  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : It's a boyhood fantasy... I must have seen this ship hundreds of times in the Smithsonian but I was never able to touch it.

  Lieutenant Commander Data : Sir, does tactile contact alter your perception of the Phoenix?

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Oh, yes! For humans, touch can connect you to an object in a very personal way, make it seem more real.

  [Data also puts his hand on the Phoenix] 

  Lieutenant Commander Data : I am detecting imperfections in the titanium casing... temperature variations in the fuel manifold... it is no more "real" to me now than it was a moment ago.

  Cmdr. Deanna Troi : [observing from a catwalk]  Would you three like to be alone?

• Borg Queen : Brave words. I've heard them before, from thousands of species across thousands of worlds, since long before you were created. But, now they are all Borg.

  Lieutenant Commander Data : I am unlike any lifeform you have encountered before. The codes stored in my neural net cannot be forcibly removed.

  Borg Queen : You are an imperfect being, created by an imperfect being. Finding you weakness is only a matter of time.

  Lieutenant Commander Data : I understand that you have no real interest in me, that your goal is to obtain the encryption codes for the Enterprise computer.

  Borg Queen : That is one of our goals, one of many. But in order to reach it, I am willing to help you reach yours.

• [a Borg scratches Data's flesh arm] 

  Lieutenant Commander Data : Ah!

  Borg Queen : Is it becoming clear to you yet? Look at yourself, standing there, cradling the new flesh I've given you. If it means nothing to you, why protect it?

  Lieutenant Commander Data : I... I am simply imitating the behavior of humans.

  Borg Queen : You're becoming more human all the time, Data; now you're learning how to lie.

  Lieutenant Commander Data : My programming was not designed to process these sensations.

  Borg Queen : Then tear the skin from your limb as you would a defective circuit.

  [Data hesitates] 

  Borg Queen : Go ahead, Data! We won't stop you!

  [Data forces himself to try to tear off the skin] 

  Borg Queen : Do it! Don't be tempted by flesh!

  [Data relents and leaves the skin alone] 

  Borg Queen : Are you familiar with physical forms of pleasure?

  Lieutenant Commander Data : If you are referring to sexuality, I am... fully functional, programmed in... multiple techniques.

  Borg Queen : How long since you've used them?

  Lieutenant Commander Data : Eight years, seven months, sixteen days, four minutes, twenty-two...

• Lieutenant Commander Data : [inspecting the Phoenix]  The structural integrity of the missile appears to be intact, but there is significant damage to various sections of the fuselage and primary intercooler system.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : We should have the original blueprints in the Enterprise computer. Commander La Forge will need to bring a team down here...

  [trying to take cover as Lily fires her assault rifle] 

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Hold your fire! We're here to help you!

  Lily Sloane : Bullshit!

  Lieutenant Commander Data : [she continues firing]  Captain, I believe I can handle this.

  [giving Picard his tricorder, he jumps down to a lower level, where Lily continues to riddle him with bullets] 

  Lieutenant Commander Data : [unaffected]  Greetings.

  [catching her as she passes out] 

  Lieutenant Commander Data : Captain, this woman requires medical attention.

  Cmdr. William Riker : [going to a console]  Western hemisphere, North American continent. Looks like a missile complex in central Montana.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Missile complex. The date. Data, I need to know the exact date.

  Lieutenant Commander Data : April 4th, 2063.

  Cmdr. William Riker : April 4th, the day before first contact.

  Lieutenant Commander Data : Precisely.

  Dr. Beverly Crusher : Then the missile complex must be where Zefram Cochrane is building his warp ship.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : That's what they came here to do, stop first contact.

  Cmdr. William Riker : How much damage, Lieutenant?

  Lt. Hawk : Can't tell. Long-range sensors are still offline.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : We have to go down there, find out what happened. Data, Beverly, you're with me. Have a security team meet us in transporter room 3.

  [heading to the turbolift] 

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Computer, mid-21st century civilian clothing. Number One, you have the bridge.

• Captain Jean-Luc Picard : First thing they'll do in Engineering is establish a collective, a central point from which they can control the hive. The problem is, if we begin firing particle weapons in Engineering, there's a risk that we may hit the warp core. I believe our goal should be to puncture one of the plasma coolant tanks. Data?

  Lieutenant Commander Data : Excellent idea. Plasma coolant will liquefy organic material on contact.

  Lt. Commander Worf : But the Borg are not entirely organic.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : True, but like all cybernetic life forms, they cannot survive without their organic components.

• Lieutenant Commander Data : Are you their leader?

  Borg Queen : I bring order to chaos.

