The 80s were a time when country music and a type of hero born of the good ol boy class that came into his own. This could be seen in shows like The Dukes Of Hazzard, Bj and The Bear, as well as movies like Any Which Way But Loose and Smokey and the Bandit. They were a time of what would be considered fun action films and TV. Again, this was personified in shows where usually no one got seriously hurt, like The A-Team. The bad guys went to the same shooting school as your friendly neighborhood Stormtroopers. But, one TV show that would personify this “nobody better get hurt” adventure series was The Fall Guy.

Mort Engelberg, a producer of the films Smokey And The Bandit and The Big Easy, has passed away. Engelberg was 86, and he died in Los Angeles in the company of his wife, Helaine Blatt, a success herself as a high-end jewelry broker.
Engelberg was producing films when he took time away from his day job and organized a famous bus tour taken by Arkansas governor and presidential aspirant Bill Clinton and his running mate Al Gore through numerous states the summer after the Democratic Convention in 1992. Engelberg served a similar role previously for candidates Walter F. Mondale in 1984 and Michael Dukakis in 1988. For Clinton, the bus tour was a rousing success. It bonded Clinton, Gore and their wives, and presenting the amiable presidential candidate as an everymen who thrived mixing with real people in cities across the country. It would become a trademark for Clinton’s successful two presidential runs.

Tom Brady might have retired (again) at age 45, but the cast of the new movie 80 for Brady is still going strong. Rita Moreno, Sally Field, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin star in the film about a quartet of friends who are determined to see the legendary quarterback play in the 2017 Super Bowl. The movie is inspired by a real-life “Over 80 for Brady” fan club, but how old are the actors who play the main characters? All but one has hit her 80th birthday.

The Grammy nominations in the rock field were some of the most controversial this year, with young sensations like Machine Gun Kelly, Maneskin, and Miley Cyrus shut out, as were more indie critical darlings like Wolf Alice and Black Midi, in favor of older veterans like Foo Fighters, AC/DC, and Paul McCartney. Still, the nominations are out, so it’s time to predict who will claim one or two wins this year in these very controversial lineups.

If 2021 has been a calvacade of bad decisions, dashed hopes, and warning signs for cinema’s strength, the Criterion Channel’s monthly programming has at least buttressed our hopes for something like a better tomorrow. Anyway. The Channel will let us ride out distended (holi)days in the family home with an extensive Alfred Hitchcock series to bring the family together—from the established Rear Window and Vertigo to the (let’s just guess) lesser-seen Downhill and Young and Innocent—Johnnie To’s Throw Down and Orson Welles’ The Magnificent Ambersons in their Criterion editions, and some streaming premieres: Ste. The rock and alternative fields at the Grammys are always interesting. Due to their eclectic mix of hard rock, alternative pop, and pop/rock, the fields are often a fun blend of commercial and critical picks, as well as some beloved industry players we see often. This year in particular, with no nomination review committees to filter the noms, who could we see get recognition in these coveted categories?

Can anything sum up the bold optimism and doomed romance of the American dream more fully than the open road? It began with the western, the image of a lone man on a horse gazing at an empty horizon, and a culture in which riding into the unknown was often the only way to survive. Originating in the 1940s, reaching its apex in the Sixties and still contributing a distinctive language to today’s cinema, the car movie speaks to that same desire for freedom, taken to an extreme. You can find it expressed in almost every genre, from the farce of the Smokey And The Bandit films to the strangeness of The Cars That Ate Paris, the starry-eyed meta fiction of True Romance and Wild At Heart and the death fetishism of Crash. Although not all the classics can be found online, it was still a challenge whittling...

To fully appreciate some of the allusions and inspirations that propel Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” you should consider doing some homework — or streaming some other movies.
Of course, you don’t have to be familiar with any of the following titles to enjoy Tarantino’s 1969-set fact-and-fiction mashup about Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio), an actor flailing in professional limbo after the cancellation of his TV Western “Bounty Law”; Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), Dalton’s long-time stunt double and close confidant; and Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie), a rising star and Dalton’s next-door neighbor. But you can enhance your enjoyment by having some knowledge of the stories behind the story.
“The Bandit” (2016)
Jesse Moss’ entertaining and insightful documentary is putatively about the making of 1977’s “Smokey and the Bandit,” but more interestingly concerned with the personal and professional bonds between superstar Burt Reynolds and stuntman-turned-filmmaker Hal Needham.

In just a couple of weeks, Burt Reynolds was slated to go in front of the camera of Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time In Hollywood. Reynolds, who died suddenly today of a suspected heart attack, was to play rancher George Spahn in the movie, set in Los Angeles in the summer of 1969 before the Manson Family murders were committed.
Reynolds, who was cast back in May and attended the Leonardo DiCaprio- and Brad Pitt-starring film’s table read in June, had received a straight offer from Tarantino, who had seen Reynolds in the 2018 release The Last Movie Star.
That feature, in which Reynolds played an aging movie star, created a host of new opportunities for the 1970s movie icon. (You can read The Last Movie Star writer-director Adam Rifkin’s remembrance of his friend and childhood hero Reynolds here.)

