Slowly sinking into the mire

I watch this because my partner is a lifelong fan. It's OK at times - perfect entertainment for a TV dinner - but the quality of the writing changes too often. Currently, it seems as if the scriptwriters are fourteen year old year girls heavily into chick-lit.

Neighbours
WMedits15 January 2015
good show! They have good story lines and the actors are great. I don't know how they record. At least this comedy goes well beyond the bunch of creative revenge ploys that these next-door nemeses wreak on each other. Neighbors isn't straight-As, bring-down-the-house smart-funny, but it's no drop-out, sprawling, lame block party of a flick either. It's Byrne who's Rogen's partner in crime, and she's the brains behind the operation ... a refreshing change of pace in a genre that usually relegates ladies to the nag role. The good news is that with Neighbors, you get the movie you're promised, and it's funny; the better news is that Neighbors is also so much smarter than that ; its high points far outshine the low ones,

Better than Home and Away.
ratzcatcher30 November 2005
When in comes to Australian television series, Neighbours is a legend. From what began as humble beginnings way back in early 1985 this program has survived the test of time. Originally broadcast on Channel Seven the show was axed after just five months and was sold to Ten in 1986. The rest is history. This program has launched the careers of many Australians most notably, Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Guy Pearce, Natalie Imbruglia, Holly Vallance and Delta Goodrem. Whilst not as popular as its hey day in the late 1980's and somewhat unrecognisable from 1985, Neighbours continues to deliver strong story lines and keeps on keeping on. Heres to another 20 years.

Reality?
iangeofk14 April 2017
I would be sorry to see this pantomime disappear as it's pure fantasy! A high school principal and teachers who are never there, a business now run by a pregnant university student who has never been there or done any studying and a schoolgirl, the office of mayor which can be filled by anyone. But they are almost believable compared to Father Jack! The producers' ignorance about the Catholic church and priesthood is beyond amazing, it is utterly ludicrous. Jack behaves like a self employed social worker and now the Good Friday "interfaith service" is just too much.

How the mighty have fallen...
llewellynf19748 August 2019
I watched Neighbours religiously, everyday after coming home from school, 535 pm - 635 pm on BBC1 from 1988 - 2000. The storylines and the characters were amazing and you could relate to them.

Due to various reasons, I didn't have the time to watch TV as much and earlier this year whilst visiting my parents, I caught an episode which Mum was watching. My Good God...what a load horse crap!! Yes, the acting was wooden back when I watched it but now - it looks so fake and the actors/actresses look like they pulled out of the unemployment queue and stuck in front of the camera. As usual, like most things on TV now - the curse of Political Correctness has struck - but I'm not going to waste time on this.

The only character on this once decent show who had any talent was Bouncer, that lovely golden Labrador! As another reviewer said, it's time this show was put out to pasture and the cast either pensioned off or humanely euthanised!!!

Dissappointing Fall From Grace
philhayes8029 August 2018
Up until 2011 the show had some fantastic storylines, but now rely on shock value more then ever and some storylines that would never happen in real life. The older cast of the show look so tired of the show and its insane shooting schedule but remains popular in England for god knows why. The show is trying to hard to be relevant and is only still popular in Australia through the use of social media. The show lost a lot of its original cast (including Carla Bonner in May) and will continue to lose the good ones until no one wants to watch the show anymore.. oh never mind only 100k tune in every night. that's already saying something.

If Neighbours was a food it would be a cyanide laced sewerage pie
gir-2419 July 2008
Boring one dimension characters, pathetic writing, recycled predicable story lines, I'm trying to figure out how a show this bad can stay on the air for so long, the only explanation I can come up with is UK audiences must love it, they are tad more retarded than Australian audiences so this would be a reasonable conclusion as nobody I know that I've spoken to here watches it.

People must think I'm exaggerating when I say this show is bad, I'm not, I myself didn't realise how bad it was until I was watching TV one afternoon, I didn't know what it was I was watching but I said to myself: "Man this show is even worse than Neighbours!" When the ad break finished I was somewhat bemused to find out that it actually was Neighbours, it was a repeat of an earlier episode.

Acting is terrible, but I'm not sure if it's due the actors themselves or the abysmal writing so I'm really not certain if I should feel sorry for them or be disgusted by them, though I have to say some of them look truly embarrassed to be there.

As I said the story lines are nothing but recycled predicable crap, you know the drill, boy meets girl, boy and girl flirt ad nauseam, boy kisses girl, girl fights with boy, girl breaks up with boy, rinse wash repeat, honestly the writers of this show should be blasted from a cannon into the sun… there's nothing original here.

