The power of truth, the power of one simple woman!
Peter_Young19 August 2009
The great Rajkumar Santoshi delivers "Damini", a powerful, gripping and hauntingly fascinating picture which can be rightfully called a great relief at a time when most Hindi films were poorly written. This is the story of a young girl who marries into a wealthy family. One day, during the Holi festival she witnesses a horrifying incident of her brother in-law gang-raping the housemaid Umi along with his friends. She cannot get into the closed room, and seeks help from her husband, but the two are too late. When the police comes to interrogate Damini about the physically and emotionally ravaged Umi who lies in hospital, Damini, despite all the pressure coming from her in-laws and her own husband, says the entire truth, and that's how this is taken to court. The story narrates the nightmare Damini goes through only because she is decisively stuck by her stand.

Amazingly scripted and aptly executed, Damini shocks you with its unpredictable proceedings and its disturbing and brutally honest portrayal of rape, injustice and social ignorance, without overdoing any scene in this regard. Its main goal, however, is not to portray the society as bad or unfair, but to show the power of one, and in this case, the power of one simple yet strong woman who has nothing but her truth, and who is ready to face the entire world if necessary to go with this very truth. The film is aided by pleasant music, brilliant dialogues, good editing, effective cinematography, but what makes it stand out is of course Rajkumar Santoshi's fantastic direction. Santoshi pulls this project off and delivers a product that is laden with intensity, suspense and entertainment value. He pays attention to details and extracts first-rate performances from his actors and from Meenakshi Sheshadri in particular.

Meenakshi Sheshadri, in a role of a lifetime, acts like never before. An actress who was limited to insignificant roles of the wife and the love interest in mindless action films, she is simply outstanding as Damini. She is compelling, intense and very convincing throughout the film. I also liked the "nervous breakdown" dance number she did, like the one of Sridevi in Lamhe. This is an exceptional performance. The only other actor who stands out in a big way is Sunny Deol, whose character of the good lawyer comes as a great relief. This is one of his greatest performances. Other cast members include Rishi Kapoor, who makes no impact as 'the husband', Kulbhushan Kharbanda who is good as Rishi Kapoor's father, and Amrish Puri who is as brilliant as always as the corrupted lawyer. Damini is an incredibly interesting, disturbing and ultimately inspiring piece which should not be missed by anyone.

Wonderful depiction of reality!!!!!!
mharishkashyap2 November 2009
Damini can be summarized as the hallmark of 4 people - Meenakshi Sheshadri, Sunny Deol, Amrish Puri and of course, Rajkumar Santoshi. All of them are at their exhilarating best in this movie. Not many movies have given such ample scope to an actress in India. Meenakshi Sheshadri does a fabulous job in this.

Rajkumar Santoshi has done realistic and hard-hitting movies, this tops them all. If you thought Ghayal was wonderful, this is terrific. He continued the same trend with Ghatak. They Sunny Deol-Rajkumar Santoshi is the Indian version of Martin Scorsese-Robert DeNiro.

Amrish Puri is another deserving mention. No actor can portray a villainous role better than Puri saab. He excels here as the scheming and "partially-deaf" lawyer, Inderjeet Chaddha who has a habit of swaying his hair.

All the supporting cast were wonderful. I have always hated Rishi Kapoor as an actor (mainly because of those white pants, white shoes and dhol songs) apart from Bobby. But this is one movie in which he brings the depth and range of a Kapoor. Kulbhushan Kharbanda has always been a fantastic, but underrated actor. In fact, he has been underutilized even in this movie. Tinnu Anand is an excellent supporting act. Not to forget, the Hari Kaka has also done a good job (the final frozen shot of the movie).

