Almost decent
joits14 May 2004
Based on the book, this movie comes up short because it changes some important things from the book. It doesn't make sense why they made the changes, the events in the book were more interesting.

I have to say that the casting was pretty good though. Having Richard Dean Anderson play James Holland was a great choice. Its been awhile since i saw Daphne Zuniga and so it was nice seeing her again. I would have preferred another actress other than Jane Leeves to play Rachel, but I guess she did a decent job.

Overall, the movie is quite entertaining. If you've never read the book, I think you'll enjoy it. For those of us who have read the book, the ending is disappointing.

Pretty good
Petey-1018 May 2000
The passengers and the crew are in danger when they find out that a dangerous virus is in the airplane. They can't land because the virus must stay inside of the airplane. Some people are ready to shoot the plane down.Richard "MacGyver"Dean Anderson plays the captain James Holland in this thrilling TV movie. He does a great job in his part. There are also Daphne Zuniga you may remember from Melrose Place and Jane Leeves from Frasier. They all do a good job.Pandora's Clock keeps the suspense on all the time.Sure it's not a masterpiece, you should avoid this if you're expecting it to be one.But it is worth seeing if you like these kind of things. If you do I'm sure you won't get disappointed.

Flight to nowhere

Warning: Spoilers
OK, so it was written in 1996, before 9/11, so you can give it a little credit for worrying about terrorists and the idea that the CIA director makes a plot to blow this doomed plane out of the sky before it brings doom to the world, is prescient. That's it. That's the good stuff. The acting...fair. The plot...silly. The "twist"... unnecessary. DOOOOOOOOOOOM It isn't as though no one ever thought of what to do when a plane gets contaminated. Don't you think bureaucrats have a manual for "plagues" and how to contain them? Proper execution of such a plan is always a problem, as we saw after Katrina. But they have a plan. It isn't to send them off to Iceland and then to Mauritania. And if the virus is carried in the air, why was the plane door open and the "shooters' standing there with no protection? In fact, did it ever occur to anyone to shoot her legs? That would stop her. But not as dramatic. I'm a sucker. I always watch a movie to see the end, once I started it. But this was a waste of time, and for the most part, predictable. I saw it using a recorder so I didn't have to watch all the ads, that was a plus. It's a good example of why I watch so little network TV. Rubbish.

An Intelligent Thrill Ride
comquest7 October 2003
I began watching a replay of this TV movie on a Sunday afternoon, thinking it was just another dumb airplane disaster flick. I was wrong.

"Pandora's Clock" is an intelligent political thriller that is far beyond the quality of most TV movies. It could just as easily have made its debut on the big screen.

The cast is excellent, including veteran actors Richard Dean Anderson, Edward Herrmann, Robert Guillaume, and Robert Loggia. Daphne Zuniga turns in one of her best performances as a medical specialist working for the CIA, and Frasier's Jane Leeves is also very good.

The dialogue is well-written and the story is compelling throughout. In fact, the final hour is so filled with plot twists and suspense that you can't leave your seat for a second. If you get a chance to see this movie, invest the time -- nearly four hours. You will be richly rewarded!

Not smart during pandemic
BandSAboutMovies31 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Based on the book Pandora's Clock by John J. Nance, this movie draws on the author's experiences as a Braniff Airlines pilot by telling the story of a deadly virus on a Boeing 747-200. The governments of the world have left the passengers - including Ambassador Lee Lancaster (Robert Guillaume) - to die, but Captain James Holland (Richard Dean Anderson) and his crew are struggling to save them all.

Nance shows up as a high-ranking Air Force official, plus there's Daphne Zuniga, Jane Leeves, Robert Loggia and Stephen Root on hand.

One could argue my smarts in watching a movie about quarantines and pandemics and viruses while the Omnicron variant is in the news. There are so many disease of the week movies that now are not as much fun to watch as they once were.

First Rate Suspense Film
timdalton00725 October 2005
Pandora's Clock is among the best thrillers you will ever read and this is one of the best thrillers you will ever see. A highly faithful adaptation of John J. Nance's novel ,which had a frightfully real scenario in the novel,is made even more so here.

