John Grisham's second novel, The Firm, was so popular that a film adaptation was already hotly anticipated by the time the book hit the shelves. In 1993, Sydney Pollack's feature adaptation was released, and combined with the success of the book, the two created a mutually massive hit, which soared on the screen as much as it did on the page. The Firm stars Tom Cruise as young hotshot attorney Mitch McDeere. Mitch begins working at a law firm in Memphis, Tennessee with Gene Hackman's Avery as his mentor. The dynamite combo of seeing Cruise at his peak powers between Top Gun and the first Mission: Impossible acting against the legendary Hackman is enough to make this movie worth watching, but the ensemble cast sprawled throughout the cat-and-mouse game that is The Firm leaves it even more exciting.

“Live with Kelly and Mark” will celebrate the Oscars with the annual “After the Oscars” episode, airing Monday, March 11. In celebration of the highly anticipated show, hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos are seen parodying the AMC Theatres feature starring Nicole Kidman, which appears before the start of every movie shown at the movie chain.
In the clip, Ripa can be seen dressed in similar attire to what is worn by Kidman, along with a near step-by-step replication of Kidman from the hair, the dialogue and the scenery. The only difference is that instead of the AMC logo, it is a “Live” interpretation, as shown throughout.
“We come to this place for magic. We come to Live theaters to laugh, to cry, to care because we need that, all of us. That indescribable feeling that we get when the lights begin to dim,” says Ripa at the start of the clip,...

The last American movie star. The savior of cinema. Maverick. There are plenty of superlatives thrown around Tom Cruise these days—including by us—and for good reason. In an era where audiences increasingly only venture to the theater for familiar intellectual property (if at all), Tom Cruise remains one of the last old school marquee names people turn out for in order to watch the actor.
And more often than not, they’re justified in that trust, because Cruise has spent his middle-age proving that like his most popular alter-ego—Navy pilot Pete Mitchell—he has no intention of turning in his wings. It’s a common observation to even note that the Mission: Impossible movies Cruise made in his 50s were better than the ones he made in his 30s, and his dedication to in-camera stunts in those films, as well as Top Gun: Maverick, have increasingly resembled...

A New Year means lots of removals from Netflix and January 1st is looking busy, with over 100 movies set to leave the service already. Below, we’ll be keeping track of all the Netflix departures for the first month of 2024.
First, a few housekeeping notes as to how Netflix removals work before we dive in. Due to licensing agreements, shows and movies added to Netflix aren’t added forever. Instead, they’re essentially rented for a fixed period. All the shows below have their current window on Netflix ending and will likely be bound for a rival streaming service.
We list titles slightly differently from other outlets, with our listings being the actual day of removal. If you want to watch any titles scheduled to expire on January 1st, for example, you’ll need to watch by the end of December 31st.

Cinematographer Mikael Salomon says he was at one point hired to direct The Mask of Zorro and had considered having Tom Cruise cast as that film's main protagonist.
In a /Film interview, Salomon reveals that 1998's The Mask of Zorro had several A-list actors considered for the lead role before Antonio Banderas took the part. This insider news was well overdue but revealed in time for the film's 25th anniversary, which marks The Mask of Zorro's theatrical release but doesn't account for its lengthy development and production history. Salomon said he was briefly hired in 1993 to direct the film and discovered that Steven Spielberg wanted Tom Cruise as Zorro, which almost happened if the actor didn't decline the offer.
Related Antonio Banderas Would Do Zorro 3 to Pass the Mask to Someone New Antonio Banderas says he would play the masked vigilante, Zorro, one more time if his character passes the mask to a successor.