  Lieutenant Commander Data : An interesting if cryptic response.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Data, go.

• Deanna Troi : [learning the population of Earth is all Borg]  How?

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : They must've done it in the past. They went back and assimilated Earth, changed history.

  Dr. Beverly Crusher : But if they changed history, why are we still here?

  Lieutenant Commander Data : The temporal wake must have somehow protected us from the changes in the timeline.

  [his console beeps] 

  Lieutenant Commander Data : Sir, the vortex is collapsing.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Hold your course, Mr. Hawk. We must follow them back, repair whatever damage they've done.

• Cmdr. William Riker : How many ships?

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : One. And it's on a direct course for Earth. They will cross the Federation border in less than an hour. Admiral Hayes is mobilizing a fleet in the Typhon sector.

  Lieutenant Commander Data : At maximum warp, it will take us three hours, 25 minutes...

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : We're not going.

  Cmdr. William Riker : What do you mean we're not going?

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Our orders are to patrol the Neutral Zone in case the Romulans decide to take advantage of the situation.

  Deanna Troi : [confused]  The Romulans?

  Lieutenant Commander Data : Captain, there has been no unusual activity along the Romulan border for the last nine months. It seems highly unlikely they would choose this moment to start a conflict.

  Dr. Beverly Crusher : Does Starfleet feel we need more shakedown time?

  Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge : Captain, we've been out in space nearly a year now. We're ready. The Enterprise-E is the most advanced starship in the fleet. We should be on the front line.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : I have gone over all this with Starfleet Command. Their orders stand. Number One, set a course for the Neutral Zone.

• Dr. Beverly Crusher : [scanning Lily]  Severe theta radiation poisoning.

  Lieutenant Commander Data : Radiation is coming from the damaged throttle assembly.

  Dr. Beverly Crusher : We're all going to have to be inoculated, and I have to get her to Sickbay.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Doctor...

  Dr. Beverly Crusher : Please, no lectures about the Prime Directive. I will keep her unconscious.

• Borg Queen : Do you know what this is, Data?

  Lieutenant Commander Data : It would appear you are attempting to graft organic skin onto my endoskeletal structure.

  Borg Queen : What a cold description for such a beautiful gift.

• Lieutenant Commander Data : [pursuing the Borg sphere]  Sensors show chronometric particles emanating from the sphere.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : They're creating a temporal vortex.

  Cmdr. William Riker : Time travel.

• Captain Jean-Luc Picard : What is the status of the Borg cube?

  Lieutenant Commander Data : It has sustained heavy damage to its outer hull. I am reading fluctuations in their power grid.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Onscreen.

  [seeing the action] 

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Number One, open a channel to the fleet.

  Cmdr. William Riker : [tapping buttons]  Channel open, sir.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : This is Captain Picard of the Enterprise. I'm taking command of the fleet. Target all of your weapons onto the following coordinates.

  [tapping buttons on Data's console] 

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Fire on my command.

  Lieutenant Commander Data : Sir. The coordinates you have indicated do not appear to be a vital system.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Trust me, Data.

  Cmdr. William Riker : The fleet's responded, sir. They're standing by.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Fire.

• Captain Jean-Luc Picard : [exiting the temporal vortex]  Report.

  Cmdr. William Riker : Shields are down, long-range sensors are offline, main power's holding.

  Lieutenant Commander Data : According to our astrometric readings, we are in the mid-21st century. From the radioactive isotopes in the atmosphere, I would estimate we have arrived approximately ten years after the Third World War.

  Cmdr. William Riker : Makes sense. Most of the major cities have been destroyed, very few governments left, 600 million dead. No resistance.

• Lieutenant Commander Data : I have isolated the main computer with a fractal encryption code. It is highly unlikely the Borg will be able to break it.

  Lt. Commander Worf : The Borg have cut primary power to all decks except 16.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : The Borg won't stay on Deck 16.

• Lieutenant Commander Data : Who are you?

  Borg Queen : I am the Borg.

  Lieutenant Commander Data : That is a contradiction. The Borg have a collective consciousness. There are no individuals.

  Borg Queen : I am the beginning, the end, the one who is many. I am the Borg.

  Lieutenant Commander Data : Greetings.

• Lieutenant Commander Data : I am curious. Do you control the Borg collective?

  Borg Queen : You imply a disparity where none exists. I am the collective.

• Borg Queen : By assimilating other beings into our collective, we are bringing them closer to perfection.

  Lieutenant Commander Data : Somehow, I question your motives.

  Borg Queen : That is because you haven't been properly - stimulated yet.