I have kept this section for last deliberately - Sunny Paaji's National Award winning performance. Everyone knows Sunny Paaji's best performances have been in Rajkumar Santoshi's movies, but this performance can be talked only in superlative terms. As the drunk, disinterested yet smart lawyer, he delivers the performance of his life. Even if you are not a Sunny Deol fan, you will certainly become one after watching this. If you started watching Sunny Deol movies with movies like "Indian", "Jaal", etc, you have got a wrong start. Start with Ghayal, Damini and Ghatak.

A must watch movie, if you watch movies very closely for their depth and reality. My rating: 8/10.

One of Sunny Deol's best roles ever, I am full of praise for this movie. It is a social movie that deals with injustice in society, and how one lady fights it at all costs, being helped by a lawyer and her husband alone. The dialogues are impressive-TAREEKH PAR TAREEKH,DHAI KILO KA HAATH,CHIDIYAGHAR,etc.

Rishi Kapoor does an impressive job.His emotions are expressed well. Meenakshi's good as the protagonist.

The concept is good. Songs are melodious. Some fight sequences are there, which aren't bad.

Sunny's best as a prosecution lawyer,Amrish is tooo good as the villain. Though nearly 3 hours long, the film is enjoyable. Watch it.

Excellent!
Asbohra26 March 2007
Damini gets a 10/10, mainly thanks to Sunny Deol in the 2nd half. He was brilliant as the drunk and clever lawyer. See how he tells of the main baddie, Amrish Puri. The confrontation scenes between them are definitely worth watching repeatedly. Sunny won National Award for this. The dialogues are so witty, and the manner in which Sunny says them is humorous. Even his outburst in court is excellent, especially "Tarikh Pe Tarikh." I also like the phrase, "Judge order order karta hain aur tu pidtha rahega!" that uses against Amrish Puri (corrupt lawyer). Their confrontation scenes are immensely watchable. Sunny overshadows everyone else with an awesome performance, as he is the saving grace because his introduction after intermission takes the movie to a new level. He even bashes the baddies at the very end. If you ever watch this movie, do it for Sunny Deol. Enjoy!

The lightning of conscience
jmathur_swayamprabha11 July 2011
Rape is that heinous crime in which the culprit escapes punishment due to the social structure as well as the law being heavily tilted in his favour and the victim, i.e., the raped woman has no option but to swallow her tears and live her life with the unhealable wounds on her heart and soul. Mostly, such cases are either not registered or aborted before reaching the court. And even when any such case reaches the court of justice, the defendant's lawyer takes the advantage of the legal loopholes and save his client for whom the acquittal proves to be a moral booster to repeat the crime with someone else. Damini is a movie which deals with this issue with utmost gravity and sincerity.

There is one apex court above all the worldly courts, the court of conscience which no criminal or anybody aiding and abetting him can escape. Where all the worldly courts fail in their job, the court of conscience takes the charge. Though in today's world, hardcore criminals have buried their conscience also deep down the earth, never allowing it to surface agai; nevertheless conscience plays its role at least for those who are not tainted themselves but don't raise their voice due to the fear of social obloquy or blood relations with the culprits. This fact is emphatically brought to fore in the climax of Damini (lightning).

Damini (1993) starts with the love of Rishi Kapoor as Shekhar and Meenakshi Sheshadri being in the title role. Shekhar is the eldest son of a rich business house whereas Damini is from an ordinary family. Damini who is trying to adjust herself to the hostile environment in the family is stunned to see the maid being raped by her brother-in-law and his friends. She could not save her honour but then she makes up her mind to make her get justice. Quite naturally, she finds herself all alone in this compaign with all her in-laws going against her and her loving husband preferring to be the silent spectator to their activities in the name of the family's honour.

