Digital babies. Altered vocals. Deceased actors back from the grave. A list of major films that have used AI in their making:
Nb: The following contains an unavoidable spoiler for Alien: Romulus. Do skip that entry if you haven’t seen the film yet.
As the past few months have proven, AI is becoming an increasingly controversial topic both inside the film industry and without. As companies like OpenAI talk excitedly about the next generation of Artificial Intelligence replacing millions of jobs over the coming years, Oscar hopeful The Brutalist has sparked a backlash over its use of AI to adjust its actors’ performances.
The consternation has been such that the Academy is reportedly thinking about making it mandatory for filmmakers to disclose their use of AI when submitting their movies. The film industry, in essence, is racing to keep up with an area of technology that has only risen...

Recasting a character is always a tricky proposition. Sometimes, it's just not working out, and you go in a different direction, but when you're dealing with a franchise character, you risk angering longtime fans who have emotionally invested in a particular actor's performance. That was the case when "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" replaced Aunt Viv, recasting Janet Hubert with Daphne Reid, and people still talk about that situation decades later.
There are also instances when an actor dies while filming something meant to be ongoing. In early 2025, it was reported that, despite fan investment in Chadwick Boseman's performance, Marvel is considering recasting T'Challa ahead of "Black Panther 3." In fact, writer Jeff Sneider reported that the role had already been offered to someone new, but they decided not to take the risk. "They turned it down, not wanting to jeopardize their career momentum by stepping into Boseman's gigantic shoes,...

You ever watch something so weird, so wildly unhinged, that you walk out of the theater grinning like a lunatic, half-convinced you just hallucinated the whole thing? That’s The Monkey—a gloriously deranged fever dream of cruel deaths, deep-seated childhood trauma, and cackling absurdity. Imagine Twin Peaks if it was directed by John Waters, but with a murderous toy monkey at its core. Osgood Perkins has officially lost his mind in the best way possible, delivering the best Stephen King adaptation in decades.
“..so weird, so wildly unhinged, that [you’ll] walk out of the theater grinning like a lunatic”
It all starts when twin brothers Hal and Bill (played as children by Christian Convery and as adults by Theo James) stumble upon their father’s old toy monkey in a closet. The thing looks like it’s been pulled straight from a cursed auction listing, complete with piercing glass eyes...

Javier Bardem’s upcoming Spanish-language drama “El Ser Querido” from multiple Goya Award-winning writer-director Rodrigo Sorogoyen is heading to the EFM with the English title “The Beloved,” with Goodfellas launching the project to buyers.
The film — also starring Victoria Luengo (“The Room Next Door”) — is a drama about an acclaimed film director and his daughter, a struggling actress. After years of estrangement, they make a movie together, and are forced to confront a troubled past neither of them has wanted to face. Sorogoyen wrote the screenplay.
The film is being produced by Sorogoyen’s Madrid production label Caballo Films, with Movistar Plus+ and Le Pacte co-producing. The latter will release the movie in France.
Bardem earned a Golden Globe nomination this year for his turn in Netflix’s limited series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez.” He was last seen in “Dune: Part Two” and Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” live-action remake,...

At the outset of 1993, there wasn't a more bankable movie star than Kevin Costner. Dating back to Brian De Palma's "The Untouchables" in 1987, Costner had starred in at least one blockbuster every year. He possessed an earnestness and practical facility that recalled Gary Cooper, but he could place a sexy, ornery spin on the ball if need be (particularly as minor league catcher Crash Davis in Ron Shelton's masterful "Bull Durham"). He was such a winning presence onscreen and as a Hollywood concept in general that his Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences peers enthusiastically declared his "Dances with Wolves" the Best Picture of 1990 over Martin Scorsese's undeniable "Goodfellas." He also snagged the Best Director trophy, which felt like a statement of principle from the Oscars: let's make movies big and sweeping and morally upright again.

Jennifer Esposito’s Fresh Kills does not unfold in the bluster and bravado one might expect from a mafia narrative. Instead, it invites us to peer into the quiet, suffocating corners of a world where family ties, rather than the criminal enterprise itself, become the true source of anguish.
Set against the grim backdrop of Staten Island—a place as decayed and overcast as the lives it holds—the film traces the lives of two sisters, Connie and Rose, caught within the gravitational pull of their father’s shady empire. What seems like a film about mobsters quickly reveals itself to be something far darker: a meditation on the corrosion of the soul when familial loyalty trumps moral reckoning.

