The best in the genre
Bored_Dragon18 June 2018
By far the favorite series from my childhood. "Beverly Hills" and others from the genre can not come close. It has been aired for 7 seasons, has 210 episodes and was a springboard for a bunch of Australian stars. Maybe it's not a masterpiece of cinema, but it is best in the genre without any competition. Mostly because it's realistic. I mean, how many people in the world can relate to rich snobs from Beverly Hills... The events in this series are something most similar to growing up in Serbia that we had the opportunity to watch on television. And we all know someone who is the image of every character in the series. It's amazingly addictive and 210 episodes of 45 minutes flies by in a jiffy.

Nostalgia review
robinhio84_20 September 2022
With the reboot just released a review seems right

Synopsis: with a diverse cast that changed a lot through the seasons heartbreak high was relatable to any teen in the 90s. The episodes were short and very current. Above anything realistic and entertaining.

Analysis: In the 90s sometimes on a few days an episode of heartbreak high was the highlight of a day for a teenager

Story: all the stuff teenager are going through. The good, the bad. The friendships, dramas, fights, fun. Good news and bad news. Heartbreak High didn't shy away from the difficult topics.

Dialogue: 10/10 it's here were the series shines the most

Costume / Decor:10/10 like a real high school

Anything else: it may not have aged as well for new watchers. (I personally never went back, it was perfect as it was).

End Word: even writing the review makes me so excited about the past. It's probably the television series of my own teenage years that brings the biggest smile on my face.

The only criticism is towards the end it kinds lost a bit of the magic, but nothing can stay on forever.

great teen drama
paulspliff24 September 2002
heartbreak high is a fantastic television series from australia, and is an all round great production - from the filming to the acting itself, it is certainly on another level from your average sub-standard teen dramas.

heartbreak high is full of interesting and realistic characters, from the misunderstood Rivers to the eccentric Con. the storylines are brilliant and extremely gripping, and this is magnified by the superb acting talents on show, such as Scott Major (Rivers)and Kym Wilson (Sam Robinson. the gritty storylines do not shy away from real life issues such as drug abuse, family break-ups and troubled relationships, and this is refreshing to see in teen drama. there is also comic relief in parts, which helps present a fully rounded piece of drama. a great example of drama at its finest.

I was in love with Australia because of this TV show
nsbaska4 April 2021
Watched this show when I was in elementary school and I loved it! It's timeless and it shows real problems teenage kids are facing. Back then, I recordered some episodes on videotapes :) I was sooo happy when Netlix announced that it will be availabe on their platform. Now I'm watching it again, brings a lot of happy memories.

Parents, you should play this show to your teenage kids, it will make their growing up so much better and easier.

amazgin !!!

This is one of those u grew up with!! It was just like being in the show in those days! By far the best Aussies have made ,of course, i love BH90210 as well., ,but these two shows are totaly different, while BH is showing a tipical American way of things where everything is shiny and $$$$$ , HH shows more reality ,of how life actually really is for 99% of the ppl. Ill for sure never forget this show, and i always prefer the old days cause everything was better then, and i always say how everything sucks today, from music movies tv shows, ppl in general .. im kinda actually happy its like that cause that way ,things like HH and such get to be even more special. The only new thing thats making me have those old feelings is Stranger Things ... nothing else.

ps i forgot to say the only one thing i dont like about both HH and BH90210 .. its that the actors in both were cc 10 years older then the roles they were playing ,and thats one thing that REALLY bothers me in shows and movies .. ,..now , luckily it didnt bother me back in the days

Was so glad when I found this on Netflix it was genuinely one of my favourite programmes ever as a kid. Watching it now though you realise most of those in it couldn't act for anything! I've still watched it all though.

Great, realistic Aussie teen series
mjmclean-8112120 September 2021
This series is great. I can't recommend enough.

There are some really good story lines which many young people would find relatable.

The show is fast paced and energetic. Pushing the boundaries for its day.

Unlike its counterparts; Dawson's Creek, 90210 and Saved by the Bell, HBH is raw, fast and real!

Wonderful charectors and some great Aussie home grown talent showcased.

I do recommend.

What's with the timeline mate?
mia-for31 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Timeline is so confusing! Made it worked in the 90s but not in Netflix era. They start with being senior year and then that goes on for 4 seasons with actors being taken off the show. In one of the first episodes Nick says he is 18 but later he is suddenly 17. There are pupils that are being killed off and are not remembered even later. Aso Joddie like leaves school and then an episode after she been out of school for so long that she became famous?! So strange... obviously unplanned writing. Anyhow it bothers me so much! Seasson 1 is probably the best and most honest.