Despite being made for TV, this is first rate entertainment. The cast is great and slips into characters from the novel so well that you would think they were reading the novel. Richard Dean Anderson steps way outside the shadow of Macgyver and gives the best performance of his career to date. Jane Leeves is great her role as an ambassador's assistant in a role that proves she can be a fine dramatic actor. Daphne Zuniga is great as Dr. Sanders and despite the character being a man in the book, it works incredibly well. Robert Loggia, Edward Herrmann, Robert Guillaume, and the rest of the supporting cast are top notch and fit their novel counterparts tot he letter.

There are changes to the story of course (including and a slight change in the ending) but those changes are for the better when compared with the novel. The plot is realistic and very see to believe in the way its presented making this the best airplane set movie since the original Airport movie. The production values are high and though the special effects might look as good as they did a decade or so ago, they work fine. Sets are great, especially CIA HQ and the Oval Office showing that the filmmakers spent a lot of time to make this work.

It doesn't matter if you see this first and read then read the novel or vice versa. Just do both and you won't regret losing four hours to this film and however long it takes to read the novel. This will leave you breathless.

Gripping suspense/thriller
jhaggardjr29 July 2001
"Pandora's Clock" is a gripping suspense/thriller that's a cross between a virus movie and a disaster film. This movie, which aired in two parts on NBC in its debut showing in 1996, is about an airplane flight that becomes infected with a virus when one of the passengers just happens to be carrying this disease. The U.S. Government debates on whether the plane should be destroyed or not, while the pilot (Richard Dean Anderson) and a virus expert (Daphne Zuniga) try to figure something out to avoid disaster. I'm not really a big fan of TV movies and miniseries, but I liked "Pandora's Clock". It's one heck of a thrill ride. Jane Leeves (TV's "Frasier"), Robert Loggia, and Edward Herrmann (as the President) also star.

"Pandora's Clock" an intense thriller of the highest order
Dr-RJP27 December 2004
Warning: Spoilers
Sometimes, Lady Luck smiles on me. I had originally made -- and copied over -- a VHS tape of this wonderful TV presentation. I was heartbroken when I realized what I had done since I had been unable to obtain a copy of it anywhere else.

Recently, I subscribed to digital cable, and while searching through upcoming movies, there to my surprise was a scheduled broadcast of the movie. This time, however, I made a copy of it to DVD so there's no chance of repeating my mistake.

I finally got to watch it again after eight years, and it was just as exciting and tense as when I first saw it. There is a little bit of prelude to this story in that my first contact with "Pandora's Clock" came with a live reading of the book on public radio. I just happened to tune in to the broadcasting station on my way home for lunch, and from the first installment, I was hooked. Each day, I waited with anticipation for the next chapter to be read.

When I learned a few months later that the book was going to be broadcast on TV as a movie, I made sure to clear my schedule for that event.

First of all, I'd like to say that the movie was very true to the book, contrary to what another reviewer had said. That, in itself, is a rare achievement for TV movies.

Secondly, I agree with others about the casting. I could not imagine a better choice for Captain Holland than Richard Dean Anderson. Literally, the movie could have crashed and burned without a proper cast for this pivotal role. Anderson has never been better, and it is a shame that we have not seen more of him. In fact, all of the cast members did a superb job.

My only complaint with the movie -- and the book -- was the interjection of the "terrorist plot" to arm a private business jet with air-to-air missiles and have its pilot stalk and shoot down the stricken plane. Basically, we are talking about less than 36 hours to orchestrate and execute a plan like this one, and folks, that is just not realistic at all given all the players involved. Also not realistic was how little the airliner was affected by having first one, then two of its engines blown off.

That beef aside, I enjoyed the building suspense and found to be very believable how the reactions of foreign governments were portrayed in the film, as well as our own.

If you have an opportunity to see this movie, do so by all means.

Certainly a great TV Movie
Stevie C11 December 2004
I've seen a lot of TV movies in my time as a student, the majority the normal waste of time that US television throws out. This one, however, was well crafted and plotted and had a very nice twist at the end. Having only seen Richard Dean Anderson in MacGyver and Stargate I was surprised with his excellent performance rather than the rather gamut of expressions from A-B that he normally gives. It was a pleasant surprise to see Daphne Zuniga after quite a long time dating back to The Fly II. Also nice to see Robert Guillaumme in a leading role again. I can't say that I ever take Jane Leeves seriously after her Benny Hill days but she just about managed to cope well in her role. All in all a highly recommended film.

