1990s sketch series The Fast Show is hitting the road for a 30th anniversary tour around the UK, and here are the details.
When talking about British comedy in the 1990s, it is impossible to overstate the impact of The Fast Show. With a plethora of characters that have successfully stood the test of time, the series itself stands up remarkably well to repeat viewings.
Although many of the characters were well known for their catchphrases – has anybody ever been measured up for a suit in the last thirty years without being able to resist the temptation to say “suits you sir! – there was a darker edge to the writing.
A good example is Rowley Birkin, a Paul Whitehouse character who is usually played as a babbling alcoholic. The final episode of series two features an unusually restrained performance, where the audience stops laughing and are stunned into silence as...

Why do we find murder mysteries so uniquely relaxing? This is one of the age-old questions about human nature, up there with ‘what is consciousness?’ and ‘why do we keep eating mouldy cheese and fish eggs like it’s a good thing?’ Because, despite the grief and blood and mountains of paperwork that a gruesome murder causes, we simply can’t get enough of curling up on the sofa with a mug of tea and a cosy crime drama to keep us blissfully entertained all the way through to bedtime.
This isn’t a new thing, either: while modern series like Death in Paradise and Shakespeare and Hathaway are the current champions of cosy crime TV, back in the eighties and nineties classics like Murder She Wrote and Hetty Wainthropp Investigates taught us how it’s done. So whether you’re after the latest in the cosy crime genre or some more nostalgic viewing,...

Exclusive: The BBC is heading back to the Dickensian-era for its latest family comedy. The British public broadcaster has ordered Dodger from NBCUniversal International Studios.
The series is a family adventure comedy set in 1830s Dickensian London and tells the story of the Artful Dodger, the infamous pickpocket character from Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist.
The character, whose name was Jack Dawkins, is the leader of a gang of child criminals, trained by Fagin. He was described by Dickens as a “snub-nosed, flat-bowed, common-faced boy” with the “airs and manners of a man”.
The Artful Dodger has been portrayed by a slew of child actors over the years, most recently by Wilson Radjou-Pujalte in BBC period drama Dickensian.
Dodger is written by Rhys Thomas, best known for his roles in comedies including The Fast Show, Sirens and Nathan Barley, who also co-wrote spoof music doc series The Life of Rock with Brian Pern.

Lionsgate-backed comedy The Goes Wrong Show has been renewed by the BBC for a second season.
The series, produced by Mum producer Big Talk Productions and Mischief Screen, is based on the latter’s eponymous play from the team behind Peter Pan Goes Wrong and A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong.
The first season followed the Cornley Drama Society undertaking another overly ambitious endeavour, held back by prolific over-actor Robert Grove, the screen-hogging Sandra Wilkinson and the artistically mistrusted Dennis Tyde. The half-hour episodes are described as “theatrical catastrophe”.
The Goes Wrong Show is written by and stars the original founding Mischief Theatre members including Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields alongside Nancy Zamit, Charlie Russell, Bryony Corrigan, Greg Tannahill, Dave Hearn and Chris Leask. It is filmed in front of a live studio audience.
Lionsgate sells internationally in a deal similar to its arrangement for Sharon Horgan-penned Motherland.

Lupus Films is producing after striking a deal last year with HarperCollins Children’s Books to adapt the classic story by the late Judith Kerr. Joanna Harrison penned the half-hour screen transfer.
The Tiger Who Came To Tea has sold over 5M copies since it was first published in 1968. Inspired by Kerr’s daughter, the story will be adapted in Lupus’ distinctive, hand-drawn animated style and air this holiday season.

Last night the West End saw the return of one of its recent crowd pleasers, albeit in a different medium. Sandra Oh and Anne Heche beat the ever-loving crap out of each other in Onur Tukel's latest indie offering...
If you’ve only heard the briefest of things about Catfight, you’d be forgiven for imagining a sort of female version of The Fast Show’s ‘Long Big Punch Up’ and, to be fair, that wouldn’t be too far off the mark.
Turkish-American indie filmmaker Onur Tukel is back in the spotlight with this new outing, leaning into satire and away from his slightly more uncomfortable forays into horror-comedy.
While some of the director’s previous efforts, like Applesauce and Summer Of Blood, drew some extremely positive reviews, general audiences haven’t responded in kind so far, and he doesn’t make it easy for the mainstream to embrace him with Catfight, either. And you know what? Good. I may not have personally enjoyed a lot of Onur Tukel’s films,...