Like many others I have loved giving this a rewatch

Pure nostalgia, and takes me back to happy times watching it with my sister and chatting about the episodes with my mates at school.

The first few series feel almost like watching for the first time as I was too young at the time to have been into it.

But I bought into the characters and storylines.

It's dates and the acting isn't going to win any actors but for east watchinh nostalgia it's definitely worth a watch and was way a head of it's time back in the day.

I also like how the show tries to portray the characters as real people who are complex rather than bad and good

100-% Worth a watch on a rainy Sunday.

First 5 Seasons were the best
kittycattykins13 August 2022
Just rewatched all 7 series after dipping in and out of it as a teenager, not sure they aired all 7 in the UK, too long ago to really remember. Loved this nostalgic look at the 90's, perfect bath time TV, 45 minutes episodes of the lives of Australian high school kids. I had a massive crush on Drazic as a teenager, glad to see he is still acting, recently watched his brief appearance in The Grey Man.

Mostly for the nostalgic viewer
loveless_sorrow28 June 2023
As Australian born in the 90s, I was too young to watch this when it was being released. After watching the reboot, I decided to give it a go.

This was definitely an Australian version of Degrassi. Where it was heavily dramatise, it also held a fair amount of truth of growing up in Australia.

The first season to me, really dragged on. However, it was good to set up the characters that would then carry the second season to be an actual decent show. As someone in their thirties now, I really respected the stories from the teachers view as a contrast to the students. It shows the struggles that teachers also go through and how they can be misunderstood by students.

I feel the reason this show gets higher ratings are by people who grew up with this show. It's not a masterpiece for sure but it's a good time capsule of an era.

I don't get it

I'm sorry it must be a Australian thing!! There is no story line it's all over the place. The first episode was annoying I just don't get the hype. Most the characters are highly unlikable.

Brilliant...most of the time
rock_your_soul7 July 2003
Heartbreak High is one of my favourite tv shows. I used to love watching it after school on tuesdays? on the BBC. They used to show it on the school holidays too, but this year it aint on :( anyway.....hh was a great show when it started. The grittyness of it was brilliant but it wasnt overplayed. Each character was given an equal time in the spotlight. The story of Nick and Jody was amazingly portrayed. But things started to change when the heartley high kids had to move to another school. Sure there were still many great storylines and characters at that time, like ryan, anita, sarah, nikki etc, but somewhere along the line it seemed to loose its way. By the final series it was still good, but it had seemed to have lost its edge. That was the main selling point about heartbreak high, it was telling tough stories about un-perfect kids, sure they all looked good, but all of them did have their demons, and thats what made it so appealing. It just seemed by the end series it was time to finish. I have so many favourite characters from the show, but my all-time favourites have to be mai, anita, katarina, ryan, nikki, drazic, con, mel, danny, jody, d'espo, nick.....ok thats nearly all of them, what can i say, i love the show!

How could this show go on for so long
puneetgulati-4965110 September 2023
Completed season 1-3 and couldn't stop myself so watched half of season 4 also. I guess I have a thing about disasters or maybe I am hoping that it'll get better.

The show starts off well storywise with bad acting but as the acting get better the storyline gets worse to the point that you start to fast forward even when playing on 1.5x.

The good characters always leave the show and the bad irritating cringe characters always continue to come back and sometimes become main characters.

The whole premise of the show even for mid 90s is shocking and tone deaf. It's a show about teenagers but the only issue the show makers think teenagers go through love. It is one of the many issues in a teenager's life but not the only issue. Other topics are just touced upon and quickly forgotten. There is no resolution of story arcs or problems. Even the whole cultural life in Australia is just a side story after a point.

Inappropriate relationships are glorified. More than it being a matter of legality or morality, it's a matter of power roles and exploitation. The person who wrote that Storyline needs to explore their unresolved childhood fantasies.

I don't think the makers understand how school works in general. Anyone can leave and come back anytime they feel like. Any external person can join classes without enrollment. Any new person can enroll just before exams.

It's just absolute top tier garbage. The show makers need to go to a high shool and meet some teenagers.