Ke Huy Quan’s Oscar win for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” as many awards narratives do, made for an unparalleled joyous celebration of a talent done dirty by an industry that had been a part of his life for decades. A minor fixture of the 1980s before he’d even hit puberty, the roles became scant into adulthood, sending Quan into a behind-the-scenes role as a stunt choreographer until Daniels picked him out for the role of a lifetime. But we already heard all of this ad nauseam the last time Quan was rightfully in the spotlight; now, just under two years after winning that Oscar, it’s time to see how all that rightful celebration has been channeled towards the exact opportunities that Quan had been unfairly lacking before his return to the frontlines.

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
Horror movies may not often get a whole lot of respect, critically speaking. For whatever reason, they are often treated as a lesser form of entertainment. It's only the rarest of rare genre offerings that can go on to become embraced both critically and commercially, with Jordan Peele's "Get Out" serving as a shining example from relatively recent times. That's an outlier though. One undeniable truth though is that these movies are a reliable backbone for Hollywood studios, delivering consistent profits against relatively low investments. Good movies, bad movies, it often doesn't matter.
Hardcore horror fans will tell you that the number of bad movies far outweighs the good in any given year. It's about searching for that diamond in the rough.

Lorraine Bracco played the role of the defensive but empathetic Dr. Jennifer Melfi in The Sopranos. Tasked with giving therapy to a mafia boss, Dr. Melfi has to maintain her composure and not judge the moral ethics of her client’s line of work while also helping him. Her on-screen co-star James Gandolfini played the boss Tony Soprano.
Bracco’s performance in The Sopranos was highly appreciated at the time. She received Primetime Emmy nominations four times, with thrice for Outstanding Lead Actress. She also received a Golden Globe nomination thrice. However, Bracco mentioned that playing Dr. Melfi was one of the most difficult roles in her career.

Imagine a world where The Sopranos wasn’t the same. Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas almost stole away one of the show’s greatest casting choices after James Gandolfini. Yes, things could’ve gone very differently, and not in a good way.

While Goodfellas is iconic in its own right, the thought of this actor missing from The Sopranos is like pasta without the sauce — unfathomable. Luckily, fate (and some solid decision-making) stepped in to keep this legendary role right where it belonged.

International film biz pros may be gearing up for the Berlinale and its European Film Market in February, but most of Europe’s top buyers were already back on the circuit last week for the Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Paris showcasing French movies, series and talent.

More than 80 French film and TV sales companies set up residence in the hangar-like Espace Pullman in the shadow of the Montparnasse Tower, to showcase their new French-language wares to 500 buyers from roughly 40 mainly European territories.
After years of being crammed into separate rooms, it was the first time France’s film and TV sales sectors were together in the same space and there was a different kind of energy.

David Lynch will forever be known as a film auteur, though the consummate artist never restricted himself to a single medium. Painting, radio and even coffee production all fell within his repertoire — but Lynch’s final work as a director was “Twin Peaks: The Return.” Per the title, the 17-part Showtime series marked a homecoming of sorts for Lynch, who had circled back to the small screen after a quarter-century-long hiatus. With the ABC drama “Twin Peaks,” Lynch and his co-creator Mark Frost had already disrupted television for good. With “The Return,” Lynch cemented serial, episodic storytelling as a cornerstone of his legacy.

Some of the most powerful films ever made have been inspired by real-life events, bringing true stories to the big screen in unforgettable ways. Whether they are trying to capture moments of triumph or tragedy, well-made movies based on a true story more often than not grip audiences, spark conversation, and have an everlasting impact.
While they may not always be the most historically accurate movies, these titles have a way of making real-life feel more vivid with their masterful storytelling, emotional depth, and cinematic brilliance. What ultimately makes a movie based on a true story great is it can properly capture the emotions behind the stories. Whether it’s the haunting journey depicted in 12 Years a Slave or the riveting rise-and-fall narrative of Goodfellas, some of them continue to be hailed as the best movies of all time, securing their place as timeless gems in the world of cinema.

