The “High Potential” Season 1 finale left viewers with more questions than answers, but showrunner Todd Harthan promised to address those cliffhangers at the start of Season 2.
“We have a pretty healthy plan for how we’re going to kick off the season,” Harthan told TheWrap. “I think one of the big mistakes that shows make is [saying] ‘Oh, let’s put a pin in both those cliffhangers, and we’ll get to them later,’ … you should probably satisfy one or the other so the audience doesn’t get pissed.”
After Morgan (Kaitlin Olson), Karadec (Daniel Sujata) and the rest of the LAPD spent the Season 1 finale investigating a game-obsessed criminal, the mysterious suspect showed off his game to Morgan, coming face-to-face with her before warning they’ll play again soon. 2021's "The Little Things" is a fascinating little moment in cinematic history, not only because it debuted at the height of the global pandemic, but also because it was so close to being good that it almost doesn't make any sense that it wasn't. Writer/director John Lee Hancock produced a slick and stylish noir with an ending that at least tried to subvert some well-established tropes of the genre, leaving the central mystery unsolved. Denzel and his co-stars Rami Malek and Jared Leto all gave it their best, with Denzel in particular melding his undeniable charisma with a palpable sense of mournful regret. It should have been great, and yet it turned out sort of okay.
There's also the fact that this could have been the definitive Denzel crime thriller. Back in 1995, Washington almost played the role that eventually went to Brad Pitt in David Fincher's "Se7en," but...

Back during the 2000s, there was a wave of horror movies and thrillers that were known for their big twists. In the wake of buzzy '90s megahits like "Se7en" and "The Sixth Sense," many filmmakers sought to chase the wave of word-of-mouth around constructing a tale that contained a massive plot twist at or near the finale. While third-act plot twists were by no means a new thing — the works of 19th century author O. Henry popularized the technique so much that it bore his name for a while, and Rod Serling and his writers continued that tradition during "The Twilight Zone" — they certainly became enough of a fad that, in my view, there were multiple variations on the last minute twist. There was the expertly constructed twist (as seen in those aforementioned examples along with "Fight Club" and "Saw"), which only served to expand the story you thought you had been following.

The Harvey Weinstein episode has been a dark age in Hollywood’s eccentric and colorful history. Throughout the megaproducer’s scandalous career, he has preyed on actresses, starting from Gwyneth Paltrow to Angelina Jolie. The lawsuit that unceremoniously ended his career finally landed him in prison in February 2020.

However, trauma often lingers even after much time has passed. Despite shredding the hopes and dreams of many young and wide-eyed debutantes in the field, Weinstein’s actions remained unheard of and unspoken among friends and family.
Now, in the post-Me Too era, actresses have been more confident about voicing their own stories regarding their one fateful encounter with Harvey Weinstein.

Idw Entertainment is teaming up with Steven Schneider and Roy Lee’s Spooky Pictures (Late Night with the Devil) to adapt the horror comic Dungeon by Scott Snyder and Hayden Sherman, THR reports today.
The serial killer tale ran as a five-issue comic miniseries in 2023 and 2024.
Dungeon begins “when a family moves from the Big Apple to upstate New York to escape the hustle and bustle. However, their father’s dream of a quiet rural life is shattered when he discovers a dungeon underneath their land, filled with torture devices, weapons, and a threatening message on the wall that reads, ‘Tell No One.’ The discovery sets up a paranoid serial kidnapping mystery where no one, not even the father’s child, is safe, and not even the FBI agent assigned to the case can help.”
Schneider and Lee will produce the adaptation along with Daniel Kendrick of Idw Entertainment, the screen arm of Idw Publishing.

Spooky Pictures, the company run by Steven Schneider and Roy Lee, has teamed up with Idw Entertainment to adapt Dungeon, the horror comic by Scott Snyder and Hayden Sherman.
Schneider and Lee will produce the adaptation along with Daniel Kendrick of Idw Entertainment, the screen arm of Idw Publishing.
The option deal comes as Snyder and Sherman have become among the top commodities in the comics field. Snyder, a longtime comics author, is currently writing Absolute Batman for DC, with that comic’s launch becoming the biggest-selling title of 2024. Sherman is illustrating Absolute Wonder Woman, which was also a massive launch that went to multiple printings.