Situation gets from bad to worse for Damini when the maid is killed in the hospital, the crooked lawyer (Amrish Puri) hired by her in-laws proves her as insane in the court so that her testimony is not taken into cognizance by the court and even the sympathetic police inspector (Vijayendra Ghatge) also proves himself to be greedy of tangible beneifts instead of doing his duty diligently to ensure justice to the victim. Imprisoned in an asylum, everything seems to be bleak for her. But when she is able to escape from it, fortune make her cross path with another desperate person Govind (Sunny Deol) who, despite being a laywer, could not get justice when his wife was killed in a hit and run accident and is now trying to find solace in alcohol. In Damini's relentless quest for justice, Govind also gets a purpose for living. However since the criminals are too strong to allow any evidence against to survive, finally justice is ensured when the slept conscience of Shekhar awakens and the failure of worldly court is overshadowed by the victory of the court of Shekhar's conscience.

A hard-hitting movie, Damini is thoroughly impressive and keeps the viewer hooked throughout. It's an intense movie with only the songs providing some relief in between. The biggest credit for making this movie a success goes to its director Rajkumar Santoshi who has rendered utmost reality to the narrative sans the court-room scenes (especially those involving Sunny Deol). The theatricals in the court-room are the only unreal thing shown in the movie because nowhere in India (and the world too), such kind of rhetoric and shouting is allowed by the judges. Otherwise, the A class direction of Santoshi has kept the narrative not only engrossing but also hitting the conscience of the viewers at the appropriate places with appropriate force. Santoshi has crafted each and every scene with the finesse of a devoted artist. A very well made movie indeed.

Rajkumar Santoshi is said to have been in love with the heroine, Meenakshi Sheshadri (who is said to have turned down his proposal). May be due to this personal reason or otherwise, Santoshi gave the role of a lifetime and she excelled like anything. Obese Rishi Kapoor alongwith Amrish Puri and the supporting cast has done well. But it's Sunny Deol who remains with the audience after the movie is over. His over-the-top but very very effective performance make him win the national award for the best actor and his dialogues are still remembered by the people. He is brilliant not only in action and dialogue-delivery but also expressing his anguish and frustration through his gestures.

Technically the movie is A class. The length is quite OK and the production value is high. Dialogues (despite the rhetoric and the over-dramatic tone) are just like hitting the nail right on its head. Nadeem-Shravan's music is good with the beautiful lyrics having been penned by Sameer.

I recommend this socially relevant and eye-opening movie to all those who like meaningful cinema and who believe that the voice of your conscience cannot be suppressed or ignored forever.

Absolutely brilliant !!!!
Maz-1112 March 1999
Once in a while you see a film which you really enjoy and believe me, this is a film which everybody will enjoy. The plot isn't exactly original but it more than makes up for that in the cast assembled. The film stars Meenakshi Sheshadri, Rishi Kapoor, Sunny Deol, Kulbashan Kharbanda, Paresh Rawal and Amrish Puri. The director, Rajkumar Santoshi has assembled a great cast and there are some really powerful emotive scenes in the film. There is no doubt though who the star of the film is: Amrish Puri gives an absolutely epic performance as the corrupt barrister Indrajeet Chaddha. Some of his scenes are unbelieveable. Overall, this is one of those films which you can watch in front of the family. There are a couple of dodgy scenes, but nothing too powerful. I thoroughly recommend this film to everyone.

Important film in the career of Meenaskshi Sheshadri
Vivekmaru454 July 2010
Damini Gupta (Meenaskshi Sheshadri) who comes from a middle-class family is seen by Shekhar, the son of wealthy Mr. Gupta, when he goes to a small hill-station town. He is captivated by her beauty and falls in love with her. Shekhar brings his father to meet Damini and her dad who is a post-master named Chandrakant. Mr. Gupta is charmed by the simple beauty and outright honesty of Damini, and they finalize Shekhar's and Damini's marriage, which is celebrated with great pomp and ceremony.

On day during the Indian festival of Holi, Damini catches Shekhar's brother called Rakesh and some of his friends in the act of molesting a maid servant and calls in aid of her husband. However they are to late. Rakesh makes off with the maid servant in a van.