1993 was a watershed year for cinema, with a wide range of movies that appealed to all audience types, revolutionizing how audiences watched films. The diversity of popular and niche films in 1993 was unmatched, with blockbusters like Jurassic Park and intellectually substantive films like Schindler's List both doing well at the box office. While other years in the 1990s had their standout movies, none could compare to the depth and ground-breaking achievements of 1993, making it the best year ever for movies.
While the entirety of the 1990s was an incredible, ground-breaking time for movies, 1993 stands out, not just as the best year for films that decade — but potentially as the best year for movies ever. The era of the modern blockbuster began to take shape in the 1980s, but the highest-grossing movies of the 1990s were revolutionary when it came to what films would look like for the next 30 years. Plenty of haunted, Halloween and holiday options will crop up on Netflix in the month of October. The harvest doesn’t seem too lean despite the almost five-month writers strike that viewers are sure to feel next year, but at least the WGA and AMPTP have reached a deal, and hopefully, SAG-AFTRA is not too far behind. Luckily, Halloween and fall have a classic canon of films and TV shows that stretches back decades, and some of those staple watches will be available through Netflix throughout the month.
Movies include “Casper,” “Scarface” and the first two “The Amazing Spider-Man” films. New arrivals worth the wait include Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” starring Zendaya and Timotheé Chalamet among other heavy hitters, “Fair Play” with Phoebe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich and David Yates’ “Pain Hustlers” starring Emily Blunt and Chris Evans. There’s a lot to watch on Prime Video in October and, as you may have guessed, there’s spooky stuff galore in amongst Prime’s usual rotation of extensive library content.
In the movie Totally Killer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka travels back in time to the 1980s to stop a serial killer. Then there’s Make Me Scream, a Halloween special that challenges celebrities to “a gruesome game of terror.” Renfield will also be streaming on the service for anyone who’s been dying (muahahaha!) to catch the Nic Cage Dracula film.
Outside of Prime Video’s more creepy fare, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods will debut, Upload will be back for a third season, and new film Awareness should scratch your sci-fi itch. Meanwhile, for Frasier heads – those who consider themselves utterly Frasier-pilled – all eleven seasons of the Cheers spinoff show will be streaming at the touch of a button.

There are a few standout new releases on Netflix in October, but it’s a rather quiet month on the world’s most popular streaming service otherwise!
Highlights this month include a brand-new series from Spook Master Mike Flanagan. The Fall of the House of Usher is a gothic tale loosely based on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allan Poe, and tells the story of two extremely unpleasant siblings whose family dynasty ends up going to hell in a handbasket. Before you ask: yes, Rahul Kohli is in it. That’s all that a lot of people need to know here (we’re people).
Elsewhere, Netflix is dropping a few interesting-looking docuseries, including one on football legend David Beckham. It promises to be an “intimate portrait” of Beckham, and the filmmakers were apparently granted unprecedented access to the sportsman and his family while making it.

When you think of Sundance movies, you usually think of quirky, optimistic or melodramatic coming-of-age stories. Films like “Manchester by the Sea,” “Coda” or “The Big Sick.” But the movie that spawned the most successful franchise from its Sundance debut is none of those things. In January 2004, Sundance audiences were knocked on their collective butts by “Saw,” an out-of-nowhere horror flick from two unknown Australian filmmakers.
Director James Wan and screenwriter Leigh Whannell’s “Saw” offered a deceptively simple premise of two desperate men chained together in an empty room with little idea of how they got there or how to get out.
Starring Cary Elwes and Danny Glover, Monica Potter and a pre-“Lost” Michael Emerson, “Saw” inspired a new wave of grindhouse horror, films that reveled in old-school gore and a certain Rube Goldberg mentality to the kills beyond just attractive teenagers being picked off one by one.

Although Tom Cruise is most closely associated with the action genre due to the success of Top Gun and Mission: Impossible, in the 1990s, it feels like he made it a goal to work with nearly every great filmmaker on a prestige project. Between Sydney Pollack’s The Firm, Rob Reiner’s A Few Good Men, Neil Jordan’s Interview with the Vampire, and Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut, Cruise showed a surprising amount of discretion in the risky projects that he joined. Ironically, the role that earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor was Cameron Crowe’s Jerry Maguire, which was a mainstream success and audience favorite. The film gave Cruise some of the most endearing, iconic, and hilarious moments of his entire filmography, but it wasn’t a role that was originally written with him in mind.