An edge-of-your-seat TV thriller!
OllieSuave-00718 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This is good made-for-TV thriller, where a professor contracts a deadly virus before he boards a plane with over 200 passengers, endangering the lives of everybody on board. To make things worst, the plane can't land in any country for fear of spreading the virus to the human population, and a secret U.S. government plan to shoot down the plane complicates things even more.

Eric Laneuville did a pretty good job in directing this movie, grabbing your attention from start to finish as the plot quickly identifies the story's main issue, the Doomsday Virus, which Professor Ernest Helms (Michael Winters) contracts from a thief after filming a documentary. The issue is then expanded after Helms boards a plane with over 200 people on board, threatening to spread the virus. All these plot elements and twists in determining the fate of the plane passengers and the government's secret plan to deal with the issue make this a very exciting TV movie that will give you an edge-of-your-seat experience.

The acting was pretty good for the most part and the characters were engaging; ***spoiler ahead, but does not give away ending*** just didn't like the part of the screaming mother who didn't heed to the military's warnings about leaving the plane. That scene put a damper on an otherwise suspenseful movie. ***spoiler ends***

It is a good way to spend three hours or so before the television when you have nothing else to watch. Even the title, Pandora's Clock, is an attention grabber - something that is suitable and mysterious for this doomsday thriller.

Really good movie
SRollins-23 August 1998
I really enjoyed watching this. It gripped me throughout and was quite believable. Good plot, interesting characters, and great pace.

My only quibble would be that there was a bit of over-the-top in a couple of scenes. Also, there was much material that could have been expanded on. While the close of the movie does provoke much thought, there was much that could have been added (though it would have required another hour or two) in political matters, but that's simply my preference.

All in all, a great movie. I only wish my VCR had been running.

available on DVD in Hong Kong
RLARKT1994 June 2004
On a recent trip to Hong Kong,i was able to purchase a DVD copy of this good film. The DVD region code was for all regions. So i have no problem playing this DVD in Canada. This film has an excellent cast and plenty of action to keep the viewer glued to the television set. Filmed in Germany,it starts out with a laboratory experimenting with illegal virus from Russia. One of the laboratory employee's gets infected, leaves the laboratory, attempts to steal a car, causing the driver, after a fight,to get infected. He boards the plane, possibly infecting other passengers. Britain,Canada, all other European countries refuse to let the plane land in their countries. Now the C.I.A. gets involved,a cover-up is in the plans,it is suggested the plane be blown up,killing everyone on it. A doctor, working with the C.I.A. discovers the plot, which keeps this film going till the end. I am quite surprise this film in not available on DVD here in Canada or the U.S.A. People who have the internet could probably purchase the DVD from one of the Hong Kong DVD online shops. On 12/feb/2008,this DVD was supposed to be released on DVD in Canada and the U.S.A. Well,it never happened,no explanation was given, all web sites I tried to order it from, stated, out of release,on order. Two of the web-sites I ordered it from, cancel the order,as for Amazon,I canceled the order.

Warning: Spoilers
I have to admit the only reason I watched this movie is because I am a big fan and simply adore Jane Leeves but after watching it boy am I glad to have done so. This film is simply great and although it runs for almost 3 hours I can guarantee that for the entire run your heart wont stop pounding. All of the actors did a very decent job – especially my favorite actress Jane Leeves and yes I am being partial here – no one failed to deliver. I would recommend this movie to anyone who has 3 hours and doesn't know what to do with it, you will be pleasantly surprised. P.S. the CGI is not as high tech as now a days but it is still very good for 1996

I have never seen a better film in my entire life. Great suspense, interesting throughout and its definitely recommended by me. Anyone considering watching/renting/buying must definitely do so as it is too good to miss out. The film was of spectacular standard. Pity about the subtitles on some scenes as partially sighted people may have difficulty reading these but other wise an all together great film. I got a bit confused about the ending but that may be because i was making a drink at the same time so it may be understandable!!!!!

Execelent film A***** Chloe Hill