Then the Gupta family conspire to cover-up this shameful incident. But Damini is unable to get this incident out of her mind, and finally decides to inform the police. She does so, and is instantly shunned by the Gupta family, and asked to leave the house. The police arrest Rakesh and three of his friends, and the matter is taken up in court, and Damini is asked to testify. Damini is portrayed by the Gupta family's lawyer, Indrajit Chhadha, as a mentally unstable person, with everyone from the Gupta family to her very own dad testifying to that effect. Damini is confined in an mental institution for two weeks by a judicial order. Mr. Gupta bribes the warden of the institution into permanently making Damini mad so that she is no longer a threat to Rakesh. And so Damini is made mad by shock treatment.

Meanwhile, Rakesh is scared that if Damini regained her senses she would be able to put him behind bars. Also seeing that Damini has no longer use of her mental faculties he would also be able to indulge himself with her. He plans to take her from the institution by making a deal with the warden.

During that fateful day, Damini who is gazing outside of her cell, witnesses an event that restores her mental faculties.

She barely manages to escape and runs being into a down-and-out alcoholic lawyer by the name of Govind (Sunny Deol) while being pursued by Rakesh and his friends. Govind is more than a match for Rakesh and his friends and scares them off.

Govind was a lawyer who gave up law when he failed to get justice for his wife who was killed in a hit and run accident. He does not believe in the justice system, but Damini's courage boosts him. He re-opens the rape case and starts his crusade against Mr. Gupta and family.

Will Govind succeed? Will Damini be united with her husband? Watch this blockbuster film by acclaimed director Raj Kumar Santoshi.

Powerful
shyambohra20 April 2015
Powerful acting. Even Sunny Deol in the second half rocks with 'taarik pe taarik' and my favorite 'dhai kilo ka haath' dialogues. His act as a drunk lawyer is brilliant. If more Indians watch this, crime and corruption would go down. Great movie, especially with Sunny. Amrish Puri makes a great villain, although he is humorous at times as the corrupt lawyer named Chadda (what a name)! Anyways, the point is to take the stand for what is right. Speak out people! It is your right, and nobody can ever take that away from you. I would watch this for Sunny Deol, as he is my favorite action star. A movie like this is really thought-provoking and meaningful.

Too many issues to overlook
krishnan357-33-7825794 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I was really looking forward to this movie because of the rating, Sunny Deol's National Award and because it was hailed as a feminist movie.

Unfortunately, it was way too unrealistic and melodramatic. I liked that fact that Rishi Kapoor played a seemingly morally ambiguous character, but overall, he just came off as weak to me. And eventually, he just comes around which was very predictable.

You also had Amrish Puri hamming it up as a defense attorney as he can. He was good apart from the fact that it lacked any subtlety. The scene where he parades fake suspects in court wouldn't happen in a million years (at least I don't think so). The judge has practically no control over proceedings.

I felt Lajja from the same director was a better female centric film. The difficulties Damini had in reaching the court at the end was a bit silly as well considering the publicity the case received. It couldn't have been that difficult to have a team of people with her to prevent any attacks. And I'm not sure how the judge could decide to sentence people who were not even on trial.

Sunny Deol was also quite over the top, but his dialogues were effective.

Overall, a disappointing experience.

The strength of a traditional Indian woman against her society and culture.
ummul_mazlumin10 December 2005
The movie is about how one day Damini sees her brother-in-law and his friends raping the servant-maid who works at their home. Her conscience tells her to take her brother-in-law and his friends to court, but she has her entire family, in-laws, and even her husband in her way. The story is about the strength of a traditional Indian woman against her society and her culture. The acting is fantastic. If there was one Indian movie I had to suggest the entire world to watch, it would be this movie. But this is not a movie to take young children to. There are some very forceful scenes in the movie that are too much for children.