Robert De Niro goes up against Robert De Niro in biographical gangster drama The Alto Knights. Here’s a trailer.
When discussing mob drama The Alto Knights, formerly known as Wiseguys, it is impossible not to think about Martin Scorsese’s seminal gangster film Goodfellas, in which Robert De Niro played the smooth talking Jimmy Conway opposite Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci. The Alto Knights reunites De Niro and screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi for a story that sees De Niro play the dual roles of quarrelling mob bosses.
It’s safe to say we’re rather excited to see this.
The Alto Knights has been a long time coming. The film was stuck in development hell for a number of decades before Warner Bros revived the project in the summer of 2022.
The synopsis reads as follows:
“The most dangerous enemy is an old friend.” This mobster thriller movie follows two of...

Robert De Niro is starring as the Mafia boss in a mob drama. Sounds about right. But this time, he’s playing both lead roles: Vito Genovese and Frank Costello. De Niro will double his acting expertise in The Alto Knights, a crime drama inspired by the true story behind Costello and Genovese’s deadly rivalry.
The film’s newly released trailer finds Genovese and Costello in a dimly lit restaurant, talking over their different approaches to organized crime. Costello informs Genovese, “You’re not where I am. I give to charities,...

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the official trailer for The Alto Knights, starring Academy Award winner Robert De Niro in a dual role. Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Barry Levinson, the film is rated R for violence and pervasive language.
The Alto Knights follows two of New York’s most notorious organized crime bosses, Frank Costello (De Niro) and Vito Genovese (De Niro), as they vie for control of the city’s streets. Once the best of friends, petty jealousies and a series of betrayals place them on a deadly collision course that will reshape the Mafia (and America) forever.
The film was written by Oscar nominee Nicholas Pileggi (Goodfellas) and produced by Oscar winner Irwin Winkler, Levinson, Jason Sosnoff, Charles Winkler and David Winkler, with Mike Drake executive producing.
Robert De Niro stars alongside Debra Messing (Will & Grace), Cosmo Jarvis (Shōgun), Kathrine Narducci (The Irishman), Michael Rispoli (Billions), Michael Adler (Peppermint) and Ed Amatrudo.

Robert De Niro has played some of the most (in)famous gangsters in movie history. Vito Corleone in The Godfather Part II, Al Capone in The Untouchables, James Conway in Goodfellas, Sam 'Ace' Rothstein in Casino... the list goes on. And after his monumental turn as Frank Sheeran in The Irishman, a movie many felt was a farewell to the mob movie genre from those who'd made its greatest hits, you'd be forgiven for thinking De Niro was done playing wise guys. Enter Barry Levinson. Enter Goodfellas scribe Nicholas Pileggi. Enter Alto Knights. Not only is De Niro back on the organised crime beat in the Rain Man filmmaker's dramatisation of the feud between crime family heads Vito Genovese and Frank Costello in 50s America — he's playing both of the mobsters himself! Yes, the time of Robert Deux Niro is nigh... and you can check out the first trailer for...

Robert De Niro pulls double duty for his latest crime drama in the trailer for The Alto Knights, a new film from director Barry Levinson focusing on the story of the real-life gangsters Vito Genovese (De Niro) and Frank Costello (De Niro).
Goodfellas screenwriter and Oscar nominee Nicholas Pileggi wrote the script for The Alto Knights, which stars Robert De Niro as Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, two Italian Americans who head two New York-based crime families in the mid-20th century. Reports about their reign show that in 1957, Genovese tried to assassinate Costello, resulting in Costello exiting the mob to recover from his injuries and distance himself from “the life.”
In the Alto Knights trailer, Vito Genovese does not approve of how Frank Costello runs his family. Genovese says Costello is fooling himself if he thinks he can present himself as an upstanding citizen while running a shadowy organization behind closed doors.

In the new trailer for The Alto Knights, Robert De Niro plays two dueling crime bosses whose looks barely differ save for a prosthetic nose and glasses. Watch the clip below.
Directed by Barry Levinson, the film revolves around real-life friends turned enemies Frank Costello and Vito Genovese (both played by De Niro) as “they vie for control of the city’s streets. Once the best of friends, petty jealousies and a series of betrayals place them on a deadly collision course that will reshape the Mafia (and America) forever.”
“Let’s remember something. I put you where you are today,” Genovese pontificates in the trailer. “It’s because of me.” Then, he criticizes “Mr. Good Citizen” Costello for trying to balance being a gangster and going legit: “You wanna be like them? Come on, you ain’t like them. They own this country. They’re bigger gangsters than we ever could be.

