Beleaguered news director Dave Nelson (Dave Foley) tries his best to manage a staff that includes egotistical anchors Bill McNeal (Phil Hartman) and Catherine Duke (Khandi Alexander), ambitious supervising producer Lisa Miller (Maura Tierney), who also happens to be his on/off girlfriend, hapless reporter Matthew Brock (Andy Dick), sardonic secretary Beth (Vicki Lewis), and tech-happy electrician Joe (Joe Rogan), while also answering to the station's intimidating and eccentric owner Jimmy James (Stephen Root). Quotes

[Mr. James gets Matthew a set of "Fibber McGee and Molly" tapes for Christmas]
Matthew: [laughing] You gotta listen to this. Molly tells Fibber McGee to clean out the closet, so Fibber McGee goes to the closet and guess what happens?
Dave: He opens the closet and everything inside falls out on top of him.
Matthew: [stops laughing] Oh, that's what that sound is.
[starts laughing again]
Matthew: That's even funnier!

"Adequate?" Don't be sagacious...
20 January 2004 | by dregerinoSee all my reviews

NEWSRADIO is a truly unique television sitcom, probably the smartest sitcom in years! I'll take their three seasons over SEINFELD & FRIENDS any day. This series has the sense of humor of a Marx Brothers film! The jokes tend to be conceptual, and like all great conceptual humor, the plots are merely springboards for weirdness! The episode with James Caan coming to the studio to observe Bill is hilarious! When he begins observing Matthew (and Matthew's bizarre behavior)...that's classic stuff! Just like the NBC years of Letterman's talkshow, the writers on NEWSRADIO take something merely weird and turn it into hilarity by creating a set of circumstances that require the viewer to "get it". A lot of people don't...which makes NEWSRADIO a marginally popular UNIQUE gem in a television industry of repetitive crap.