Exclusive: Adam Rifkin wrote and directed The Last Movie Star, the 2018 release starring Burt Reynolds, who died Thursday at 82. The iconic actor played an aging screen hero who is talked into attending a local film festival that plans to give him a career achievement award. The event turns out to be “run” by a pair of starstruck local dudes. Here is Rifkin’s first-person remembrance of the real-life screen legend.
I am utterly heartbroken by the news of Burt Reynolds’ passing. This one hits hard. Really hard. They don’t loom larger than The Bandit. And Hollywood doesn’t make movie stars like Burt Reynolds anymore. The world has lost a genuine legend today, but I also lost a friend.
Growing up in Chicago, Burt was my childhood hero. He was the coolest and the funniest, and he never took himself seriously. That self-deprecating sense of humor was what made him so likable.

Turkey’s longest-running film festival will host its 52nd edition of the Antalya International Film Festival this year from November 29 – December 6 in the culture capital on the Turkish Riviera. This year’s festival dates were adapted to accommodate the G20 Summit that took place in Antalya on November 15 &16.
Festival Director Elif Dağdeviren is returning for a second time to run the event, under the auspice of the Mayor of Antalya Metropolitan Municipality’s Menderes Türel. Iaff whose sponsors include Turkish Airlines attracted over 40,000 guests last year and brings together renowned international and national film industry leaders and artistic talent to this historic city on the Mediterranean.
This year’s festivities offer a strong line-up focusing on socially conscious fare and strong female stories from women filmmakers from across the globe. The program will also present insightful panel discussions, film forums as well as national and international competition sections vying for the Euro €50,000 Grand Prize Jury Award for Best International Film; and Try 100,000 (Turkish Lira) to the Best National Feature Film. Icelandic Film Corporation’s Fridrik Thor Fridriksson, who earned a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar nomination for his film “Children of Nature,” will preside over the International Jury. Fridriksson is also well-known internationally for his co-production partnerships with Lars von Triers’ Zentropa and Francis Ford Coppola’s American Zoetrope. Turkish filmmaker Ömer Vargı, who revitalized Turkish cinema in the 1990’s with his blockbuster films Şerif Gören’s “Amerikalı” and Yavuz Turgul’s “Eşkiya” (“The Bandit”) is President of the National Feature Film Jury.
“This has been a particularly challenging year to secure these new dates but it is more important that the festival go ahead and provide a platform for the artist to be heard,” Festival Director Elif Dağdeviren commented. “In these difficult times, it is essential filmmakers have an opportunity to present universal stories, discerning human narratives, behind-the-scene accounts to share their unique experiences to bring about a greater understanding to so many complex issues prevalent in the world today.”
Mayor Türel returns to his post after an absence of 4 years to pick up the reins of the festival and retain his bold step to offer a diversity of content to address global perspectives at Iaff and to claim its rightful place as a part of the world film festival circuit. In announcing the new dates for the 52 nd festival Türel stated, “In a time where we are going through a difficult period globally, we wish the breath of the arts will allow us to rise again and sound of music and the light of cinema will illuminate the darkness. We extend our gratitude to all lovers of the arts who contributed towards this cause.”...

D.B. Cooper leapt into history one Thanksgiving weekend in 1971. Here's a look at the mysterious skyjacker's pop culture impact.
“You hijack the flight and disappear into the night. Captain’s voice sounds tight: “be calm and it’ll be all right.” The passengers all eyes, a growing fear inside them. Vapor trails and light, all we see tonight but it’s all right.”– Everything is Fine, “Vapor Trails and Light”
On November 24, 1971, a man calling himself Dan Cooper hijacked Northwest Orient Airlines flight 305 from Portland to Seattle (a trip known as a “milk run” due to the short distance involved). A few minutes into the voyage, he got the attention of a flight attendant and made it known that he had a bomb that he intended to use unless his demands were met. What did he want? $200,000 in unmarked bills and four parachutes.

With the London Classic Car Show arriving, we salute the automotive joy of Hal Needham's Smokey & The Bandit
Arriving in cinemas in 1977, Smokey And The Bandit is an action comedy that may as well list the road itself as an added character when its end credits appear. It's directed by Hal Needham, who sadly died just a week or two ago, and it's a real testament to his skill.
With the London Classic Car Show running from Excel from 15th-18th February - details here - we figured we'd take another mooch at the film, and in particular, its finest car chase.
A long-standing stuntman at first, Needham would bring the marriage of comedy and cars to the big screen again, in the Smokey And The Bandit follow-up, and the mighty The Cannonball Run. But he marries together a cracking collection of ingredients here, in what is his directorial debut.