Through their company BoulderLight Pictures, producers J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules have been involved with several of the most surprising and original genre films of the last 10 years, from the wildly unpredictable horror flick “Barbarian” to the blood-drenched and relentlessly intense — yet grimly funny — thriller “Becky” and its sequel. Their latest movie, “Companion” (co-produced with Roy Lee and “Barbarian” director Zach Cregger), is their most entertaining yet, an unclassifiable blend of sci-fi, rom-com, horror, and action in which writer-director Drew Hancock sustains his tonal high-wire act from beginning to end.
Lifshitz and Margules have managed to sustain a career producing original movies that don’t always have obvious comps — something that can make their films tricky from a marketing standpoint — by keeping their budgets modest enough to allow their directors maximum creative freedom. “A lot of people say, ‘You’ve got to reign in filmmakers,'” Lifshitz told IndieWire. “It’s the opposite,...

The thriller is a broad, often unpredictable genre, each film within it largely defined by a litany of subgenres and genre mash-ups. But whether taking viewers into the far reaches of the future, the unfamiliar throes of eras past, or the depths of a criminal underworld that exists in our present society, what unifies this vast and widely varied category of films is their singular ability to make our hearts race from opening to closing credits.

Former detective Pat Postiglione has revealed David Fincher's $327 million thriller gets some crime-solving details right, but called out Brad Pitt's character for inaccuracy. Fincher's best movies include plenty that focus on criminal activities, whether it's through the perspective of the people committing the acts, or law enforcement investigating what transpired. His latest crime film is 2023's The Killer, focusing on an unnamed hitman (Michael Fassbender) who seeks revenge after his girlfriend gets attacked. It's been critically praised for its dark elements and thrilling storyline.
However, at the opposite end of that are his projects focusing on criminal investigations. One of his best known movies in the genre is Zodiac, dramatizing the real-life manhunt for the Zodiac Killer in the 1960s and 1970s. In keeping with this realism, he also created Mindhunter, a TV show on Netflix focusing on two detectives interviewing serial killers. While Mindhunter season 3 was...

When Universal Pictures’ attempt at a Marvel-style “Dark Universe” flopped, Blumhouse stepped in with its own take on classic movie monsters. One of their biggest hits was The Invisible Man, which earned rave reviews and pulled in $144.5 million worldwide on just a $7 million budget.
Director Leigh Whannell, after working on The Invisible Man, shifted his focus to Wolf Man. For years, there’s been talk about a sequel focusing on Elisabeth Moss’s character, the “Invisible Woman.”
Jason Blum and James Wan have hinted that they’re open to continuing the story. However, Whannell recently told The Hollywood Reporter that he’s not interested in directing a sequel.
Whannell explained that crafting an ending is one of the hardest parts of screenwriting, mentioning his admiration for movies like Se7en, which he recently saw in IMAX.

When Universal Pictures' plan for an McU-style "Dark Universe" fell apart, Blumhouse wasted no time putting its own spin on those iconic movie monsters. The Invisible Man was among the first and received rave reviews before grossing $144.5 million worldwide on a mere $7 million budget.
While filmmaker Leigh Whannell has since moved on to Wolf Man, there's been chatter for years about him helming a sequel revolving around Elisabeth Moss' "Invisible Woman."
The movie ended by teasing a vigilante-style follow-up and both Jason Blum and James Wan have left the door open to it becoming a reality in previous interviews.
Unfortunately, Whannell doesn't seem overly interested and closed the door on stepping behind the camera for The Invisible Woman while talking to The Hollywood Reporter (via FearHQ.com).
"An ending is the hardest thing to do in screenwriting. It’s the holy grail of screenwriting, and I revere movies with great endings.

While Elisabeth has previously expressed interest in doing a sequel, Leigh says it won’t happen.

Ridley Scott clarifies how Brad Pitt was cast in Thelma & Louise, sharing a different account than star Geena Davis. Released in 1991, the road-trip crime drama remains one of Scott's most-loved films, with a story that follows the two titular best friends, played by Davis and Susan Sarandon, respectively, as they run from the authorities. Pitt memorably appears briefly in Thelma & Louise as J.D., an attractive drifter, a casting that Davis has taken some credit for in the past. Davis has revealed that she read with four male actors in total, and that she enthusiastically chose Pitt.
In a recent interview with GQ, Scott addresses Pitt's casting in Thelma & Louise, revealing that parts of Davis' account are accurate. When it came to the final decision regarding Pitt's casting, however, the director reveals that he had already chosen him prior to Davis voicing her opinion. Check out Scott's comments...