RKS's second hit
silvan-desouza5 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Rajkumar Santoshi who brought back Sunny Deol from his doomed phase with GHAYAL(1990) which was a surprise hit, brought him back yet again with DAMINI(1993). In between Sunny's most films were either flops or average but his great comeback was Damini. The film is remembered as a Sunny Deol film though he was a guest appearance. The main story focuses on Rishi Kapoor and Meenaxi, it has a strong plot of a women standing against others to prove justice. The film starts off on a routine note with songs and dance, with a cameo by Aamir Khan(who was working with RKS that time on Andaz Apna Apna which was delayed) but makes a strong impact after the rape scene. The subsequent scenes are well handled, though it maybe a bit too loud and over-dramatic(like in 90s movies) but yet there are some powerful scenes, Sunny's entry is well executed and thereon the film leaves a strong impact, though the court scenes are OTT but there are some powerful dialogues which are remembered even today, Taareeq pe Taareeq is still remembered, though the climax does tend to get preechy and overmelodramatic. There are other flaws too like Sunny's one man army which does tend to get a bit too much Direction by RKS is good Music by Nadeem Shravan is awesome, most songs sung by Kumar Sanu Gawah Hai and Jabse are the best ones

Rishi Kapoor looks overweight but does his job well Meenaxi is superb in her role, and proves that she can deliver the goods, rumours has it that she stopped working in films post this after she didn't get the best actress award that year and it went to Juhi for Hum Hai Raahi Pyaar Ke. Sunny Deol gets the meatiest part, this film rechristened his action image and he got the most powerful dialogues, Dhaai Kilo ka haath was christened from here, he does a good job in his role as the drunk advocate. Amongst rest Khulbushan Kharbanda does a great job in a role that has negative shades, Tinnu Anand is okay, Amrish Puri is superb in his role though he does tend to overdo Amrish Puri starred in all 3 RKS films with Sunny Deol and also in China Gate(1998) Rohini Hattangadi is as usual, Vijayendra Ghatge is good Paresh Rawal is wasted rest are okay

Film(un)fare ignored the year's best performance!
anthony_fernandes8018 November 2012
Damini was a well made film that dealt with a woman's lone battle against a male dominated society to get justice for a rape victim. The film had some very powerful sequences in the second half, with Sunny Deol taking control. The film is remembered for its screenplay and direction and excellent performances from 3 actors,Meenakshi Seshadri, Sunny Deol and Amrish Puri. Director Rajkumar Santoshi combined a socially relevant subject with commercial ingredients to deliver one of the best films of the year.

Sunny Deol was easily the scene stealer. Although Rishi Kapoor was the main lead, he walked away with several awards, including the National award. Amrish Puri delivered a memorable depiction of the corrupt lawyer, Chadda. Rishi Kapoor was just about okay. Nadeem-Shravan came up with an average musical score. Meenakshi and Aamir Khan's pairing in the song Bin Saajan Jhoola Jhulu was refreshing.

Meenakshi Seshadri gave Damini everything she had and she truly shone in a performance of a lifetime. All who watched this film knew that the best actress trophy belonged to no one else in 1993, but her. She portrayed the role of Damini Gupta with complete conviction. Honestly, how Juhi Chawla won for Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke over Meenakshi in Damini, is a mystery that remains unsolved till date. I have lost all respect for Filmfare ever since!

The power of a common woman and her honesty
Chrysanthepop1 October 2007
In my opinion 'Damini' is Rajkumar Santoshi's best work to date. Meenakshi Sheshadri gives a powerful and flawless performance in what can be described as a role of a lifetime, a part every actress would only dream for. However, the actress decided to call it quits because, rumour had it, she didn't win the best actress award. She only did a handful of films to keep up with her other commitments.