Robert De Niro is reuniting with his “Goodfellas” screenwriter Nick Pileggi for yet another true story of the Italian-American mafia.
De Niro in the first trailer for “The Alto Knights” portrays not one but two real-life mob bosses, Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, during their turf rivalry in the 1950s. “Once the best of friends, petty jealousies and a series of betrayals place them on a deadly collision course that will reshape the Mafia (and America) forever,” the official synopsis for the film reads.
“The Sopranos” and “The Wire” producer Barry Levinson (“Rain Man”) directs the film; Levinson previously collaborated with De Niro on the HBO TV movie “The Wizard of Lies” (2017) and political satire film “Wag the Dog” (1997).

‘The Alto Knights’ Trailer: Robert De Niro Plays Two Mafia Bosses in Barry Levinson’s Crime Thriller

Robert De Niro is a two-hit wonder in the trailer for the upcoming gangster film “The Alto Knights” from Barry Levinson. De Niro stars in a double role as both mob bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, real-life kingpins of New York’s Genovese crime family.
Alongside De Niro stars Debra Messing as Costello’s wife Bobbie, Kathrine Narducci as Genovese’s wife Anna and Cosmo Jarvis. “The Alto Knights” is set to follow the story of the Italian American mafiosi in the mid-twentieth century and Genovese’s attempted hit on Costello in 1957.
De Niro is no stranger to the crime thriller, especially ones with mob ties. One of his first was Martin Scorsese’s 1973 feature “Mean Streets” where he starred alongside Harvey Keitel. De Niro then joined Francis Ford Coppola for the 1974 “The Godfather Part II” and then Scorsese again for his 1990 mob feature “Goodfellas.” De Niro has also starred in “Casino,...

It began with the spark of a candle in 1941 related to the Max Fleischer Superman cartoons. Wait, a comic book genre?! No one was certain what to think about pages coming to life. The comic book genre has been under siege during "Awards Season" since 1978 when Christopher Reeve made the world believe a man could fly.
Recently, a different Bat signal had been emblazoned across Hollywood's sky, and it is solid gold. Can we stop hating on this genre now?
It probably won't happen as long as people like Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, Roland Emmerich, and David Cronenberg are helming Hollywood. They're so influential and vociferous against the comic book genre that it tends to make the award bureaus reconsider a person acting in spandex really isn't "acting." As if cosplay doesn't involve imagination.
And so, hate continues against any visual entertainment from comic books and graphic novels.

Aldis Hodge, producer and star of Cross, and Lauren Anderson, head of content and brand innovation at Amazon MGM Studios, say the value of the Prime Video series results from its local flavor.
When scripts for the Washington-set show underwent a “D.C. pass,” Hodge recalled, a producer hailing from the city insisted on a character calling another one “Slim,” as opposed to “son” or “dog,” as they might in other cities. “That one word generated, I would say, millions of viewership value,” Hodge said. “So many people commented and said, ‘The moment I heard “Slim” I was in.'”
Anderson said specific details can give a production “universality,” enabling it to be enjoyed by wider audiences. Hodge said Washington in particular gets reduced on screen to simple cutaways of the U.S. Capitol building or politcos walking down hallways. “We only see a political idea. Not a political truth,...

A sequel to Nicolas Cage’s arms-trafficking drama Lord of War is about to start shooting, but there are plenty of other Cage sequels I’d rather see first. Cage has been on a roll lately; he’s been taking on interesting roles in interesting movies and showing off his range. He gave an unforgettably sinister turn as a sadistic, Satanic serial killer in Longlegs, but he also gave a hilariously self-deprecating performance as a skewed, fictionalized version of himself in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.
There are a lot of Nicolas Cage movies that deserve a sequel. It would be great to see him revisit some of his funniest comedic roles, and there are a few of his classic action movies from the ‘90s that are due for a legacy sequel. The sequel to Lord of War certainly sounds intriguing, but is it really the best sequel for Cage to make right now?...