Brad Pitt’s career is like an open invitation to a star-studded dinner party where every seat is filled with iconic roles, juicy scripts, and unforgettable performances. One minute, he’s the charming, smooth-talking con artist in Ocean’s Eleven, the next, he’s the tortured soul with an existential crisis in Fight Club, and in Troy, he’s not just conquering the Colosseum, but stealing hearts like a true Hollywood gladiator.
He has dipped his toes into every genre, from heart-pounding thrillers to intimate dramas, and made each role feel like a tailor-made suit.

It has been over two decades since Denzel Washington screamed ‘King Kong ain’t got sh*t on me’ in the legendary Training Day. The Antoine Fuqua directorial got Washington his second Oscar after he had previously won for Glory. The film was also a commercial success and the legendary combo was set to reunite for an epic gangster film again.
Alas, the workings of Hollywood do not always make way for dreams and Fuqua had to give up his dream of crafting his incredible gangster film with Washington again. The filmmaker mentioned how heartbroken he was after his version of American Gangster was shelved. The film ended up being made by Ridley Scott with Washington in the lead.

When Denzel Washington agreed to star in 2001's "Training Day," his casting attracted some controversy. The issue, it seems, was that the esteemed actor had never played a villain at that time, and the NAACP was adamant that he not squander the good will he'd accumulated over the past decade or so by doing so. For Denzel, however, showcasing his diverse talent overrode any obligation to maintain his clean cut public image, and the star not only proved he was more than capable of playing an antagonist, but won his second Oscar for the effort. All of which makes one wonder about a parallel universe version of Denzel's career — one in which he agreed to play a lead role in David Fincher's "Se7en" back in 1995.

Denzel Washington isn’t just an actor, he’s a walking masterclass in how to own the screen. When he steps into a role, it’s game over, because the guy doesn’t just act; he becomes the moment. The dialogue? Electrifying. The presence? Unmatched. Now, pair that kind of energy with Ridley Scott, the visionary behind epics like Gladiator, and you’ve got a cinematic duo that’s hard to beat. That’s exactly what happened with American Gangster.
Playing Frank Lucas, the smooth yet ruthless drug kingpin, Washington didn’t just deliver a performance; he created a legend. Every glance, every word dripped with confidence and danger, making everyone watching think, “This guy runs the world, hands down.”

It wasn’t just Denzel Washington, however, who passed on David Fincher’s 1995 classic Se7en. Before Brad Pitt, Fincher had met several actors for the role of Detective Mills. He was met with some ludicrous reasons in return.
Gene Hackman passed on David Fincher’s Se7en
David Fincher is a veteran name in Hollywood now, but back in the day, he started out as a humble director just like everyone else. Fincher had his fair share of rejections, especially with a script as uncommon as that of Se7en.

As Rick and Ilsa taught us all too well on that fateful runway, there are few things more powerful than a heartfelt farewell. To provoke applause from the audience -- or, better yet, that stunned and contemplative silence as they watch the credits still submerged in the final moments of a story well told -- it is critical that a film nail its ending.
Whether through the unveiling of some mind-blowing twist, a sudden insight that changes the way you see the story, or a simple but powerfully human moment earned between two characters, the last sequence of a movie has the capacity to shape your understanding of all that came before -- in and out of the theater. As such, we've taken great care in compiling some of our favorite movie endings of all time, ranking them based on quality, impact, and cultural staying power.

David Fincher’s Se7en is a movie that people still can’t stop talking about, even years after it first came out. The dark thriller, starring Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, and Kevin Spacey, has a shocking ending that has led to plenty of fan theories. One of the most interesting claims is about a connection between Se7en and Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion.

There are some details about David Fincher’s Se7en that aren’t explicitly revealed, and one made way for a theory that claims this movie is secretly a superhero villain origin movie from a famous superhero universe. Shortly after making his directorial debut with the sci-fi movie Alien 3, David Fincher paid a visit to the crime thriller genre with Se7en. Written by Andrew Kevin Walker, Se7en didn’t perform well with critics during its initial release and was a sleeper hit. However, Se7en is now regarded as one of the best movies of the 1990s, as well as one of Fincher’s best works.
Set in an unnamed, crime-ridden city, Se7en follows Detective Lt. William Somerset (Morgan Freeman), who, one week before he retires, is partnered with young detective David Mills (Brad Pitt). Together they investigate a series of disturbing murders inspired by the seven deadly sins.