Damini is a simple honest young lady who lives with her poor parents and sister. To save her parents from misery, Damini's elder sister elopes with an alcoholic. A wealthy businessman Shekhar sets his eyes on Damini and falls in love. The two get married but Damini's in-laws keep their distant. A lonely Damini develops a close relationship with the young housemaid Urmi. During the holi festival, the whole household celebrate the colour and music with visitors. Damini's brother-in-law and his three friends gang-rape Urmi. A helpless Damini witnesses the horror and she desperately seeks help from Shekhar. But they're too late and Damini faints from the shock. Shekhar's brother and co dump Urmi's ravaged body in the gutter. When Damini is conscious, she wonders about Urmi and Shekhar assures her that Urmi's fine and receiving medical attention in the hospital but suddenly the police arrive and want to interrogate Damini. Shekhar begs Damini to 'lie' for the sake of the family honour. But Damini never lied in her life...

Definitely an innovative screenplay and Santoshi deserves full marks as a director especially for the way he builds up the tension without going over the top (in most cases). However, the courtroom sequences tend to be a little too dramatic.

There are very few songs but they provide a nice break and are melodious and pleasant.

Rishi Kapoor does well in a role with shades of gray. Same goes for Kulbushan Kharbanda. In a very brief role, Sunny Deol too is good (though he should have tried not to be too loud). Amrish Puri does well but his character is slightly caricatured. Ditto for Paresh Rawal.

But, 'Damini' is a one woman show and it rests entirely on Meenakshi Sheshadri's powerful performance. The actress is amazing and she finally gets a role that does full justice to her immense talent. Known to be one of the finest dancers (and yes, here too she dances with grace and energy), with 'Damini' she's proved to be one of the finest actresses of India. It would have been easy for an actress to mess up the role but Sheshadri portrays Damini's strength and vulnerability through her innocence and sincerity with gusto.

'Damini' is also a socially relevant film about the power of one. How the power of one voice can make a difference, how honesty is always best policy (as the truth shall prevail), to do what's right and always fight against injustice.

Meenakshi is simply too good
eureqa24 December 2006
First things first, a great movie. Not because it boasts of an original story -- in fact the story is quite predictable -- but because of the characterisations, the performances and the dialogues. The movie is essentially about the trials and tribulations of Damini Gupta (Meenakshi Seshadri), a witness to an incident of rape involving her own in-laws, and how she fights for justice and emerges victorious against all the odds. Damini is special because of an out-of-the-world performance by Meenakshi. As a naive but honest woman, who is pushed too far, she makes a remarkable impact. Sunny Deol, in a crowd pleasing role he also pitches in with a good performance) and some powerful dialogues, may have walked away with all the credit but this movie is a Meenakshi vehicle and there are no two ways about it. She deserved more credit for the same. It is difficult to digest that Juhi Chawla won the best actress award that year for her role (???) in "Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke," while Meenakshi's performance went unnoticed. But deserving people rarely get awarded in Bollywood. Anyways, three cheers to your performance Meenakshi.

Phenomenal

Review By Kamal K

Dare to lift the Social Issue in this Manner via a fictional movie by Rajkumar Santoshi is incredible. Although it was Meenakshi Seshadri's best Performance but Sunny Deol snatched all the charm in this movie. Actors like Late Rishi Kapoor, Legendary Late Amrish Puri, Paresh Rawal & Kulbhushan Kharbanda had done marvellous job.

Others like Rohini Hatgande and Tinu Anand, Viju Khote, Vijayendra Ghatge also done well.

Overall a phenomenol movie.

Truly one of Rajkumar Santoshi's movies.
santoshini90829 March 2010
Rajkumar Santhoshi has proved himself that he can be best director for ever.Really one of best social movies directed in India. The movie has a good social message.Sadly this movie has been not awarded National Award for Best feature film in India. A perfect direction with fantastic dialogues.Although Rajkumar Santoshi has made comedy movies this one is best forever.Exact direction and writing is best ever seen in Indian movies. I want Rajkumar Santoshi to make a fantastic drama like this again with fantastic dialogues. Rajkumar Santoshi has given a female performance to be ever remembered in Indian Cinema.Really a movie to be remembered forever.