OK so how to rate something as bad a s Neighbours, well I rated it one, only because you can't rate it any lower, I really wanted to rate it -1 for every year it's been on air, 20+ years of nothing but crap… I can't wait for this show to be axed just knowing it exists disturbs me on so many levels, I find it odd that some people say this show used to be good, it was never good!

Everybody Needs Good Neighbours
davidcarmon417 April 2022
I've often thought that each decades viewers have looked back on the previous decade of Neighbours with disdain.

People who watched in the 1980s look back to those early years with characters such as Helen Daniels, Scott and Charlene, Henry Ramsey and Jim Robinson and are mostly remembering it through nostalgic eyes. Forgetting some of the hammy acting and storylines (Bouncers dream wedding anyone? Yes I know, that wasn't quite the 80s but near enough!).

Roll on to people who watched it in the 1990s with legendary characters including Cody Willis, Karl and Susan Kennedy, Toadie, Cheryl Stark, Tad and his double act with Paul McClain.

Those viewers from the 80's and 90's went into the 2000s complaining that the current cast (Scullys, Timmins) were nothing compared to the earlier bunch.

Get into the 2010s and people complain that that cast are inferior to the 2000s cast and so on it goes until we reach 2022. In 2032 people will look back on characters such as Levi Canning, Hendrix Grayson, Freya, Mackenzie with the same fondness.

It has transcended the decades. Each decade defining a generation and each as good, sometimes better than the last. It would seem that most of the naysayers have never watched the show, watched a few episodes or haven't watched it since their particular era.

As someone who has watched Neighbours for 35 years it has gone through a lot of cast changes and weird and wonderful storylines. But, for the most part, it has stayed oddly familiar. It did have a bit of a quality dip between 2011-2015 but most soaps and long runners do, it's inevitable. A four year blip out of 37 isn't bad going at all.

The current cast are a mix of returnees and newer faces. The cast turnover isn't high and the older characters don't feel like they've been shoehorned in for no reason, they all have a purpose.

Characters such as Mackenzie, played by the excellent Georgie Stone and Hendrix (Ben Turland) have given us some of the most thought provoking subjects in years. What did Helen Daniels ever do that was so progressive? (I'm not hating on Helen Daniels, she was the OG matriarch).

It's sad that it is coming to an end in 2022 as in the last six months it really had started to find itself again, featuring more location shooting around Melbourne compared to the previous ten years when it seemed to focus on set based filming which gave it a bit of an insular feel. Getting out and about has breathed some new life into it, a little too late unfortunately.

Personally I can't remember Neighbours never being there through my life. It is one of, if not the last link to my early years. It has been the one constant, reliable, familiar thing that I have taken through everything. It hasn't always been perfect, nothing ever is. But all in all it managed to create the perfect blend between light and dark.

The Soap were everything is perfect
Angelus212 July 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Neighbours follows the residents of Ramsay Street, as they go about their lives.

I've had aunts who loved the show during the Kylie Era and was aware of the show's presence, I watched it every now and then but it wasn't until they re-introduced Paul Robinson that I took a greater interest. I found the character to be quite interesting and his exploits were thrilling, for a while the show kept my attention and then around 2008, I lost interest, but I've begun to watch the show once more and I've realised although Neighbours is not the greatest soap in the world, it has the feel good factor.

The acting, directing, writing is absolutely terrible, the problems occur and are solved in an episode, or by the end of the week.

Even with all it's faults its still a wonderful little soap to relax with.

The show has gone down the drain!
ChuckyCheese201724 November 2017
I used to like Neighbours but I can't stand it now! They have tried to go down the road of Home and Away and I hate that show too! (H&A used to be good until about 10 years ago) They are both cheap and sleazy now. It will never be as popular as Home and Away no matter how hard they try so give up trying and go back to just being Neighbours! The Valance girl and the "priest" story line is the point where I thought there is no hope for this show. The story lines are boring even when they try and make it sexual. It's been boring for a long time!!! Shortland Street, now that is a show I enjoy! I don't like all the sex talk in these kinds of show but at least Shortland Street is interesting at the same time. Anyone bored with Neighbours and let's face it, who wouldn't be!?! Give Shortland Street a go!

Exactly what we need.
emilyrose-061718 March 2022
Neighbours is pure escapeism . Not the usual doom and gloom of other soaps. It is thirty minutes of pure joy where everyone is welcome.

Each episode has comedy, drama, cliffhangers not to mention the resident villain. Also beautiful Melbourne scenery,What more could a brilliant show need.?

The actor playing Harold Bishop legitimately saved my life.
loraw-772071 August 2022
In 1991 I was an Olympic gymnastics hopeful. They called me the rubber thatcher. Because of my great flexibility and at the time I sported a hairdo similar to that of Margaret Thatcher.