Colman Domingo is having a moment. The veteran actor has been nominated for two Tonys in his career, but lately it’s his on-screen work that has brought him the most attention. He won his first Emmy in 2022 for guesting on “Euphoria.” He received numerous plaudits for his role in the independent film “Zola.” And he has had additional film credits including Oscar winners “If Beale Street Could Talk” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Next he could become the 13th performer ever nominated for two Oscars in the same year.
As of this writing, based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users, Domingo ranks fourth in our odds for Best Actor for playing the unsung civil rights hero Bayard Rustin in “Rustin.” And he places fifth in our odds for Best Supporting Actor for playing Mister in the upcoming musical adaptation of “The Color Purple.” But we...

In a world where feature film adaptations of hit TV shows are extremely common, a film like Andrew Davis' "The Fugitive" might not look all that unusual, at least at a glance. The 30-year-old film, based on one of the highest-rated television series in history, was a "wrong man" thriller in the classic Hitchcockian mold, starring one of the industry's most successful action heroes, Harrison Ford. It's got a series of thrilling set pieces with epic stunts and derring-do. The director also wasn't a festival darling — he was a genre guy whose biggest claim to fame before "The Fugitive" was two Steven Seagal movies.
"The Fugitive" was financially successful, and even the contemporary reviews were good. But if you haven't seen it — or if you haven't seen it lately — you could be forgiven for wondering why "The Fugitive" wasn't just a hit, but was also nominated for the Academy Award...

After completing his work on the latest PG-13 installments of the Mission: Impossible franchise, Tom Cruise may be taking on a much darker role with his next project.
Now playing in theaters, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One is just the latest collaboration between Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie. Cruise previously starred as the titular character in the McQuarrie-helmed 2012 film Jack Reacher, and the two would go on to work together on four Mission: Impossible movies, including the upcoming Dead Reckoning Part Two. McQuarrie also worked as a writer on Cruise's take on The Mummy as well as last year's hit sequel Top Gun: Maverick. What all of these films have in common is a PG-13 rating, and speaking with Empire, McQuarrie says the pair will be pushing the envelope further with their next project.

For a time in the 1990s, a film adaptation of a John Grisham novel was guaranteed to turn a tidy profit at the box office, if not mushroom into a full-on blockbuster. "The Firm," "The Pelican Brief" and "The Client" all made loads of money off of a built-in audience that just had to see how the lawyer-turned-bestselling author's latest book was brought to life by Hollywood's biggest stars. Tom Cruise, Gene Hackman, Denzel Washington, Julia Roberts, Tommy Lee Jones, and Susan Sarandon, among many others, were enlisted to turn these page-turners into big-screen spectacles. They were never better than over-produced B movies, but you didn't care because the material was never more than risible. Grisham wrote disposable legal thrillers that moved fast enough to get you past their myriad implausibilities, and there was nothing wrong with this.

In the 1990s, Tom Cruise was elevated from one of the biggest movie stars in the world to Hollywood royalty when he broke an impressive box office record. Cruise is one of the last remaining movie stars who can draw an audience to watch a film at a theater based on their involvement alone, but he became the superstar he is today thanks to an impressive box office success in the 1990s.
With hits like Top Gun: Maverick and Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, Cruise is now keeping the moviegoing experience alive for another generation. Cruise has been bringing crowds into movie theaters since he first became a star in the 1980s. As his star continued to rise throughout the ‘90s, he became one of the most successful actors in Hollywood history, in no small part to this impressive box office feat that remains notable in an age...