The brilliant Caroline Aherne has left us, at the age of just 52.
Horrible, horrible news. 2016 has now taken from us the brilliant Caroline Aherne, at the age of just 52.
Her death was confirmed yesterday by her publicist. She had been battling cancer, having being first diagnosed with the disease a couple of years back.
Where do you start? Across her career, Aherne gave us the wonderful The Mrs Merton Show, wrote and performed for The Fast Show, and - of course - created, co-wrote and co-starred in the sublime The Royle Family. Her gifts for comedy had few equals.
But you knew all of that, we're guessing. And thus you more than likely knew too that she was an incredibly gifted comedy writer and performer, whose loss is going to be keenly felt.
Our thoughts are with her friends and family at what must be such an awful time.

'The Fast Show' was the result of a ''marriage''-like writing partnership between Paul Whitehouse and Charlie Higson. The duo created the iconic comedy sketch show - which featured the likes of Mark Williams, Simon Day and John Thomson - and Charlie has claimed their contrasting skill-sets were the foundation of the programme's success. Charlie shared: ''It's the same for a writing partnership and a marriage is that you both have to be quite different. You both bring different things to it. If you both bring the same, it doesn't work.'' But while Paul formed a similarly successful writing partnership with fellow British...

He added: "I was expecting more people to complain that it wasn't scary enough, rather than people saying, 'This is a scary show and I found it scary'.
"You think, well that's slightly the point. It'd be like writing The Fast Show and someone writing in saying it is quite funny."

As Jekyll & Hyde arrives on ITV, we chatted to creator and novelist Charlie Higson about kids’ horror, VFX budgets and more…
Charlie Higson is currently a very busy man. After the press launch of ITV’s Jekyll & Hyde, he has to rush off to a VFX meeting (“If an episode’s got shit special effects in it,” he jokes, “it’ll be your fault because you kept me too long!”). Then he’s straight on to filming his second Professor Branestawm adaptation for the BBC, appearing at live events to mark The Fast Show’s twenty-first birthday, and, at the end of this month, bringing out the final instalment in his Ya horror series, The Enemy. That’s a full plate by anyone’s standards.

Incidentally, Higson is eating from a full plate as we chat, multi-tasking interviews with the consumption of a modest Jenga tower of posh chips and bijou burgers.

Jekyll And Hyde will begin on Sunday the 25th of October on ITV, starring Tom Bateman and Richard E. Grant…
The Fast Show writer and novelist Charlie Higson’s televised take on Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde has had our attention for a while.
Today we’ve learned that the show – going by the title Jekyll And Hyde - will kick off on ITV on Sunday the 25th of October. It’s in a relatively early timeslot of 6.30pm.
Tom Bateman of Da Vinci's Demons stars in the title role(s), and Richard E. Grant co-stars as the head of the secret service.
Mr Grant told us recently that “it’s about Jekyll’s grandson, and so it’s set in the 1930s. And so, Charlie Higson has taken licence to include monsters and vampires and all those genre horror elements.

The Fast Show star Charlie Higson has already tackled cult with his Young James Bond novels, and embraced horror with post-apocalyptic series The Enemy. Now, he's taking on both with ITV's new version of Jekyll and Hyde.
Tom Bateman stars as the eponymous doctor with the split-personality, in a rebooted superhero-themed adaptation taking place in 1930s London. It also stars Richard E Grant and former Coronation Street actress Natalie Gumede, and will focus on the grandson of the doctor featured in Robert Louis Stevenson's story.
Writer Higson told Digital Spy that Doctor Who's success on the BBC led to ITV searching for a monster hit (pun intended) that could prove a success overseas. He also spoke of his previous attempts to bring back the fantasy genre in the early 2000s.
"I've always wanted to do something of a heavy fantasy nature. And I tried it with Randall and...