It was early May, and with a tour group of other Olympians we were taken to Ramsay Street.

The day progressed quite nicely as we got to not only see behind the scenes and inside lassiters, we also got to see them shoot a few scenes.

At lunchtime, sandwiches were served. I grabbed the egg salad (my favourite) and sat down next to some of the cast members. Harold Bishop being one.

Just before I took my first bite he turned to me and said " I love egg salad. I just wish they wouldn't add those chilli flakes. Makes it too spicy and always gives me heart burn".

I threw the sandwich to the ground and thanked him. You see I'm allergic to chilli flakes. Had I taken a bite of that sandwich, then I would have gotten a very upset stomach. This encounter changed the course of my life. I quit the Olympics (actually banned for doping, but still.) And became a volunteer at the red cross. Money has been tight, but thankfully helping the homeless is a red cross speciality.

Great show, thumbs up👍

Also why wasnt lou in the final?

Is neighbours suitable for under 18s?
alanjul5 January 2022
I've criticized neighbours before for its focus on woke and diverse issues. I feel the storyline of a threesome between a character "dating" 2 men simultaneously is a step too far. Would you be happy with your child watching this?

Australia's Global Series
rhys_oz8 October 2002
"Neighbours", contrary to many peoples' opinions, is a well acted and well crafted soap opera. It is its timeslot in the UK among children's programmes which has been a caused for some critics to label it "cheap teens soap" - but in many countries "Neighbours" earns a prime time slot. "Neighbours'" daily screening in more than 57 countries with a daily audience in excess of 120 million viewers is testament to its success. In a television world dominated by soap operas, "Neighbours" has always remained close to its original concept by soap-master Reg Watson.

"Neighbours" has produced a host of actors who have graduated from "Ramsay Street" to become world-wide celebrities, most notably Kylie Minogue (Charlene Mitchell); Jason Donovan (Scott Robinson); Guy Pearce (Mike Young); Natalie Imbruglia (Beth Brennan) and Holly Valance (Felicity Scully). Its mix of children, young adults, parents and grandparents has ensured fascination for all generations, and the show has succeeded far beyond its creator's expectations - especially in Britian where it was bought as a daytime 'filler' programme for the BBC in 1986.

"Neighbours" celebrated the filming of its landmark 4000th episode in December 2001, firmly making it Australia's longest running series, and one of the World's most popular and acclaimed television programmes. With the addition of actors such as Janet Andrewartha, Maggie Millar and Madeleine West, as well as old favourites Tom Oliver; Ian Smith, Jackie Woodburne and Alan Fletcher, this success can only continue.

Used to be so good
sg27902 April 2007
I am so angry at the writers of neighbours. For years i have come home from school and watched this quality Australian soap. However recently it has gone down down down.

They have introduced too many new characters, filled with too many cliché stories, im not even going to waste my time explaining them. At the moment it is so boring and predictable to watch.

The original characters are slowly fading away now and it really isn't worth watching.

If you are a new neighbours watcher you will most likely watch this, if you were a loyal neighbours fan, probably haven't watched it for a while, don't bother watching it you will be deeply upset but its catastrohic downfall.(if thats spelt right)

ARGH!

Terrible, Just TERRIBLE
NeverAgain8524 November 2009
I first started watching Neighbours when I met my girlfriend about 2 years ago because she watched it. Ever since, it has been attached to me like a parasite (along with Home and Away). First off, it has to be the most unrealistic show, along with the most annoying inlikable characters who act like complete and utter fairies, The same dialogue is portrayed in every episode. The acting is decent however, but thats not the point. The stories are like there from the another universe that would rarely come into another persons life. The character Zeke for example is the most head-wrecking person to ever exist, ever notice in every scene, all he does is complain, most lightly because he has never got laid, and he blames everyone else because of it. I don't want to express my hate, but I am, its a terrible show, just AAAAAAAAAGH!!. It makes me want to vomit over and over when people like this are licking each others a*s the whole time (Carl and Susan) One episode is enough for a lifetime, wait, no, one scene...

Starting to reach retirement
j-michelle-jr25 February 2016
I used to watch this show every night many many years ago. It was entertaining and had enough drama to keep it interesting, and started careers for several actors/singers today. In recent years, the standard has slipped a lot. The story lines are bland, the spoken script is poorly acted and the show is not very entertaining anymore. Around 6 years ago it was still alright. But in the last year it has really gone downhill. The ratings confirm this too. There comes a point when the producers/creators/cast need to realize that, yes, they had a very good run, spanning several decades, but that run is coming to an end. While it is still better than Home and Away (which has far too much unrealistic drama), it seems the producers/executives will hire anyone, regardless of acting ability, because there are some terrible actors on the show at present who have probably never acted a day in there life before being cast.