James Gunn has always been blunt about his opinions because he’s not the kind of person who would hold his words back to please others. Andrew Garfield addresses potentially playing Jesus in Martin Scorsese's new movie, saying "You can’t just keep waiting for Scorsese to call." The legendary director is best known for operating within the gangster genre with Mean Streets, Goodfellas, Casino, Gangs of New York, The Departed, and The Irishman. However, he has also frequently explored religion throughout his career with the religious epics The Last Temptation of Christ, Kundun, and Silence – the last of which starred Andrew Garfield.
Within his illustrious filmography, Scorsese's religious epics tend to be less popular than his gangster films, despite being equally as masterful. His 1988 epic, The Last Temptation of Christ, was quite controversial for retelling the life of Christ in human rather than divine terms. It ended up being a modest box office success that grossed over $33 million on a $7 million budget. One of his lesser-known films, 1997's Kundun, offered an account of the...

Tom Cruise has been up for many roles throughout his illustrious career, but one cult science fiction film that he campaigned hard for ended up being a box office disaster, despite deserving so much better. Kicking off his career in the early 80s, Tom Cruise has always been one of the biggest movie stars on the planet, with an impressive filmography to boot. Even then, there have been roles throughout Tom Cruise's career that he lobbied for, or was almost cast in, that never ended up working out.

One of Al Pacino and Robert De Niro's most iconic movies is getting a new streaming home soon. Pacino rose to fame portraying the youngest son of the Corleone family in The Godfather trilogy. His follow-up performances in Scarface and Dog Day Afternoon further cemented his status as a formidable actor. De Niro’s career formed along similar genre lines with gritty roles in mob films like Goodfellas, while winning Best Actor for his gripping portrayal of Jake Lamotta in Raging Bull. The two have thus defined the crime genre with unparalleled talent and their brooding on-screen presence in action-packed dramas.

Martin Scorsese may be revered as one of our greatest living filmmakers, but he has often had to fight tooth and nail to bring his visions to the big screen. This is largely due to the box office. Yes, "Raging Bull," "The King of Comedy," and "Goodfellas" are considered masterpieces, but they were not hits in theatrical release. So when, after being continuously passed over for Academy Award recognition, he set his sights on making his mobbed-up magnum opus "Gangs of New York," just about every studio in town declined to bankroll his dream.
It wasn't like he'd sprung the project on the film industry. Alberto Grimaldi, the renowned Italian producer of classics by Federico Fellini, Sergio Leone, and Bernardo Bertolucci, had taken out an ad announcing the production of the film way back in 1977. But when the New Hollywood revolution died with the bank-breaking failure of Michael Cimino's...

Good satire requires high intelligence on the part of the artist and the audience, and there are many satirical movies which have been accused of glorifying bad behavior. While this may sound like a deficiency on the part of the filmmakers, it's sometimes the case that their work has merely been misinterpreted by some people. Satire is never as effective if it's too blatant or preachy, so audiences often need to do some of the work.
Many great crime movie directors have been accused of glorifying their subjects, like Martin Scorsese, David Fincher and Guy Ritchie. This misunderstanding often comes from the fact that these directors find some redeemable qualities in their characters. Ultimately, this is meant to humanize and make crime seem like a human behavior rather than some abstract evil, but it's difficult to strike the right balance between doing this and glorifying the criminal lifestyle.

Miller's Crossing, one of the greatest gangster movies ever made, is an extremely underrated movie created by The Coen Brothers. As one of the best directing duos of all time, The Coen Brothers have directed classic films such as The Big Lebowski, Inside Llewyn Davis, Fargo, and No Country for Old Men. Joel and Ethan Coen have directed a total of 20 films together beginning with the 1984 neo-noir crime film Blood Simple.
Following their feature film debut, the Coen Brothers' sophomore effort was the 1987 crime comedy Raising Arizona, which remains one of Nicolas Cage's most iconic roles. They then went on to direct the showbiz comedy Barton Fink, the satirical comedy O Brother, Where Art Thou?, the black comedy Burn After Reading, and the instant classic Western True Grit. It’s officially part of the deluxe edition “reissue” of Sos, but it stands on its own,...
