all-white German shepherd.
When the movie was released in 2000, it was somewhat controversial, with some claiming that Singh’s imagery, which borrowed from Damien Hirst and H.R. Giger, to name a few, and was honed during Singh’s time making influential commercials and music videos (like...

Yet another adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera is in development for Disney+, and the project may now be honing in on its female lead.
According to scooper Mttsh, Rachel Zegler is being eyed to play Christine, the object of the titular Opera Ghost's obsession. Whether this means she's actually in talks for the role or simply someone the studio is interested in is not clear.
Titled Phantom, this YA take on the classic novel by Gaston Leroux will be directed and executive produced by Kenny Ortega, who has led two major Disney franchises with High School Musical and The Descendants.
It doesn't sound like Ortega's version will be changing up the basic premise, with the story focusing on Erik, "a mysterious, disfigured musical genius who lives beneath the Paris Opera House. He becomes obsessed with a young soprano, Christine, and manipulates events to make her the star of the opera.

I mention a lot in these video essays about remakes and how they sometimes work but often times don’t. One of the biggest issues I have is that many of the remakes we get are really not needed. I like them but did we really need an updated version of Friday the 13th, Halloween, or Texas Chainsaw Massacre? Of course not, these are classics for a reason. Those are just the ones that work too, there’s plenty like Jacob’s Ladder, Nightmare on Elm Street, or Poltergeist that run the gamut from boring as hell to offensively bad. Well, in 2024 I’m kind of getting my wish. While something like Fade to Black could get a wonderful update 44 years later and be able to say something new and different, I’m curious what a Street Trash remake will bring to the table. The original is one that was a...

The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise could lure back Patricia Arquette, if producers are willing to meet one particular condition. The future Oscar-winner became a 1980s scream queen with her starring role as Kristen in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. Having survived her battle with Freddy Krueger, thanks in part to her special dream-gymnastics skill, anointed Final Girl Arquette exited the franchise. Her recast character was eventually killed in A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master.
Almost 40 years after taking her turn in the biggest of all ‘80s slasher franchises, Arquette says she would consider returning to Elm Street, but joked that she’ll only do it if producers take away Kristen’s gymnastic ability and give the character a new superpower (via ComicBook.com):
“Ya know, I just, I never really thought that in my dreams I’d be a gymnast so I don’t know.

The A Nightmare On Elm Street franchise has seen various characters come and go, among them Kristen Parker, played by Patricia Arquette, and she’s right about one specific thing about her. Back in 1984, Wes Craven terrorized the audience with a one-of-a-kind slasher villain in A Nightmare On Elm Street. The movie introduces Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), a child killer burned alive by the parents of his victims. However, that isn’t enough to stop him, and he returns to terrorize the children of his murderers where their parents won’t ever be able to defend them: their dreams.
However, if Krueger kills them in their dreams, they die too. One of his targets, Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp), goes to lengths to defeat him, but it’s not enough. The success of A Nightmare On Elm Street made way for a franchise with a total of nine movies (including a...

Johnny Depp Missed Ferris Role (Photo Credit – Instagram/Facebook)
Hold up, imagine Johnny Depp as Ferris Bueller. Crazy, right? That almost happened before Matthew Broderick took up the role. Back in the ‘80s, Depp was chosen for Ferris in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The catch? A packed schedule forced him to turn it down. And just like that, Broderick became the charming troublemaker we know and love.
As Depp himself admitted on Inside the Actors Studio, “I was offered the part as Ferris, but couldn’t accept due to scheduling conflicts.” He wasn’t salty about it, though. In fact, he was all about giving props to Broderick.
Now, let’s hit rewind. Johnny Depp was still climbing the Hollywood ladder in A Nightmare on Elm Street days. Imagine him as Ferris Bueller—would Ferris have traded charm for a brooding edge? We’ll never know, but Matthew Broderick turned Ferris into the scheming,...

