Kirk Simon: "You walk down the hall of Princeton and the first office is Toni Morrison, then it's Tracy K Smith, then it's Jeffrey Eugenides."
In the third and final installment of my conversation with Kirk Simon on The Pulitzer At 100, we discuss filming Natalie Portman in Paris for her reading of Jorie Graham's The Dream of the Unified Field, Liev Schreiber (who played Martin Baron in Tom McCarthy's Spotlight) picking Death Of A Salesman and The Grapes Of Wrath, Ken Burns and The Statue of Liberty, Toni Morrison (Beloved), Jeffrey Eugenides (Middlesex), photographers John Filo (Kent State) and Nick Ut (Napalm Girl), finding Kim Phuc, Maureen Corrigan on Philip Roth, and the man who started it all - Joseph Pulitzer.

Robert Longo: The Destroyer Cycle Metro Pictures Gallery, NYC May 3 - June 17, 2017
Looking at the career of the artist Robert Longo can be a philosophical meditation on style. Style, as opposed to stylization, is a key to understanding Longo’s importance as an artist, both at the beginning of his career with the Men in Cities drawings, through his large charcoal drawings of guns, to his blue-chip Abstract Expressionist paintings, and into this recent, powerful exhibition at Metro Pictures.
A lot of art that we place in the category “Eighties Art” (see this year’s Whitney exhibition, a perfect collection of specimens) rested heavily on stylization, not style. Much of this type of work was paintings that came with pre-fab “movements,” object-sculptures allegedly imbued with some post-modern sensibilities, and, most especially, the adding of “neo-“ before any historical art movement to create a new category. At first, Longo’s...

The Statue of Liberty went dark on Tuesday night causing mass confusion on social media.
Only Lady Liberty’s torch and crown were visible in the night sky as the statue stood in darkness in New York Harbor for a few hours.
Several on Twitter suggested the power outage was in solidarity with A Day Without A Woman, the women’s strike planned for Wednesday across the United States.

From the terrific to the tenuous, here is our spotter’s guide for Easter eggs and nerdy nods in Logan...
This article contains lots of Logan spoilers.
Logan has finally arrived. Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen, James Mangold and the writers Scott Frank and Michael Green have served up a brutal bloodbath of a movie that still manages to have a heart. It’s by far the best solo Wolverine movie, and it’s been certified fresh among critics. Hurrah!
Part of the brilliance of Logan is how it’s slave to no continuity. There is no post-credits scene and no mid-credits scene, and the stars of the other X-Men films on Fox’s slate are notable only by their absence.
With that separation from the rest of the series comes a filmmaking freedom that’s never been allowed in a Wolverine movie before. You get blood,...

Say goodbye to wacky wigs for husband and wife Kgb agents Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth (Keri Russell) on “The Americans.” It’s a sure sign that the Cold War spy series is winding down for Seasons 5 and 6. But it also means focusing more attention on the survival of their marriage and family.
“It was a transitional season and it was hard saying goodbye to [aliases] Clark and Jennifer because those looks are retired now, but it was fun doing more truth by craft with Philip,” said Peg Schierholz, who is head of hair.

While more than a fair number of filmgoers were skeptical of the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, it managed to make a believer out of most of them. The film embraced the goofy and fun tone of the cartoon series fans grew up with.
This time around, with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows, the filmmakers seem to have much more of the fans' good faith, which is obviously a greater starting point for any flick.
Returning to produce the sequel are Brad Fuller and Andrew Form, and stepping into the franchise at the helm is Earth To Echo director Dave Green in his second feature film.
Lrm had a chance to sit down with these three and talk about the tone of Turtles 2, the challenges, and the memorable villains they brought into the movie.
Lrm: What I enjoyed about the film is that it's for a broader audience.

Pre-credit sequence. Storms seem to be building as No Collar returns to camp. "Nina got what was coming to her," Hali cackles, malevolently, as if Nina had done her any harm at all. Hali explains to Will that his name only came up twice as a safety net. Will says that No Collar has the unit they want, but he also knows that he's doomed unless he can get Joe to turn on the girls this early. He eats things that would make a billy-goat puke. Yikes. There's a big snake over at Blue Collar. Mike successfully machetes the snake and he skins it for dinner. Actually, it's not that big at all, but Mike is willing to eat anything, as he proved with the scorpion situation. Rodney is hesitant, but he wants protein. It seems that the hatchet has been buried between Rodney and Mike. That's nice! Major cluck-up.