Brad Pitt didn’t hold back, and surprisingly, it wasn’t Sylvester Stallone he blamed for Hollywood’s obsession with ripped bodies. While most people credited (or blamed) Sly for turning actors into gym rats, Pitt pointed fingers in a totally unexpected direction.

When David Fincher directed “Se7en” in 1995, his reputation was strangely bifurcated. On the one hand, he was a supremely successful commercial and music video director at the top of his field, having helmed innovative and influential shorts for icons including Madonna, Sting, and Rick Springfield. On the other, his one attempt at feature filmmaking, “Alien 3,” had been a bust — a critical disappointment liked by virtually no one, including Fincher himself. Although it has since developed a bit of a cult following, Fincher disowned “Alien 3” and famously said that he’d rather die of colon cancer than direct another movie.
Luckily for him, and for us, Fincher changed his mind when he came across Andrew Kevin Walker’s script for “Se7en,” a perfectly calibrated blend of intellectual philosophizing and pulpy exploitation that ended up beautifully served by Fincher’s unerring ability to push the psychic trauma the story inflicted...

Good storytellers understand that realism doesn’t mean that the storytelling needs to be the most boring thing imaginable, while the worst storytellers make the mistake of associating blandness with realism. For example, David Fincher is probably one of the best directors working right now who has delivered some of the greatest crime dramas ever, e.g., Se7en, Zodiac, and Mindhunter. Now, Fincher rarely resorts to over-the-top action or melodramatic acting to spice up his narratives. He usually keeps things low-key, to the extent where some accuse his work of being “emotionless,” and yet manages to keep things engaging and thrilling. And even when some of his stories don’t reach a cathartic and climactic conclusion, the journey feels worthwhile. The same can be said about Memories of Murder, Blow Out, The Silence of the Lambs, Insomnia, The Long Goodbye, Ugly, Dahaad, and more. Then there’s this year’s The Breakthrough,...

By 1995, David Fincher was an acclaimed music video director whose studio-micromanaged and -mangled foray into feature filmmaking (1992’s Alien³) proved so exasperating and humiliating that he nearly swore off of making full-length movies ever again. But upon being sent a script about a serial killer who commits a series of gruesome, elaborately staged murders, Fincher found himself sufficiently intrigued to take on the project but only if New Line Cinema didn’t compromise the bleakness of the material. He got his way, and a filmmaker seemingly bound to retreat from Hollywood subsequently emerged as one of its brightest stars of the decade.

David Fincher no longer has much interest in his 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea movie, and he is ready to explain why it failed. Based on the book by Jules Verne, the movie would follow Captain Nemo and the Nautilus crew as they attempt to battle undersea creatures while exploring the depths of the ocean. Fincher is best known for his work as the director of Se7en (1995), Fight Club (1999), and Gone Girl (2014), earning him considerable leeway in the industry.
Unfortunately, Fincher's influence has not been enough to help him to get one project off the ground. His long-awaited 20,000 Leagues adaptation is now unlikely to ever come to fruition. In an interview with Letterboxd about Se7en's lasting legacy, Fincher spoke up about the movie's slow development. Using AI in filmmaking is controversial because it could replace human jobs and creativity, raising concerns about actors, writers, and crew losing work. Some worry that AI might make creative choices that lack the emotional depth and personal touch of human filmmakers. There’s also a fear that relying too much on AI could lead to repetitive and less original films.
While these concerns are understandable, one positive use of AI is for fixing mistakes in older films without affecting new releases. David Fincher recently explained how he used AI to fix a small camera error in a bar scene for the 4K and IMAX release of Se7en.
The camera had followed a character too late, showing more of the bar than intended, and Fincher took the opportunity to correct this mistake in the updated version of the film.

