Film Review: ‘Troop Zero’

  • Variety
Film Review: ‘Troop Zero’
You’ve probably seen a version of “Troop Zero” before. Whether that version was called “Troop Beverly Hills,” “The Mighty Ducks,” or an edited-for-tv showing of “The Bad News Bears,” it’s unlikely that anything here will be particularly fresh to anyone but the youngest of viewers. But novelty does not appear to have been high on the filmmakers’ priorities. An aggressively whimsical, ‘70s-set family comedy about a misfit group of off-brand Girl Scouts, directing duo Bert & Bertie’s crowdpleaser neither reinvents the wheel nor even attempts to redesign it all that much, but at least it gets where it wants to go, thanks in no small part to the work of Allison Janney, Viola Davis, and young actor Mckenna Grace.

Say this much for “Troop Zero,” which premiered at Sundance in 2019 and hits Amazon streaming this weekend: in spite of its relentless insistence on steering the plot exactly where you think it’s going,

‘Agt: The Champions’ interview: Boogie Storm silent on Simon Cowell’s controversial Golden Buzzer [Watch]

  • Gold Derby
In NBC’s “America’s Got Talent: The Champions” new interview with Boogie Storm (aka the “Star Wars” Storm Trooper dancers), they were given the chance to talk about Simon Cowell‘s controversial Golden Buzzer from the second episode. Unfortunately, since they’re a silent act who only communicates through dance, Boogie Storm had nothing to say about the now-viral reality TV moment. Watch their “interview” above.

SEE60% of ‘Agt’ fans say judges were right to save Ryan Niemiller on ‘Champions’ episode 2 [Poll Results]

In case you missed it, Simon broke the show’s rules in the January 13 episode when he pressed the Golden Buzzer for the dance group, as it was actually Howie Mandel‘s turn at the helm. Unlike a normal season of “America’s Got Talent” where the judges (plus host Terry Crews) can press their Golden Buzzers in any order, “Agt: The Champions” has strict rules in place that determine

‘Jeopardy! GOAT’ Finale Is Tuesday’s Top Show, But ABC Settles for Second Place in Primetime
The finale of ABC’s “Jeopardy! Greatest of All Time” was by far Tuesday’s top show — but didn’t give ABC enough of a boost to overtake NBC as the top network in primetime, according to Nielsen.

Meanwhile, The CW came in close behind Fox and Spanish-language broadcast network Univision in the key demo rankings, airing the continuation its “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover, which included the first episode of Season 5 of “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.”

NBC was first in ratings with a 1.1 rating in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and third in total viewers with an average of 5.3 million, according to preliminary numbers. At 8 p.m., “Ellen’s Game of Games” scored a 1.0/5 and 4.2 million viewers. At 9, “This Is Us” put up a 1.4/7 and 6.6 million viewers. “New Amsterdam” at 10 put up a 0.8/4 and 5 million viewers.

After 25 Years, These Are the ‘Friends’ Characters Critics Love the Most

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.

This week’s question: In honor of the 25th anniversary of “Friends,” who is your favorite character on the show? Why?

Eric Deggans (@deggans), NPR

For a TV critic with some, um, seniority, it is odd to go from covering Friends as a contemporary TV show to covering it as a nostalgia phenomenon. So my feelings about “Friends” characters have gone through an evolution. When the show started, I liked David Schwimmer’s Ross Geller the most. Hard to remember now, but he was the most established actor when the show started, particularly following a well-received guest role on “NYPD Blue,” and I felt his character on “Friends” was the most developed in the early days of the show.

Eventually, toward the end of the run, I came to like Lisa Kudrow’s Phoebe more,

‘Galaxy Quest’ Is Getting a Live Concert at Comic-Con Featuring David Newman’s Score

‘Galaxy Quest’ Is Getting a Live Concert at Comic-Con Featuring David Newman’s Score
How do you know when a movie has reached unimpeachable cult classic status? A live score rendition from the San Diego Symphony at Comic-Con is a pretty good indicator. “Galaxy Quest,” the sci-fi comedy starring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Sam Rockwell, and Tony Shalhoub will get such star treatment this summer. Composer David Newman will be on hand to conduct the world premiere event.

Directed by Dean Parisot from a script by David Howard and Robert Gordon, “Galaxy Quest” is perhaps the only Hollywood parody wrapped inside a satisfying sci-fi comedy. The movie follows a group of washed up actors best known for a “Star Trek”-like TV show who are become involved in a real intergalactic conflict after being visited by an alien race that thinks the series is an accurate documentary. The movie parodied “Star Trek” fandom as much as it did the series itself, and

Watch ‘Avengers’ Cast Answer Bizarre Character Questions on ‘Colbert’
Several cast members from the upcoming blockbuster Avengers: Endgame dropped by The Late Show to awkwardly answer some of the staff’s burning questions about their characters.

The jokey segment started relatively tame: Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) playfully noted that her real-life superpower would be “[getting] rid of all the garbage,” and Chris Evans (Captain America) revealed that the Avengers’ biggest enemy isn’t Thanos but “chafing”: “If you’ve ever run through an inter-dimensional portal wearing a skin-tight body suit, you know what I mean.”

The bit grew more surreal from there,

Jussie Smollett Arrest Stuns Hollywood Into Silence and Sorrow
Stunned silence would be one way to describe how Hollywood is processing the arrest of Jussie Smollett after authorities say he made up a racist and homophobic attack.

The normally active Twitter feeds of leading artist-activists such as Ava DuVernay, Judd Apatow and Matthew Cherry were quiet in the hours after Smollett’s Thursday arrest in Chicago on a felony charge of filing a false police report.

Don Lemon — the outspoken CNN anchor who like Smollett is both gay and African-American — grasped for words on his newscast on Wednesday night. “It’s … terrible,” he managed to say.

Jussie Smollett's Inspiring Story Gets Complicated: Inside His Road to Empire

Jussie Smollett's Inspiring Story Gets Complicated: Inside His Road to Empire
Jussie Smollett almost packed it in at 13. The actor, who had a memorable breakout role in 1992's The Mighty Ducks and two years later starred in the sitcom On Our Own (think Party of Five, but funny) with his five real-life siblings, traded in show business for a normal-kid life after the ABC show's first and only season. As much as was possible in his family. "You put on shows—we had a whole damn production, because we had all these kids," Smollett, the third-eldest, remembered the acts he'd put together with his three brothers and two sisters (including Friday Night Lights and True Blood star Jurnee Smollett-Bell), talking...