Toby Whithouse's Under The lake is packed with references, from a 7th Doctor story through to Star Trek. Here's what we spotted...
This article contains lots and lots of spoilers for Under The Lake.
Under The Lake may not be the Dalek-filled continuity fest of the last couple of weeks, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t set our geek senses tingling. Here’s everything we were able to spot, from the obvious references to the slightly tenuous connections, from this week’s episode...
Ghosts From The Past
Under The Lake is a perfect example of what’s commonly referred to as a ‘base under siege’ story. These were a staple of the classic series, particularly during the Patrick Troughton era, not least because they meant the ever-stretched production team could save on the set budget. The first proper base-under-siege tale was William Hartnell’s final story, The Tenth Planet,...

Is ITV really going to bring back Cold Feet?
That's the rumour, with the broadcaster apparently looking to plug the Downton-shaped hole in its schedule with a revival of the popular comedy-drama.
If it's true, they'll have a job bringing the cast back together - some have gone on to be huge telly and film stars, while others have stepped out of the spotlight entirely...
James Nesbitt
Nesbitt's carefree lothario Adam Williams met his match in Helen Baxendale's Rachel - the couple overcame infidelity and infertility but were denied lasting happiness when Rachel was killed in a traffic accident.
Since Cold Feet wrapped, Nesbitt has become one of British television's most in-demand leading men.
He fronted BBC One's gritty cop series Murphy's Law from 2003-07, led Steven Moffat's supernatural thriller Jekyll - also in 2007 - and played the title character in ITV's short-lived medical drama Monroe (2011-12).

You might think you can do a decent Christopher Walken, but really, you can't touch the professionals. Here, from Kevin Spacey to Steve Coogan, are the very finest impersonators in the business (of other people in the business).
1. Kevin Spacey
Actors impersonated: Katharine Hepburn, Jimmy Stewart, Marlon Brando, Christopher Walken
To know Kevin Spacey is to know his impersonations. Willing to bust out a Brando at the drop of a hat, the former Old Vic head honcho was more than willing to obey James Lipton's commands during his appearance on Inside The Actors Studio.
Ps - there are Kevin Spacey impressions, then there are Kevin Spacey impressions in front of the people he's impersonating. Ladies and gentlemen, Al Pacino and "Al Pacino".
2. Bradley Cooper
Actors impersonated: Robert De Niro, Owen Wilson, Christopher Walken, Christian Bale

Nurse was based on the acclaimed Radio 4 series of the same name, which follows community psychiatric nurse Liz (Esther Coles).
The Fast Show's Whitehouse appeared as multiple roles including Liz's patients.
The series was made up of four 30-minute episodes and aired in March 2015 on BBC Two.

Remember Kinvig, Clone, Not With A Bang? These are the UK sci-fi sitcoms you’re unlikely to see on comedy best-of lists…
With E4 sci-fi comedy commissions, Tripped and Aliens, and in-development Channel 4 projects, Space Ark and Graham Linehan/Adam Buxton collaboration The Cloud, in the works, a new crop of sci-fi sitcom could be making its way to UK TV.
Making funny sci-fi on a small-screen budget is tough enough without the additional pressure of having to attract viewers more traditionally down-to-earth in their sitcom tastes. Sci-fi sets and effects can be seen as prohibitively expensive by comedy commissioners (which is perhaps why the best UK sci-fi sitcoms of recent years has been on BBC Radio), and the genre’s niche status doesn’t scream mainstream hit. Over the years, one or two stand-outs have managed to straddle the sci-fi and comedy TV worlds, but plenty more have stumbled in the attempt.

Guillermo del Toro's exit from Justice League Dark is the latest in a long line of films, video games and TV shows that have gotten away from the Pan's Labyrinth director.
At times, the filmmaker feels like the Hollywood equivalent of The Fast Show's Unlucky Alf - frequently attaching himself to fanboy-friendly properties before seeing them vanish into the wind. We take a look back at the multiple del Toro projects that never made it to the starting line below.
Justice League Dark
The flip side of the regular, primary colours Justice League heroes, DC Comics' Dark united such disparate characters as Deadman, Zatanna, John Constantine and Swamp Thing. Del Toro penned a script for the film but reportedly dropped out to focus on Crimson Peak and Pacific Rim 2.