David Fincher has revealed that he utilized artificial intelligence to refine a pivotal scene in the Se7en 4K remaster. The 1995 psychological thriller starred Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, and Kevin Spacey, with the former two playing homicide detectives on the hunt for a barbarous serial killer, played by the latter. The Se7en 4K remaster was released to celebrate the film's 30th anniversary and ensure its technical quality matches today's standards.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly for the re-release, Fincher focused on the film's visual issues, specifically in the climactic car scene where John Doe (Spacey) interacts with the detectives. Some shots of Spacey’s character in the backseat were previously out of focus due to the constraints of the original shoot. By leveraging AI tools, Fincher improved these shots, creating mattes to enhance Spacey’s performance while making sure to preserve the scene’s gritty tension. Check out...

As he celebrates the re-release of his 1995 classic, David Fincher recalls how studios were baffled by one of his true-crime-based movies not being like Se7en. The movie, which put the filmmaker on the map after Alien 3's disappointment, starred Brad Pitt as newly transferred homicide detective David Mills, who is partnered with Morgan Freeman's near-retirement detective William Somerset for one final case, tracking down a serial killer modeling himself after the seven deadly sins. Nearly 30 years after its hit release, Fincher has crafted a restored, 4K version of Se7en, which hit theaters on January 3.
In the wake of Se7en's success, Fincher would become well-known for his work in the thriller genre, ranging from the Michael Douglas-led The Game to the American remake/adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Netflix adaptation of The Killer. David Fincher’s Se7en is all about a series of horrifying murders, but, surprisingly, it only has one on-screen murder, and it wasn’t even committed by John Doe (Kevin Spacey). Back in 1995, David Fincher brought the crime thriller Se7en, written by Andrew Kevin Walker. David Fincher has revealed how artificial intelligence helped enhance the upcoming 4K remaster of “Se7en,” his landmark 1995 crime thriller starring Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman.
In a new interview with EW, Fincher explained that AI technology helped fix previously undetectable issues. “Throwing this new kind of technological firepower at stuff was, for me, really revelatory,” Fincher said. “We ran into things that heretofore had never been noted. I mean, shots that were fundamentally out of focus that you couldn’t read on film and couldn’t read even in HD.”
Fincher added: “And then you get to 4K downsampling of the 8K scan. And we did end up going in and doing little split screens and using AI to sharpen things so that we could reestablish what was intended to be looked at.”
The remastering process took over a year, with Fincher noting it “could have been twice that” if left to his own devices.

Do you want to feel old? The acclaimed crime thriller often stylized as "Se7en" celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, ringing in 2025 with a re-release in IMAX locations that those who haven't had a chance to enjoy in theaters simply won't want to miss. That milestone also means that those of us of a certain age have spent the better part of three decades reciting one oft-repeated refrain every chance we had: "What's in the box?" If you've never seen the influential David Fincher noir and somehow remain blissfully unaware of what actually goes down in the film's heart-stopping climax, well, this is your cue to leave right now and avoid spoiling one of the biggest filmmaking twists of the 21st century for yourself.

For many people, using artificial intelligence in any form is like breaking one of the seven deadly sins. That group might not be happy when they learn that director David Fincher used AI to work on the 4K restoration of his classic “Se7en.”
In an interview with EW, Fincher ahead of the film’s 30th anniversary spoke at length about using AI to help with the restoration process, and why any discussion about generative artificial intelligence shouldn’t be so black and white as just being for it or against it.
Fincher noted that he’s done a digital version of “Se7en” twice before, once for the film’s DVD after its initial release in 1995, and again to bring it into high definition. But he said he underestimated just how much work went into again bringing it up to quality for a 4K version and that his team didn’t...

Tarsem Singh’s The Cell came at the end of a trend of 1990s noir films that merged the conventions of the genre with the aesthetics of music videos. Tarsem himself cut his teeth making music videos, most famously for R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religion,” and his first feature at times feels like an assembly of images that strives primarily for visceral impact, throwing cohesiveness to the wind.

Se7en director David Fincher has revealed what was actually in the box when they were filming the ending of the iconic thriller movie. The story of Se7en follows two detectives, David Mills and William Sommerset, who are tracking a serial killer who is targeting people that he believes represent one of the seven deadly sins. While we’re eternally grateful to the likes of Chris Columbus and Alfonso Cuarón, who transformed J.K. Given his decorated career spanning over three decades, David Fincher was initially considered to direct the Harry Potter films. David Fincher is already making headlines in 2025 as he prepares to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his 1995 thriller, Se7en, with a 4K restoration on Blu-ray on January 3.
