The charismatic Prince Edwin is a new favorite in Camelot and holds a special interest for Rowanne after he saves her life. Both he and Prince Valiant appear to be the most likely candidates to win a coveted commission that could soon lead to knighthood. Valiant's barely contained jealousy of Edwin only drives Rowanne away from him and closer to her enthusiastic admirer.

King Arthur has Valiant lead a party, including Rowanne, escorting Duncan to Kengary so King Ian may punish him for causing Derek's death. Word reaches Camelot just after that Kengary is now in civil war with Derek's clan fighting Ian's for his not killing Duncan, and the company learns this during their journey. Despite trying to prepare himself for his fate, Duncan is overwhelmed that virtually all of Kengary now wishes him dead, but Valiant's anger makes him determined to hand him over. After chasing him down on a crumbling bridge, Valiant is carried downriver with him and both are presumed dead. Valiant alone has to finish the mission to see that justice is done, meaning his enemy is the only one there who can help him when he sickens.

Giles is in love with Lady Megan, the fiancée of another knight, Sir Gideon. But then he sees Sir Gideon acting suspiciously, making excuses even to Lady Megan, and hears him having a conversation which implies he may have something to do with the threat on a village for its silver. He admits to Valiant that bringing up these suspicions himself could cost him his knighthood, and Valiant has to consider whether his friend speaks out of jealousy. The two learn that an old enemy of Camelot, exiled by Sir Gideon, sends a representative who is extorting its silver. Most of the court is away and he doesn't have any luck passing on the message for Giles to Sir Gawain, who is there, so he decides to assist Giles in his investigation.

While running an errand, Valiant witnesses a young boy being beaten by his master for returning a poor man's money the master stole, and intervenes. The boy, Denys, hides in Valiant's wagon and begs to be allowed to stay rather than return. He proves himself hardworking and intelligent, and has a great deal in common with Valiant since he too has had the dream of a call to knighthood by King Arthur. But when his master arrives attempting to reclaim him and Valiant stands up to him, King Arthur's search for the cause of his circumstances reveals a shocking secret about Denys.

While trying to learn why one of Merlin's friends has lost contact with him, Valiant, Arn, Rowanne, and Sir Bryant encounter people saying their village was destroyed by something like a dragon. Then they find the fort they were headed for completely, inexplicably destroyed, and a neighboring one in the same state. They approach the son of one of King Arthur's vanquished enemies living nearby, Lord Maldon, who houses a Chinese guest who seems to want to distance himself from Camelot. Valiant learns that Lord Maldon is in league with the Vikings against Camelot and has tricked his visitor into distrusting it. Maldon catches him spying and spares the four only to let them see the Chinese invention that demolished the two forts, "Gun-powder", obliterate a third and sends them back with the message that he intends to use it to attack Camelot. King Arthur and Merlin are informed and their army's battle begins with the enemy having the advantage of a deadly weapon.

Graystone is under attack by none other than Cynan, represented by his son Dylan. Sir Gawain is instructed to lead the defense, but is secretly struggling with a mild chest-wound after his horse rammed him into the stable wall. He and King Arthur are reluctant to let Valiant, full of passion for seeing those who took everything from his family destroyed, go into battle, but Merlin persuades Arthur. And when Gawain falls from his horse and suffers thanks to his first injury, Valiant is called upon to lead the defense in his place.

Valiant goes to announce to his parents that he and the forces inspired by his recent victory will soon be attempting to reclaim their home. On the way, they come across Arn's former home of Warringham, and he chooses to leave the others to stay and help his people fight against a group of invaders, and possibly find his own destiny in the process. And it turns out he isn't the only one overwhelmed by Valiant's glory; his father is reluctant to join the attack.

Valiant leads the army into Thule. His enemy plans to lure them in and attack them at the last moment, but Dylan defies his father's orders and charges ahead and is captured. But then Valiant has a similar problem with his father's impatience to attack the castle since he is confident in his familiarity with his home's entrances. William enters secretly - and is captured by Cynan, forcing Valiant to look for an effective method of battle that will not see his father killed in retaliation.

Valiant has successfully driven Cynan out of the power he stole from his family, but he and his father lose the support of Owen, Thule's weapons master who wants to see Cynan dead rather than stand trial for his crimes, including the murders of Owen's family. Valiant gets Williem's approval to return to Camelot and be knighted, and when he goes back with Arn and Rowanne, they are overwhelmed at the thought of him achieving his knighthood before they do. Valiant himself is overwhelmed as the time draws near for him to fully pledge all service to King Arthur.

The first chance Valiant gets to command a force as a knight proves a formidable assignment: Mordred is leading a force of men causing trouble in outlying lands, his personal grudge against Valiant for revealing he betrayed Camelot spilling over to Arthur himself. His reasons for being concerned with whether he will be a strong commander increase when an attack in a searched tavern sees an injured Denys captured by Mordred's men, led by Owen. And it seems that someone from Camelot is a traitor...

Cynan hires Glyndyn, a former student of Merlin's, to drug Dylan so he will be comatose and mistaken for dead even by Merlin, and has a henchman approach Camelot claiming to witness Valiant, whom Dylan has captured, kill him. Denys is invited to see Cynan and, with Merlin, goes only to return Dylan's body. Cynan plans to have Dylan actually kill Valiant when he receives the antidote for the potion he took. And he not only succeeds in causing Denys doubt in his friend's innocence, but causing Valiant doubt over whether Denys has now chosen to stand with his family.

