Motherhood is a challenging, stressful and inherently messy experience. Very messy. It's a wild carnival of bodily fluids: poop, pee, puke and, well, female excretions that a male such as myself has no business discussing in graphic detail. I understand and salute the multitude of sacrifices women make when they choose to carry, deliver and raise a child, and I know good and goddamn well when to keep my mouth shut about this topic -- which is just about 100-percent of the time.
As someone who believes films can be amazing empathy machines (the recent trend of abortion road trip movies has been a stark revelation for me), I do wish there were more movies that depicted in unvarnished detail the conception-to-delivery process without feeling obliged to give equal time or thereabouts to the male perspective. This is especially true of comedies. I adore "Juno" and "Knocked Up," but these...

Zelda Williams has wonderful memories of being on film sets as a kid, watching her father, Robin Williams, shoot movies like Hook and Bicentennial Man. But that doesn’t mean she inherited his bombastic sense of humor. “I’m a bit darker,” says Williams, 34. “I’m the person who laughed during Hereditary.”
Williams is putting those dark impulses on full display in her feature directorial debut, Lisa Frankenstein, in theaters Feb. 9. Written by Diablo Cody, the film is an Eighties retelling of the Mary Shelley classic (think less chemistry experiments,...

When we think of the most iconic late night talk show moments, there are a few that stand out: Crispin Glover nearly taking off David Letterman’s head, Jerry Lawler slapping Andy Kaufman in the face in 1982 and Jay Leno asking Hugh Grant on July 10th, 1995, “What the hell were you thinking?” following his June arrest for engaging in sexual acts with a prostitute named Divine Brown. We couldn’t have said it better, Jay.
Speaking with Chris Wallace on his titular show, Jay Leno remembered giving Hugh Grant one last chance to back out of the interview, which was scheduled well before the incident. “You know, he was great. Nowadays, you’d have 100 handlers. I called him up, and I said, ‘You still in for tomorrow?’ He goes, ‘Yeah.’ He said, ‘You know, I effed up. And, you know, it’s my fault.’”

Jay Leno is looking back at his famous interview with Hugh Grant on The Tonight Show.
During a conversation with Chris Wallace on Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?, available on Max and airing on CNN, the former late night host reflected on securing an interview with Grant in 1995, which was most notably after the actor was arrested for picking up a sex worker. Prior to the arrest, Grant had been scheduled to appear on The Tonight Show to promote his film, Nine Months.
During the interview, Leno was quick to ask Grant “What the hell were you thinking?” as the audience erupted into laughter.
“You know in life what’s a good thing to do and a bad thing to do. I did a bad thing,” Grant told the late night host at the time. The rest of the interview remained lighthearted with Grant explaining how the arrest impacted...

Donald Trump Jr., perhaps the most vocal of the Trump family after the former president, is speaking out against Fox News for no longer welcoming him on the network.
Trump Jr. made this claim on the conservative Steak for Breakfast podcast.
“I used to be on Fox three, four, five, six, 10 times a week. I haven’t been on in nine months,” Trump Jr. said.

As much as audiences love to see actors disappear into a role, Hugh Grant has become a beloved star largely for sticking to the genre fans know him best for. Although Grant admits he wishes he had made some different career decisions over the years, the actor has consistently seen success in the world of romantic comedies. And in a recent interview, Grant acknowledged an Easter egg from one of his most popular entries in the genre: 1999’s Notting Hill.

Hugh Grant has enjoyed decades of success on the big screen. And yet, the actor remains particularly honest and self-deprecating about himself, his work, and the business itself. In 2019, he even opened up about the regrets he has about his career and, in particular, his focus on romantic comedies throughout the 1990s and 2000s. But recently, Grant took an honest look at who he was during his college days, deeming himself “pretentious.”

The cast of Ava DuVernay’s latest film, inspired by Pulitzer Prize winner Isabel Wilkerson’s “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents,” is now complete with the addition of Blair Underwood, Finn Wittrock, Victoria Pedretti, Isha Blaaker, Leonardo Nam, Donna Mills and Emily Yancy.
The seven actors join Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis, who was previously announced as the lead in the film, as well as Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga, Niecy Nash-Betts, Nick Offerman, Jon Bernthal, Audra McDonald, Connie Nielsen, Jasmine Cephas Jones and Myles Frost.
Announced in October 2020, DuVernay serves as the writer and director of “Caste,” which adapts Wilkerson’s acclaimed book. Described in The New York Times as “an instant American classic and almost certainly the keynote nonfiction book of the American century thus far,” the book — and subsequently DuVernay’s film — examines the system of hierarchy that has shaped America.

Blair Underwood, Finn Wittrock, Victoria Pedretti, Isha Blaaker, Leonardo Nam, Donna Mills and Emily Yancy have been added to the ensemble cast for Ava DuVernay’s latest film, the adaptation of Pulitzer Prize winner Isabel Wilkerson’s Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents.
They join a cast that already includes Aunjanue Ellis in the lead role, plus Vera Farmiga, Niecy Nash, Nick Offerman, Jon Bernthal, Audra McDonald and Connie Nielson. Writer-director DuVernay is producing Caste alongside Paul Garnes of Array Filmworks.
Wilkerson’s nonfiction book is told through multiple real-life stories and examines how America, throughout its history, has been shaped by a caste system, or a human hierarchy that dates back generations, but still affects the present.
Underwood worked with DuVernay on the limited series When They See Us, and his credits include Showtime’s Three Women and Netflix’s Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madame Cj Walker.