Sunny Deol and Meenakshi's best role.
rahul-lucky30 December 2020
Never ever would you see Sunny Deol delivering such an amazing performance. His dialogue delivery as a drunkard as well as a lawyer is the main USP of the movie. Meenakshi is just brilliant in the movie. Her acting and expression are heart touching and melts your heart. Amrish Puri role is surely a landmark in his career. His hair style and dialogues surely boil your blood.

We Are Like That Only. ♦ 80%
nairtejas6 November 2013
It is as jaw-dropping and eye-opening as it is aesthetically & cinematically beautiful. With unarguably one of the most famous dialog delivery, by Sunny Deol, Damini is Bollywood's best outcome of the 90s about social subjects. "Aakrosh" was another.

With splendid performances by Meenakshi Seshadri, Sunny Deol & Rishi Kapoor, the plot is in two parts: the initial drama and the courtroom drama of which the latter is an ultimate entertainer. Talking through the perspectives of many persons, the film focuses on Damini's view on how social factors should be rightfully carried & pondered about. She stands for the truth and believes, as Gandhiji did, that the court of conscience is greater.

Running for 160 minutes, Damini never bores, in fact it asks us a question: WHY ARE WE LIKE THIS? Buying witnesses, using money to clear crime and why are women still considered lower to men? By the end, we just sit and stay baffled at us for being the way we are. A trend- setting flick.

BOTTOM LINE: Every person should at least watch this once and I promise it won't disappoint.

Vulgarity: Strong | Sex/Porn: No; implied | Nudity: Very Mild | Violence/Gore: Strong | Smoking: Mediocre | Alcohol: Strong | Drugs: No

Story is always superior! Fabulous movie!
valyriansteel-6834923 January 2022
This is one example where plot takes precedence over a star's screen time. Firstly, hats off to the Director Rajkumar Santhoshi - phenomenal movie in the 90s. Meenakshi is fantastic as Damini. Great spirit shown my Sunny Deol and Rishi Kapoor for taking up character roles. You get Goosebumps hearing Sunny Deol voice in the courtroom scenes. Last but not the least the great Amrish Puri - another evil character.

I am enjoying this very much

Warning: Spoilers
Centered on a girl named Damini, who witnesses the rape of her housewife in her husband's home. It's up to her to do justice by bringing her perpetrators to court or to care about the family's reputation. Stellar performances by Meenakshi, Sunny, Rishi and Amrish Puri. This is a good movie that raises awareness on the subject of rape which is a taboo topic.

Sunny Deol stole the show...

Damini review :

Rajkumar Santoshi's follow-up to his super hit debut Ghayal (1990) was a social drama revolving around justice for a poor rape victim. Meenakshi Seshadri in the titular role, delivered her career best performance. But the real scene stealer of Damini turned out to be Sunny Deol, collaborating with Santoshi again, who appears only in the movie's second half.

With brillant punchlines like "Yeh dhaai kilo ka haath jab kisipe padta hai, toh aadmi uthta nahin, uth jaata hai" and "Aisa jhatka lagega ki tu jhatakna bhul jaayega", Sunny Deol played to the gallery as the alcoholic lawyer and the audience loved him so much that at Bandra Talkies, the current booking counters would remain open even after interval as public would come to watch the film post interval just for Sunny Deol.

Indeed, he overshadowed all others including Meenakshi herself whom I simply loved in this film. Her transition from a coy subdued middle class girl to a lady crusader in the end was so very convincing and effective. She was just perfect!! Amrish Puri as the corrupt lawyer was another great character. "Main Inderjeet Chaddha kabhi shikast nahi khaata" delivered a solid punch. Rishi Kapoor got a bit shortchanged as his character appears confused for most time and who ditches his righteous wife making the person somewhat negative. Tinnu Anand and Paresh Rawal left a mark even in small roles.

Undoubtedly, Damini is one of the finest films made by Santoshi which handles the sensitive issue of rape without titillating or trivialising it. This is truly responsible and still relevant cinema worth your time!!

Regards, Sumeet Nadkarni.