Believe it or not, 2015 is half done already - and the past six months have delivered some top-notch television, much of it brand new drama, comedy and documentaries.
Picking the finest from a particularly fine crop was no easy task, but these were our rules: it had to launch in 2015, it must have aired one series / season in its entirety and it had to be a continuing series.
So no-one off pieces - e.g. Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - and nothing that got the chop - sorry, Banished.
Here - in original broadcast order - are the DS Staff Picks from the year so far.
Marvel's Agent Carter - Morgan Jeffery, TV Editor
Hopes were high for Marvel's Agent Carter - not least because fans had been clamouring for a series featuring Hayley Atwell's heroine ever since her 2013 One-Shot short film.

‘He had good reason for using overwhelming force’. You have to admire Hildur’s attempts to take control of the narrative as events twist themselves around her. Frank was naked in the shower when Dan assaulted him and gave him such a vicious beating that it’s probably possible to trace the Sheriff’s fingerprint’s in the poor guy’s bruises. Morton, as we now expect, isn’t buying it and immediately seizes control for himself. It’s a piece of narrative necessity that lends the episode pace and structure while offering the chance, in-universe, for the investigation to be done properly.

★★★★☆ Tragedy says "We all die", whilst comedy says "Ah, but life goes on". The winner of last year's Golden Lion, Roy Andersson's first feature film in seven years - the brilliantly titled existential comedy A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence (2014) - is essentially a tragi-comedy which says "We all die and life goes on". A compendium of sketches and tableaux, running jokes and even musical numbers, Andersson packs his film with thought-provoking deadpan humour: think The Fast Show, but Swedish and obviously not particularly pacey. Just to get things rolling nicely, a number of people drop dead. A corpulent man suffers a fatal heart attack while uncorking a bottle of wine (pictured below).

Birdman and Whiplash are both enhanced by their percussion-laden scores. We dig into the music of both of them...
This article contains spoilers for Birdman and Whiplash (including Whiplash's ending)
What makes a great drummer?
That's the question asked by Whiplash, which was up for Best Picture at the Oscars (although ultimately, as you more than likely know, didn't prevail). Damien Chazelle's thriller - easily the most exciting (and horrifying) account of music practice in cinema history - goes head to head with Birdman, another percussion-heavy flick. While the two share an instrument, though, their answers to that question couldn't be more different.
For Whiplash, it mostly seems to boil down to one thing: how quickly can you drum? The opening track of the album makes that clear, as we hear a snare drum banged repeatedly by Andrew (Miles Teller), faster and faster. "Can someone clean the blood off my drum kit?...

Johnny Depp channels Leslie Phillips in his latest outing, Mortdecai. But is he successful? Not really...

Harry Hill leads Charlie Higson-penned children's book adaptation, The Incredible Adventures Of Professor Branestawm...
If you’re unfamiliar with the Professor Branestawm books then let me bring you up to speed. Norman Hunter’s thirteen novels, written over a fifty-year period, chronicled the escapades of Professor Branestawm, a scatterbrained boffin who created absurd contraptions in his ‘inventory’, constantly trying the nerves of his ever-patient housekeeper, Mrs Flittersnoop. As a character, Professor Branestawm is like an adult William Brown (of Richmal Crompton’s Just William series): feckless and unpredictable except the good professor has the added trait of being mad as a bag of spanners. This Christmas, author, actor and screenwriter Charlie Higson has adapted Hunter’s novels into a family telefilm that boasts a terrifically starry cast – namely sealing down comedian Harry Hill as the eponymous scientist – and a plum positioning in the Christmas schedules. It started at the end of the summer, and now we're just days (you could even count in hours if you're really keen) away from Christmas Day. And like the arrival of Santa down the chimney, we couldn't be much more excited about the Strictly Come Dancing 2014 finale.
Caroline Flack, Simon Webbe, Frankie Bridge and Mark Wright are this year's Final 4 preparing to duke it out on the dancefloor and shake their tailfeathers until they won't shake no more for our votes.