Lily-Rose Depp is clearly making a mark outside of her father Johnny’s legacy. But that doesn’t mean she wasn’t given the chance to watch some of his movies as a young girl. In fact, one traumatized her to the point that she hasn’t forgotten the experience more than two decades later…and we’re not talking about A Nightmare on Elm Street.
Speaking with Harper’s Bazaar, Lily-Rose remembered being sat down to watch Johnny Depp’s 1990 film Edward Scissorhands when she was just three. One scene in particular — near the end where Edward is run back to his decrepit mansion by the citizens that grew to love him and his barbershop skills — was the one that she carried with her. “I was traumatised by it. Not because I thought he was scary, but because everyone was being so mean to him and I got really upset.

A popular trend in the movie world in recent years is major studios remaking their fan-favorite films from decades before. Although the idea has been popularized by Disney with their live-action remakes of their classic animated features, the trend extends far beyond the one company. Throughout Hollywood, filmmakers are aiming to capitalize on the pre-existing fan bases of their original movies. Oftentimes, putting a modern spin on a beloved classic seems like a surefire way to make a hefty profit.
However, a handful of attempts have proven that success is not a guarantee. Many recent remakes, particularly of films from the 1980s, have ended up massively underwhelming their audiences. Viewers flock to theaters hoping to see an exciting new twist on their favorite stories, but sadly discover that they are merely being given something boring, unoriginal, or otherwise disappointing. Although the films that inspired them may have been quite successful,...

Although few theatrical franchises receive animated TV spinoffs like Back to the Future, Beetlejuice, and Ghostbusters did, this '80s trend predicted major change in 2020s Hollywood. While the blockbuster may have been born in the ‘70s with hits like Jaws, Star Wars, and Alien, the ‘80s was where the movie franchise truly flourished. The aforementioned hits all received sequels that expanded their fictional worlds and earned staggering sums at the box office, but the decade was also home to a slew of huge franchises that continue to this day. These include the Ghostbusters movies, the Gremlins series, and the Back to the Future franchise.

Nosferatu director Robert Eggers explains why horror deserves more respect. The new gothic horror movie follows the eerie journey of Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård), the sinister vampire who first appeared in F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent film. As the Count preys upon the residents of a remote seaside village, the haunted Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp) and her husband, Thomas (Nicholas Hoult), are drawn closer into the shadows of their imminent doom. Produced by Focus Features, Nosferatu has been a hit since it released on Christmas Day.
In an interview with SlashFilm, Eggers points out a widespread antipathy to genre films, particularly horror. As a filmmaker who has dedicated much of his career to exploring the darker corners of human nature through the occult, gore, and folklore, Eggers has witnessed firsthand how horror films are often dismissed by critics and moviegoers alike. Here's what the director had to say:

While a video game based on A Nightmare on Elm Street probably wouldn’t focus on things like night terrors or sleep paralysis, Hitori De Productions’ upcoming Dream Cage is launching head-first into the concept. Currently in development for PC via Steam, Dream Cage focuses on the horrifying concept of something that’s all too real for many, while also bringing to life the terror these individuals feel.
Dream Cage centres on Robert a 50-year-old man who has struggled with memory issues and insomnia for many years. Compounding his issues are his addiction to medication, and hallucinations that increasingly blur the line with reality. But are they truly hallucinations, or is there something else lurking beneath the surface?

Olivia Hussey, who left an indelible mark on cinema and television through diverse works ranging from Romeo and Juliet to Black Christmas to Jesus of Nazareth has passed away. She was 73.

This article contains mild spoilers for "Nosferatu."
There is much within Robert Eggers' film "Nosferatu" that is to be expected. If you're familiar with the prior cinematic incarnations of Dracula, vampire movies in general, Eggers' filmography, or some combination of all three, then you're not necessarily going to be surprised by everything in the film. There's a lot of bloodletting, a palpable sense of dread, an authenticity of time and place, and a psychosexual relationship between the vampire Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård) and his victims — all aspects that foreknowledge of vampire movies and Eggers' work should prepare you for.
However, part of the joy that comes with following the work of a true auteur is seeing how much they can still surprise you, even as they remain true to their quirks and proclivities. "Nosferatu" is as undeniably Eggers' film as it is a quintessential vampire movie, and yet it's honestly...