While every decade has movies that fly under the radar, the addition of multiple streaming services in the 2010s gives us quite the list to work off of. While everyone’s favorite decade for horror is usually the ’80s or ’90s, there are far more hidden gems to find now than ever before. How a movie with a great cast, good production value, and the vaunted “based on a true story angle” was somehow successful at the box office and entirely forgotten just a little over a decade after release is just bizarre. Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie on the set of Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning – Part One from Paramount Pictures and Skydance.
On September 6, 2020, the first day of principal photography on Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Tom Cruise drove a motorbike off a mountain. Specifically, he drove a custom-made Honda Crf 250 off a purpose-built ramp on the side of Norway’s Helsetkopen mountain, a vertiginous rock face sat some 1,200 meters above sea level. Then he plunged 4,000 feet into the ravine below before opening his parachute barely 500 feet from the ground.
When he landed, director, Christopher Mc Quarrie, and the small crew of his Mission co-stars who had assembled to watch the seminal cinematic sequence from the safety of video village, breathed a collective sigh of relief. Then Cruise picked himself up and did it all again another seven times, just to make sure the footage was perfect.

Sydney Pollack was the Oscar winning filmmaker who could’ve branded himself as Hollywood’s favorite journeyman, crafting solid entertainments for over 40 years. But how many of his titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at all 20 of his films as a director, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1934, Pollack got his start as an actor, studying under legendary New York teacher Sanford Meisner. He cut his teeth is television, appearing in such shows as “The Twilight Zone,” “Playhouse 90” and “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” before transitioning into directing for the small screen. Even after making a name for himself behind the camera, he kept popping up onscreen, starring in “The Player” (1992), “Husbands and Wives” (1992), “Eyes Wide Shut” (1999), “Changing Lanes” (2002), “Michael Clayton” (2007) and his own “Tootsie” (1982), to name but a few.
It was this experience as a performer that made him a favorite with actors, including Robert Redford, with whom he made seven films.

Saw 10 continues the fan-favorite series that pits characters against one another in deadly, torturous games, and this installment has a mostly new cast. The Saw franchise tells the story of individuals who get trapped playing sadistic games run by Jigsaw and his apprentices. With nine films, one short film, two video games, and a TV show in discussion (via Deadline), Saw 10 is one of the most anticipated horror movies of 2023.
Traditionally, one cast member takes over as the new Jigsaw apprentice. In the past, Cary Elwes played Dr. Lawrence Gordon, the oncologist who misdiagnosed John Kramer (Tobin Bell) and was later recruited for the role. But he last appeared in Saw 3D: The Final Chapter, and Elwes says he's "not really involved" with Saw anymore. On the flip side, many characters have worked against Jigsaw, including Peter Straham (Scott Patterson) and Detective David Tapp (Danny Glover), who attempted to solve the murders.

Apple TV+’s “The Last Thing He Told Me,” adapted from the best-selling novel of the same name by Laura Dave, arrives 17 years after we bade farewell to Sydney Bristow, and critics agree it’s great to see Jennifer Garner on television again. Though she headlined HBO’s “Camping” and has a recurring role on Starz’s “Party Down,” this is Garner’s most solid Emmy vehicle since “Alias” earned her four nominations throughout its five-season run on ABC.
Artisanal woodworker Hannah Michaels (Garner) has worked to shield herself from unwanted surprises, but that carefully curated existence is thrown into disarray when her husband (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) vanishes amidst an FBI raid of his software startup. Josh Lucas plays a younger version of Yellowstone's John Dutton on the hit Paramount series, but here's a guide to his many other film and television credits. Lucas is the son of an ER doctor and a midwife. Instead of following his parents into medicine, the young Lucas decided to become an actor. Amid rumors of Kevin Costner leaving Yellowstone, there's been heavy speculation regarding the future of Lucas' role as the young version of Costner's character.
Indeed, though Lucas has had a long career prior to the Taylor Sheridan flagship show, he is mostly known today as the actor who plays young John Dutton. Apart from his resemblance to the Hollywood legend, Josh Lucas' performance in Yellowstone cements him as the only other actor who can actually do justice to playing the iconic rancher. While it remains unclear whether Costner is leaving Yellowstone or not, no such rumors have hounded Lucas,...