He's the man who "invented world music" and who created the first ever music video using Plasticine. Yes, we're talking about '70s rock legend Brian Pern - the frontman of Thotch.
Ok, Brian Pern might not be real, but Simon Day and Rhys Thomas's surreal music doc spoof is so on the money, it feels like Pern and Thotch are very much the bona fide article. Is the Day of the Triffids album not on iTunes yet?
With incredible guest appearances from the likes of Roger Moore, Martin Freeman and Kathy Burke, Brian Pern: A Life in Rock is the funniest TV show on right now.
We caught up with Day and Thomas to chat about its success.
First things first, I was a huge fan of your last comedy show Bellamy's People.
Simon Day: "Oh, don't get us started on that."
Honestly, I loved it. That didn't get a second series.

ITV has ordered a new drama series based on Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and My Hyde.
Charlie Higson will provide the script and serve as executive producer on new show Jekyll & Hyde.
The series, which was previously rumoured to be in development, is set in 1930s London and focuses on Robert Jekyll, the grandson of the original Dr Jekyll.
Higson said of the project: "It's an exciting challenge to take Stevenson's work and use it as the basis for a new Jekyll & Hyde.
"So many superheroes with secret dual personalities have been brought to life thanks to Jekyll and Hyde. He's one of literatures most important and influential characters and it's a privilege to be rediscovering him."
Higson is known for his work on The Fast Show and his successful Young Bond book series.

We’ve had one trailer already for Mortdecai, which finds Johnny Depp as the anarchic aristocratic art dealer Charlie Mortdecai. That first tease was more of a comedy trailer, but this new promo blends that mayhem with more plot details and some extra action. Take a look via Yahoo. Based on the beloved novels by Kyril Bonfiglioli – namely Don't Point That Thing At Me, After You With A Pistol, Something Nasty In The Woodshed and The Great Moustache Mystery -– Mortdecai is a right royal romp of the highest order, with Depp surrounded by Paul Bettany as his valet, Jock, Gwyneth Paltrow as his wife Joanna, Ewan McGregor as an intelligence official looking to recruit Mortdecai to recover a stolen painting and Olivia Munn as a wealthy American with designs on our hero. It’s all still very Jeeves And Wooster meets The Fast Show, with Depp clearly having a...

Director: Michaël R. Roskam; Screenwriter: Dennis Lehane; Starring: Tom Hardy, James Gandolfini, Noomi Rapace; Running time: 106 mins; Certificate: 15
The Drop sees our hopes plummet to the ground with a resounding thud, squandering the brilliant Tom Hardy and much-missed James Gandolfini with a poorly contrived tale that's often alienating to watch.
Hardy plays melancholic bartender Bob Saginowski in this crime drama set in Brooklyn. We know the film really wants us to like him because he helps an old lady right at the start, goes to church to worship in the next scene, followed by rescuing a beaten puppy from a rubbish bin shortly after. Conversely, such exposed plot mechanics do little to make Bob endearing.
Before long, Bob's entangled in a friendship with Nadia (Noomi Rapace), who helped him look after the dog – but has to contend with a robbery at Marv's (Gandolfini) bar, which serves as a drop-off point for criminals to launder money.

The sequel to Alice in Wonderland has started filming in England; the sequel will be directed by James Bobin (Muppets Most Wanted, a lot of Ali G stuff), and is officially called Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass. The first Wonderland excursion took in over $1 billion at the worldwide box office, so I’m surprised it took this long.
As per the press release, Through the Looking Glass “revisits Lewis Carroll’s beloved stories with an all-new new tale that travels back to Underland—and back in Time.” The confirmed new cast includes Sacha Baron Cohen and Rhys Ifans. The returning cast includes Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Mia Wasikowska and voice performances by Stephen Fry, Toby Jones, Alan Rickman, Michael Sheen and Timothy Spall.
Hit the jump for the press release, which includes the full cast and who they’re playing. Alice in Wonderland:...

At long last, the sequel to Disney’s massively successful, if narratively weak, Alice in Wonderland is starting to roll cameras, with James Bobin replacing Tim Burton in the director’s chair. It took a suprisingly long time for this next chapter of the planned franchise to get off the ground, considering the first film broke $1 billion at the box office, but a press release indicates that filming is now underway.
Officially titled Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass, the follow-up finds the original actors returning to their roles, with a bevy of new stars joining both the live-action and voice casts. What the sequel is exactly about is still foggy, but the story is said to “revisit Lewis Carroll’s beloved stories with an all-new new tale that travels back to Underland—and back in Time.”