The bar’s so low it doesn’t exactly speak volumes when I say now—of all times, for some reason—is a banner moment for spotlighting Hungarian cinema. As Kino’s fantastic Miklós Jancsó retrospective starts this weekend, Janus has unveiled the trailer for their no-less-fantastic series on Márta Mészáros, a director whose name has perhaps never come up in my years occupying cinephile circles. If film history is a narrow, unforgiving thing, so often at mercy of what’s readily available in acceptable condition, this goes beyond restoration—it constitutes something more like rescue.
And so just the trailer for this series, which runs at Film at Lincoln Center from January 21 to January 26, is a revelation: none of this sparks familiarity, even Isabelle Huppert—star of Mészáros’s The Heiresses—constituting a surprise. In conjunction with Adoption arriving on Criterion in March and an inevitable release of more restorations,...

The Mexican comedy Nosotros Los Nobles (We Are the Nobles) is getting an English-language feature take at Netflix from producers Chris Columbus, Michael Barnathan and Mark Radcliffe for 26th Street Pictures as part of their overall deal with the streamer.
The 2013 movie directed and co-written by Gaz Alazraki follows three spoiled and superficial children and their self-made wealthy father who feigns bankruptcy to cut them off, and forces them to do the unthinkable: Get a job.
Nosotros Los Nobles stands as the second-highest grossing local movie in Mexico with $26.2M behind Eugenio Derbez’s Instructions Not Included which grossed $46.1M. Nosotros Los Nobles was also a success across Latin America and served as the inspiration for Netflix’s first Mexican original series Club de Cuervos. The original movie is based on the play El Gran Calavera written by Adolfo Torrado. The pic stars Gonzalo Vega, Luis Gerardo Mendez, Karla Souza and Juan Pablo Gil.

Salaam Namaste, starring Preity Zinta and Saif Ali Khan, released 15 years ago on this day. Director Siddharth Anand says the film was ahead of its time.
"I think 'Salaam Namaste' was dealing with an issue that was taboo or not spoken about, but very much prevalent whether in India or with Indians outside. It felt like it was ahead of its time, but the thing is that there was no deliberate attempt to do something that is scandalous or trying to do something different," Anand said about the quirky comedy, which tells the story of two young NRIs in Melbourne (played by Saif and Preity), who live together, and the girl subsequently gets pregnant. Upon release, many viewers found shades of similarity between the film and the 1995 Hollywood comedy "Nine Months".

The ‘summer movie season’. Future generations might have to look up the dictionary definition, but for those of us old enough to remember, Hollywood once used to wait until the summer to flood cinemas with their most expensive and hopefully most profitable blockbuster movies of the year. ‘Cinemas’. Our kids might have to look that up too. You’d sit in a big room with lots of other people and watch a movie on a big screen. It was great fun.
The summer of 1994 had been a record-breaking affair with two bona fide über-hits in The Lion King and Forrest Gump, which between them had taken close to $1.5 billion.
The following summer failed to offer up anything that came close to matching that kind of phenomena. However, there was a pretty consistent level of quality across the board – with some noticeably stinky exceptions. In fact, four of the eventual five...

May isn’t quite summer yet but it is usually time that the networks start wrapping up their newest shows and preparing for a relatively fallow summer period. Since HBO isn’t a network, it has no such business model. But May sees the winding down of some HBO blockbusters all the same.
While there are some notable new releases for HBO in May 2020, the bigger story might be the things that are ending. Westworld concludes its third season on May 3 while new series Run wraps up on May 24. Thankfully the film losses in May aren’t too bad for HBO, unless the Agent Cody Banks saga drives a lot of traffic.
The most notable TV premiere in May is I Know This Much is True, a book adaptation starring Mark Ruffalo. This is a very bleak story coming along at a bleak time in history but perhaps those two things will cancel out.

Almost 23 years ago, Hugh Grant made a big mistake — then faced the ensuing scandal with rare-in-Hollywood candor.
Not long after making his 1995 film Nine Months, he was arrested in L.A. for lewd conduct with a prostitute named Divine Brown. “There were very talented people who made that film and really brilliant actors. Only one booby who let them down, and that was me. Not only was I terrible in the film, but I then chose to get arrested in Hollywood a week before the film came out,” Grant, 57, recalls to People’s editor-in-chief Jess Cagle in the latest episode of The Jess Cagle Interview.

20th Century Fox is beginning to court The Predator out of hiding.
Nine months ahead of release, and exactly 30 years since the launch of John McTiernan’s cult classic, the Powers That Be have begun hosting test screenings for Shane Black’s starry reboot. And let’s just say that early reactions are all over the place.
As reported by MovieWeb, prominent YouTuber ‘Mr H Reviews‘ posted a video concerning these leaked previews, though it’s since been pulled offline. With that in mind, and before we get into the nitty-gritty, we should stress that Fox’s screenings were allegedly held in secret, so there’s no way of telling if these knee-jerk reactions are legitimate.
Nevertheless, they do make for interesting reading, with many admitting that it took some time to adjust to The Predator‘s comedic leanings. This is a Shane Black gig, after all.

Shae's death really upset me.

And that was only one of several disturbing things that happened in "3.06."
In a way, Shae's death was inevitable.
Kimara's idealism led her to believe she could somehow make things better for Shae, that she could get through to her sooner or later and turn her life around.
But Shae never really wanted to testify against Billy and didn't want to stay in the shelter. She ran away and found comfort and freedom in returning to sex work.