No hearts broken
sean-4355413 June 2022
The acting in this show is bad . And that says a lot with the poor standard of Aus TV series actors (known as Home and Away actors) . The movie/book'storyline/ acting was also bad . If any of these actors came out of NIDA, funding must be looked at .

The premise of a teacher getting in "cot" with school student is socially diabolical and illegal.

rude kids, talented actors

This TV-series is very good, I do not think there is another realistic series about High School with so many good actors and so good storyline. It treats many important aspects of growing up, difficult times and good times. I think that entertainment today is speculative and cold. This series is not. Its about values, but not so much as becoming a pain in the butt.

Australian nostalgia
C-Diggety-Dawg12 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Recently decided to relive my early teens and re-watch this. What an absolute time capsule.

This was kind of like Australia's version of Degrassi showing kids dealing with real, gritty situations.

Agree with previous comments that some of the acting was exceptionally bad and what is it about Aussie tv/movies from the 90s and earlier where everyone seems to speak with the most nasal aussie twang you've ever heard?

Also remember even as a teenager being bewildered by the actions of some of the characters which just seemed so unbelievable. An example, in a later season a snobby exchange student quickly makes herself public enemy number one with the students, so decides to climb on the roof of the school and perform a classical ballet dance. All of a sudden everyone thinks she's cool and they all like her. Pffft. At my high school she would have been teased mercilessly for pulling something like this.

Loses some of its charm after the fourth season when there is a noticeable shift from a cast of characters showcasing vast multicultural backgrounds to a predominantly white Anglo cast and it starts to feel a lot more like Home and Away.

Also, I know everyone at the time mooned over Drazic and Anita, but for me it was always Katerina and Charlie. On rewatching it was very noticeable that Drazic was actually a total asshole more often than he wasn't.

Watch for nostalgic fluff purposes only and do not take too seriously!

The best show EVER MADE
JanetSnakehole323 July 2002
This is the best show i have ever seen in my life. Its very very very realistic, with great actors, who also act very good. This show deals with problems present today, some of them are very serious, but also there is many funny moments. My favorite characters are Drazic and Anita.

Dissapointed
ewwawatches31 December 2023
I had high expectations. I like the so-called teen drama, series that show the life and problems of teenagers. I also like the older recording format, that atmosphere. That's why I thought that , "Heartbreak High", a series from the 90s, would be a hit. Unfortunately, I am disappointed. The series has 210 rather long episodes. Gee, the problems affecting teenagers are plentiful - from drugs, anorexia to teenage pregnancy. The series may touch on some of them, but they are either treated in a low-key manner or diluted. There are a lot of duplicated plots, with characters bickering, romancing, or participating in school competitions for most episodes. One gets the impression that we are watching the same thing we watched a few episodes ago, only with a different protagonist. Some plots last for several episodes, although they don't add anything. Many dialogues of almost-adult teenagers are infantile, the reasons for their quarrels nonsensical. Some are hard to bear - such as the promiscuous Nikki, who thinks she's always right and allowed everything, or Anita, who whatever she says sounds like she's laughing and squealing at the same time. Besides, this is far-fetched as I cannot imagine that teens can be so spoiled. The episodes are either bearable or boring. The show should be shorter to be better. Rather not recommended. The real problems of teenagers are brilliantly shown in my favorite , "Degrassi" or " The O. C".

I'm past the teenage years but, man, I love this show.
psyka22 August 1999
My opinion: Callan Mulvey is the hottest guy I've EVER SEEN. Damn beautiful. I read an article on him once where he said he thinks girls like his character because they like someone who's wild and daring. I say girls like his character because he can be a self-centered smartass, tough, a rebel, but he does care for his friends and can be quite a sweetheart. Boy, we just melt for that. We all want to tame the beast. Plus he's damn funny. Oh, and he's the reason why I got my eyebrow ring :)

But even if it wasn't for this beautiful creature I'd still watch the show for all the other characters and the issues they deal with. It's eye-opening and open-minded. 20 minutes a day well spent and, well..it brings out the adolescent in me :)

Heartbreak High is one of those shows that appeal to some, but not to others. Some weeks, its interesting, others, its boring like other Australian dramas.

Some of the issues raised in class are well debated. The main problem, though, is the writers decision of cutting stars out of the show, just when the audience starts to get to know them well. Ryan and Anita were the two that I thought were the best characters, but the writers decided to move them along.

Heartbreak High is adequate. Its not the type of program that makes me want to set the recorder every week, but at the same time, its entertaining enough. Rating=3/5