In an industry full of crazy, colourful characters, there’s no-one crazier or more colourful than Vince McMahon. From his early years as the straight-laced announcer, through to the evil Mr. McMahon, and onto crazy grandad Vince that he is today, McMahon has often proved to be the most larger-than-life figure in an industry built on larger-than-life figures.
Few people realise what a rags-to-riches tale the story of Vince McMahon is. He didn’t meet his father, Vincent J. McMahon until he was twelve years old, and eventually he would join the elder McMahon’s World Wide Wrestling Federation promotion. There was very little nepotism, however, and Vince had to prove himself. He began promoting regionally in Maine and worked in 1971, and it would be another ten years climbing the ladder before he proved to his father he was worthy of inheriting the family company.

With every new trailer that comes out for Godzilla, it just looks more and more badass. The new international trailer for the film is no exception, as it shows off a level of destruction that had previously only been hinted at. Buildings destroyed? Yeah, it’s got that. A city in ruins? Most definitely. The Statue of Liberty in a state of extreme disrepair? Ok, yeah, that one is a little bit of a disaster movie cliche. But it’s in there!
We recently saw a poster and some images from the movie, one of which was Godzilla’s very distinctive tail cutting a swath of destruction through a city street. We also saw a video in which director Gareth Edwards provided commentary on the domestic trailer for the film, giving some insights into the plot of the movie and the specific scenes that were picked for the trailer. Big-budget blockbusters have a penchant for destroying famous landmarks, and they don’t get much more iconic than the Statue of Liberty. As one of the most recognisable structures in the world, the statue has appeared in countless movies and more often not the poor gal has been on the receiving end of a battering.
Dating way back to 1933′s disaster epic Deluge, numerous productions have taken a shot at Lady Liberty. She’s been blown up, knocked down, submerged and even thrown through the air in the name of entertainment, with the latest Godzilla trailer indicating that the statue’s cinematic exploits will once again end in tears.
Ghostbusters II made her the hero and Planet of the Apes used the iconography to deliver one of the all-time great twist endings, but this article will focus on the movies in which the Statue of Liberty had a much tougher time.

Tomorrow is Halloween, and then we're moving on to Thanksgiving in November. But before the spooky holiday expires, we wanted to highlight some of our favorite movie-themed costumes from 2013. Last year when we did this, Hurricane Sandy had taken its toll on the East Coast, and it was a slow news day, but we figured this should become a new tradition since there are so many creative people out there with amazing costumes. We tried to include less common costumes and original ideas (there are always tons of Jack Skellington and Sally costumes), but a couple were irresistibly adorable despite being very common. Look! If you're visiting New York City and you only have two days to get everything in, there are some things that you simply must see: The Statue of Liberty, The Empire State Building, Times Square, The Met.
But the number one sight you should see is the new trailer for "2 Days in New York."
The latest film from French indie icon Julie Delpy ("Before Sunset"), "2 Days in New York" is a sequel to her acclaimed hit "2 Days in Paris." This time around, though, she's left behind the motherland for a new life in the Big Apple that includes typical New Yorker things like having Chris Rock as a boyfriend.
Which is all fine and dandy until her crazy French family shows up for a visit, just in time to meet up with Rock's crazy American family. So what happens in the ultimate 21st century multi-culti culture clash?
Well, check out the new trailer,...

Judging by the comments here and here, everyone is a bit “Prometheus”-ed out at this point, even if, like me, you came down on the positive side. It’s easy to forget the film only opened in North America last Friday, so epic is the flow of post-viewing discourse. (“Prometheus”: The “Girls”/"Mad Men" of summer cinema.)
So what more can be said? Plenty. As Titan Books’ gorgeous, hardcover “Prometheus: The Art of the Film” makes evident, we’ve only hit the tip of the Nostromo in terms of understanding everything that’s visible, or hinted at, in Ridley Scott’s divisive sci-fi epic. With startling imagery and simple, unfussy text from author Mark Salisbury, the book offers something viewers have so far lacked: A complete overview of the film’s concept and design from the filmmakers themselves. And until the Blu-ray release, this is likely the...