While King Arthur and some of the knights are meeting with Lot of Lothien, a former rival, to form an alliance, one of their soldiers is wounded by Saxon invaders but they are unaware that there is treachery closer by. Merlin is attacked in Camelot by a member of a mysterious order which he says means to kill King Arthur. Merlin, Valiant, and Denys go to warn him and deliver Excalibur. Along the way, Merlin tells them that the group, the Black Rose, were enemies of King Arthur's family years before, and explains how Arthur ascended to the throne.

Valiant and Denys visit Cassington, which harbors an unknown flutist who enchants the court with a soulful song, and whose king, Donnvan, is famous for keeping peace. But while there, they learn a dark secret. They are appalled to hear that Donovan relentlessly beats his young son Henry whenever he fails at something, and attempt to make him realize the immorality of his deeds. But the relationship between Donovan and Henry may already be too damaged to fix.

Valiant is offered the position of sheriff of Hammerscape shortly before a Moorish pirate fleet ransacks a neighboring village. Arn sends Bryant while calling Gawain and his troops, but Bryant arrives not knowing to carry a torch just before Hammerscape is attacked. Valiant, Rowanne, and the troops succeed in defending the village, but the pompous lord mayor, Murdoch, accuses Bryant as a spy because of the attack's timing and the fact that he is also a Moor. Valiant, forced to uphold the law by giving a trial if only to prove his friend's innocence, and Rowanne and Arn, defending him, learn that the villagers are just as prejudiced. Things take a turn for the worse when the pirate captain Solandre, Bryant's former friend exiled as a traitor, is called to witness and lies that Bryant is in league with him. Valiant must think of a plan to prove the testimony false so Bryant's name will be cleared, but doesn't know the pirates have a real spy in the village.

While on a mission, Valiant encounters Lorn, Thule's former battle-master and his former tutor, and invites him to Camelot where he manages to give him his desired position of strategist once more. But when Lorn goes to assist Gawain, injuries and deaths occur and Gawain blames Lorn's instruction. When Valiant arrives, Gawain is tactless, causing Valiant to defend his friend even after he can tell by the next battle that Lorn cannot now recall a military plan during fighting, and that his errors are real and costly. He must decide what is the best way to react both for Camelot and his friendship.

It is Christmas Eve but most of Camelot's knights and soldiers including Valiant, Arn, and Rowanne are forced to spend it assisting North Gallis' king, Weldon, in an age-old battle. Valiant tries to explain to Prince Thomas, how Camelot, once in a similar state, was unified through the ideals of justice and peace, but the two countries' desire for control of the land and a mysterious relic within it leaves much doubt that there will ever be an end to the destruction and lives lost. When King Weldon falls, Valiant and Thomas must think of a way to convince the people that a ceasefire does not have to and must not be seen as only an inexperienced boy's wish.

Valiant and Rowanne travel to Serenity, the home of her cousin Carl, to help the latest of many immigrants adjust. They find that these are isolated and even persecuted by anonymous troublemakers the two fight off, locals have fallen on hard times - and someone is promoting the "New Dawn", a corruption of the New Order. While its fighters attack Valiant for inquiring about them, Rowanne starts to wonder whether the New Dawn Carl respects might help him since he seems desperate. Then the two learn that Lord Maldon, alive but disfigured after the explosion, is assisting the movement which encourages fear of those new to the land, such as the industrious resourceful ones whose success the locals envy, and it is headed by none other than Mordred.

King Arthur sends Valiant and Gawain with a party including Arn and Rowanne near the Venecombs' land where Sir Lyman has gotten word that they wish to forge a treaty. While there, Valiant, Arn, and Rowanne gain possible evidence that someone in the nearby primitive community is plotting to assassinate King Arthur. Unable to convince those in the camp, they approach Queen Guinevere when she arrives with King Arthur the next day. She secretly lets them enter the Venecomb village undercover and learn that their former leader, now regarded among his people as a betrayer for his diplomatic ideals, has been replaced by a tyrannical one who has dark intentions. And it seems that an outsider has been encouraging and assisting him to fight.

When Valiant, Arn, and Rowanne go to assist a village who recently suffered a fire, Arn meets Harold again. But then Blake of Haven, the brother of one of the victims of the Battle of Haladin, arrives believing Harold is the man he once claimed to be. With Arn watching as a hostage to avoid help being called, he murders Harold. Arn cannot get over the grief of losing his friend and father figure, especially when Blake remains to gloat that he is still free despite Arn's vow to take him down. Arn ignores the pleas of his friends and Harold's family and sets off to kill him.

Valiant gets a new crossbow hoping he will finally have a chance against Rowanne at archery. But he leaves it behind when abruptly leaving with her to stop a runaway horse. Denys' friend Wesley, who knows how to use it, tries to instruct Denys how to - and Denys ends up shooting Arn in the shoulder. While Merlin tries to save him, Valiant has to deal with guilt and Rowanne's anger at his part in it while Denys tries to deal with his own conscience and decide what to do.

Valiant, Arn and Rowanne judge a tournament for youths from throughout Camelot to become squires to its knights. A late arrival named Fiona tells Rowanne that her pursuit of knighthood is an inspiration and Rowanne helps her enter and train. She is self-deprecating but shows surprising skill. Rowanne is soon jealous of the attention given to her by Valiant and Arn. When Fiona acts innocent only to steal a chance of enjoyment for her, Rowanne is certain that she is attempting to manipulate her way to success.