There’s surely no feeling in the world quite like winning an Oscar– that heady, unfiltered hit of professional validation that so many actors desperately crave.
But what of those who aren’t so lucky? For every Oscar winner, there must be a handful of losers, deserving or sometimes undeserving also-rans whose work was collectively deemed to have fallen short.
While actors are often skilled at disguising their disappointment – this is show business, after all – sometimes they let their real feelings slip through.
Whether it’s via side-eye glances that seem to throw shade on the winner, or simply muttering expletives, there have been many Oscar losses that prompted reactions which live on in infamy.
These aren’t the sorest losers, necessarily, but rather actors who didn’t adhere to the staid conventions of dignified loserdom.

Shah Rukh Khan just reclaimed his status as one of India’s biggest butts-in-seats draws after a four-year absence from movies.
Director Siddharth Anand’s action spectacular “Pathaan,” a loosely connected installment in India’s ongoing Yrf Spy Universe series, earned 77 million in its first week of global release. The immediate success both reaffirmed Khan’s bankability and provided a much-needed jolt to a struggling Bollywood industry.
Khan was a name synonymous with Bollywood in the 1990s and 2000s. However, as explained by film critic and pop culture journalist Siddhant Adlakha, he was known more as a romantic lead than as an action hero.
“The comparison is closer to Tom Cruise of the 1980s and 1990s,” argued Adlakha, “when he became a star through films like ‘The Firm’ and ‘Jerry Maguire,’ as opposed to the last two decades during which Cruise has primarily made action flicks like ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ and the ‘Mission: Impossible’ sequels.

The latest rumors from Marvel's Daredevil: Born Again Disney+ show suggest Marvel has learned from mistakes made during production of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Marvel Television's old Netflix TV shows met with mixed success; there were tremendous stand-outs, such as the original Daredevil TV show, but these were unfortunately tempted by disappointments like Iron Fist. Some of the casting choices have proved remarkably influential, though, with Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock and Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin making the jump into the mainstream MCU.
Cox made his triumphant return in Spider-Man: No Way Home, playing Peter Parker's "really good lawyer" - and hinting at Matt Murdock's secret identity, when he effortlessly caught a projectile tossed through a window at Spider-Man. Marvel then decided to tie one superhero lawyer in with another; Daredevil appeared in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, with the character even entering into an unlikely but...

In an alternate universe, the 1999 blockbuster The Mummy would have been fronted by Tom Cruise instead of Brendan Fraser - just how different would it have been? Cruise has become so closely linked with action movies and performing outrageous stunts, it's easy to forget he once jumped around many different genres. From Oscar-winning dramas (Rain Man) to harrowing biopics (Born On The Fourth Of July) or legal thrillers (The Firm), the actor packed a lot of variety into his filmography. Arguably the film that changed the course of Tom Cruise's career was 2000's Mission: Impossible II, which marked his transformation into a full-fledged action star.
A sliding doors moment for the actor was 1999's The Mummy, where he was approached to play dashing hero Rick O'Connell. It would have been fascinating to see Cruise step into an Indiana Jones-inspired hero, but his all-consuming schedule on Eyes Wide Shut -...

When Camerimage Film Festival founder Marek Zydowicz launched his cinematography-centered event in the fall of 1993, the film world spun on a rather different axis.
In Hollywood, star-driven dramas like “The Fugitive” and “The Firm” drove the local box office, while in Europe, auteur Krzysztof Kieślowski was right in the midst of his “Three Colors” Trilogy, an art-house high-watermark that would turn out to be the Polish filmmaker’s final artistic statement as a narrative feature film director. And across the world, throughout its various film production industries big and small, celluloid reigned supreme. To say that things have changed would be something of an understatement.
“We were kind of expecting that civilization would go in a different direction,” Zydowicz deadpans. “We could say the same for film.”
Still, as Camerimage readies its 30th edition – which will run from Nov. 12-19 in the Polish city of Toruń – organizers have never lost...