Remakes are pretty common in the horror genre, but not necessarily popular and not always good. Studios that own classic intellectual properties like "A Nightmare on Elm Street" or "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" obviously want to monetize them, but longtime fans have a hard time getting past anyone besides Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger or Gunnar Hansen as Leatherface. It's a problem at least as old as Universal's classics -- Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff were not the only actors to play Dracula and Frankenstein's monster, respectively, but they are the names and faces that everyone remembers and loves from the Universal Monsters movies.
So why remake the hits? Why not remake flops instead? Sure, some of those flops may have intense fan bases, but imagine how many more people would love them if the concept were done better the second time around? A clever notion that...

The A Nightmare on Elm Street movie franchise didn't delve into Freddy Krueger as deeply as some audiences would think. From the beginning, the movies have been transparent about Freddy's background as a child killer and even how he was killed. Later movies - namely Dream Warriors and Freddy's Dead - added more depth to Freddy's twisted origin story, revealing his upbringing.
However, a forgotten Marvel comic - Freddy Krueger's A Nightmare on Elm Street #1 by Steve Gerber, Rich Buckler, Tony DeZuniga, Alfredo Alcala, and Janice Chiang - delves deeper into the origin story of one Frederick Charles Krueger. The brief two-issue comic series finds a way to reveal new details about Freddy Krueger that the movies themselves never explored.
Granted, there are minor tweaks in this comic origin update that alter what audiences learn in the movies. Still, the new details are significant additions to the franchise, especially those...

The third film in a horror franchise often carries the weight of high expectations and franchise fatigue. However, some horror “threequels” break the mold, delivering scares, thrills, and fresh twists. Here are ten of the best horror movie threequels that deserve your attention.
1. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)
Director: Chuck Russell
This third instalment reinvigorates Freddy Krueger with a mix of dark humour, creative dream sequences, and a cast of characters who fight back. It’s a fan favourite for good reason.
2. Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)
Director: Tommy Lee Wallace
Although it departs from Michael Myers entirely, this standalone entry is a cult classic in its own right. Its eerie plot about a sinister mask company and haunting jingle makes it a unique entry in the Halloween franchise.
3. The Exorcist III (1990)
Director: William Peter Blatty
Returning to the chilling tone of the original, this sequel...

Johnny Depp has been one of the biggest working movie stars since the '90s, and possibly even the '80s if his smaller roles are to be considered, and yet the actor's net worth in 2024 is a lot lower than it's ever been in his career. Johnny Depp's professional career began in 1984 when he appeared in a little horror film titled, Nightmare on Elm Street. While many now-famous actors have started in horror, Depp's performance was particularly notable and the longevity of the franchise means his debut is lauded rather than teased at.
From there, Depp went on to star in the hit cop drama series, 21 Jump Street, which led into bigger roles. Johnny Depp's movie and TV career has since grown to include Oscar-worthy performances, tent-pole franchises, and everything in between. In recent years, Depp has been at the center of a notable amount of controversy, particularly...

Sometimes books are mega hits and get turned into movies that take off. There’s just something that captures the zeitgeist and it’s destined to be. Harry Potter came out of nowhere and then turned into a franchise of books, video games, Lego sets, and of course movies. Other times, authors release something that will undoubtedly get picked up as the track record for success is already there. This is the Stephen King special or even Michael Crichton when he was still active. Adaptations can come from cases of re-adaptations like Dracula, Frankenstein, and other classics that get recycled over and over again, especially of they fall into the public domain. There’s the rare case, though, that an unknown author has a manuscript pop and movie studios jump at the chance to create something new. The journey and strange tale of the author of Bird Box falls under that last category.