I first began to seriously explore writing as a vocation after what I think of as my red-shirt year of college – or what my collegiate transcript would indicate as my first junior year, essentially. Diane von Furstenberg at the recent launch of her new fragrance, Diane, aboard the mega-yacht Eos. I have been on a millionaire’s yacht before, but never on a billionaire’s, and let me tell you, there is an h-u-g-e difference. Wow! Leave it to the effortless queen fashion diva Diane von Furstenberg to have her fragrance-launch cocktail party on her husband Barry Diller’s major, mega-yacht, Eos, which was technically parked at Pier 59 in N.Y.C. on a Sunday evening a couple of weeks ago. But the yacht was so major and mega that it took up the entire space between two piers, 59 and 60. We checked our shoes before boarding (thank God my pedicure looked good), and off we went to circle around Lady Liberty at sunset. Of course the bar area was outfitted with the best-looking bartenders I have ever seen (and I’ve seen plenty, I...

This week the world's greatest winemakers will gather in New York for an annual bacchanal of tasting and feasting. Sophie Menin speaks to Daniel Johnnes who organizes the event.
Daniel Johnnes' office looks out onto the intersection of West Broadway and Canal Street at the mouth of the Holland Tunnel. Yet for Johnnes, the view is far less important than the gallery of photos on the wall to the right of his desk, where black-and-white headshots of Burgundy's greatest winemakers peer over his shoulder like patron saints: Christophe Roumier of Domaine Georges Roumier in Chambolle-Musigny; Jean-Marie Fourrier of Domaine Fourrier in Gevry Chambertin; Dominique Lafon of Domaine Comtes Lafon in Meursault; and Frédéric Mugnier of Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier also in Chambolle-Musigny, to name a few. All have the pensive eyes and deeply etched skin of men who spend their life in the vineyard and the cellar.

In the poster, a mushroom cloud can be seen reflected in a gas mask, or respirator. The Statue of Liberty is likely shown in the right of the poster, as one anonymous character looks on, with bloodied nose. The poster promises: "to survive the end of the world you must first survive each other." This tagline hints at the survivor's dwindling food resources and their inability to venture outside for more (nuclear fallout). Chicago – With the release of “The American,” it’s time to rally ‘round the flagpole and see if it waves. And that mix of metaphors conjures the great American film, the movies with American or America in their titles that have flown like an eagle soaring through red, white and blue skies on a starry night, punctuated by fireworks on the 4th of July.

As unblinking and truthful story about the American Dream as any pre-9/11 film, Ab rides on the performance of Kevin Spacey as a burnt-out corporate nebbish named Lester who is unloved by his ambitious real estate agent wife (Annette Bening) and is quietly desperate about the life that has passed him by.
When Lester is unexpectedly freed from his 9 to 5 hell, he embarks on a journey which includes workouts, weed and lust – for an unattainable teenage friend of his daughter.

The U.S. government unveils a new green card. It shows a lot more coherence than immigration policy itself.
The government hasn't shown much love for immigrants of late, what with Arizona passing the "Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever" bill, and 10 other states hot on the trail.
So when U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services unveiled a redesigned green card yesterday, we braced ourselves. Surely it would involve some horrid, jingoistic mashup of eagles and flags and rah-rah-u.S.A. crap. Right? Luckily, improbably, we were wrong.
Make no mistake. Tech-wise, the green card is plenty nativistic. It was designed to "deter immigration fraud" and incorporates "several major new security features" to that end. Among them: laser-engraved fingerprints; high-res micro-images on the back of the card that are nearly impossible to reproduce; and embedded radio frequency identification that lets border protection officers scan cards from afar like a sort of digital Panopticon.

All the movies on this list feature countless thousands (probably millions in most cases) of innocent people shuffling off this mortal coil. Human are more than likely the cause of most of the disasters that appear here. Unfortunately, though, for all of those pesky humans that meet their demise, it’s the famous landmarks that seem to become the money shots of each of these films. They are icons to their respective countries, but these famous landmarks never looked so good than when they were getting blown the hell up.

There are a handful of symbols that are associated with the United States of America: The White House, the Washington Monument, the Golden Gate Bridge, that new football stadium in Dallas. But perhaps the most enduring icon that sums up this country — both practically and ideally — is the Statue of Liberty. It's a little ironic, then, that it came from France. It was a gift from that country to celebrate the centennial of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and to symbolize the friendship between the two nations that was established during the American Revolution. Standing at 151 feet tall (for a total of 305 feet with the pedestal), the Statue of Liberty represents the promise of the United States as a land of opportunity and a place to start over. On this day in 1886, President Grover Cleveland dedicated the monument. On the same day 50 years later, President Franklin Roosevelt re-dedicated...