The best and worst show ever
mr_me20 April 2006
I LOVE Neighbours, it is the best form of escapism ever, with it's ridiculous story lines, laughable characters and the over the top drama. It really is the highlight of the evening after a hard days work. In the UK, other viewers come home from work to get depressed by watching Coronation Street and Eastenders, other choose to be cheered up by Neighbours.

The average character only seems to last two years, although there are still a few long term ones left. Characters are guaranteed to have either a spectacular departure, or go on a cruise/honeymoon/sci-fi convention/help out on parents farm and never come back.

Hilarious recent story lines include Susan seducing a priest, the musical, the plane crash, Harold's dead daughters double, the evil twin, anything to do with Harold and his trombone and Sindi's transformation into a mental patient.

The Next Progression...
briortega22 July 2020
With Toadfish's ever-changing list of jobs, surely he's due to become a doctor in the next season?

Mind you, with all the law issues in just this one street, you'd think he'd have earned enough money to buy a bigger and better house in and around Brighton or Hawthorn and move away from the cesspool that is Ramsay st?

Pure Entertainment
kurflunk2 July 2006
Possibly the most entertaining 20 minutes of any given day and surely the most under-rated TV programme alive today. Summery, shiny, honest 5 day a week Australian soap opera set in Ramsay Street, Erinsborough (Melbourne, allegedly) A launchpad for much talent, featuring addictive, irritatingly, lovable, joyful story lines and characters. A programme which requires minimal concentration, but has a sense of decency and humour like no other. Generally ridiculed, but secretly appreciated. Held together by the more reliable older experienced actors, but allows younger guys a chance to own their story lines and see what they can do. At times banal, but quite charming, warm and wonderful. In short - NEIGHBOURS ROCKS!

Neighbours is trash!
tim-anderson-1879121 February 2020
I was only barely interested previously with Neighbours weak plots and embarrassing acting but now, oh my god, what a load of cheap utter rubbish. Dreadful acting coupled with pathetic attempts at steamy smut, Neighbours has become the biggest embarrassing joke on Australian television.

Neighbours- Why I love it
Apolla27 September 1999
When I was about seven years old, I switched the TV on, and there were the opening credits of Neighbours, complete with the broken window and the cricket ball. Since then, over ten years ago, I've been completely addicted to the show. I don't exactly know why. Jason Donovan may have had something to do with it, and admittedly, the show has never been quite the same since Scott & Charlene left. Although there have been awful moments, some bad acting and chipboard sets, it's still pretty good. After Helen died, it was the end of an era, and maybe the show has never recovered, but I'm still addicted.

''Everybody needs good neighbours!''
Rabical-911 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
There is little point in me explaining what is show is about or who is or has been in it. All I can really say about it is that is an awful show with hackneyed plots and bad actors.

It was 1985 when the residents of Ramsay Street first floated onto the screens. It seemed to find an audience right away, many of which ( perhaps unsurprisingly ) happened to be women. The show was also responsible for launching the careers of Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue. I personally found the show excessively painful to watch, especially with the unwarranted incidental music which cropped up in the most inappropriate of places. Naturally, 'Neighbours' came in for quite a bashing in comedy circles, what with comedians like Josie Lawrence and Kate Robbins giving it merciless treatment on their comedy shows. Even 'Rab C. Nesbitt' famously ranted about it in a 'Naked Video' sketch in the late '80's. Sadly, TV controllers do not seem to have noticed or taken notice of this as the show is still running today. Like with 'Knots Landing', about the only nice thing that one can say about the show is the catchiness of the theme tune.

Yet another show degraded by time
atomius1 December 2004
Warning: Spoilers
As with many of our current 'dramas', and i admit i never watch them much, Neighbours has fallen with age into the decaying modern age, and with it, any hope of remaining a good watch. The life of the families of Ramsay Street is anything but entertaining, and as with all 'soap opera dramas' it is extremely shallow, a character may hate someone one minute and love them the next, etc. Due to this i would hardly even look at it's name on a TV guide. However, because it is Australian... Due to it being set in Australia rather than America or Britain (where incidentally for a long time it was a smashing hit, old chap) it IS more down to earth, and it is more realistic, but the margin is thinning year by year. As with all soap dramas, it's pathetic excuses of cliffhangers and good acting put to waste in unbelievably stupid scenes makes it hardly worth watching, if at all. Seriously, watch the news and do yourself a favor. That's REAL drama!
