  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Oh, yes! For humans, touch can connect you to an object in a very personal way, make it seem more real.

  [Data also puts his hand on the Phoenix] 

  Lieutenant Commander Data : I am detecting imperfections in the titanium casing... temperature variations in the fuel manifold... it is no more "real" to me now than it was a moment ago.

  Cmdr. Deanna Troi : [observing from a catwalk]  Would you three like to be alone?

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : It's a subspace transmitter. If they activate the beacon, they'll be able to establish a link with the Borg living in this century.

  Dr. Beverly Crusher : But in the 21st century, the Borg are still in the Delta quadrant.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : They'll send reinforcements. Humanity will be an easy target. Attack the Earth in the past to assimilate the future.

  [trying to take cover as Lily fires her assault rifle] 

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Hold your fire! We're here to help you!

  Lieutenant Commander Data : [she continues firing]  Captain, I believe I can handle this.

  [giving Picard his tricorder, he jumps down to a lower level, where Lily continues to riddle him with bullets]

  Cmdr. William Riker : [going to a console]  Western hemisphere, North American continent. Looks like a missile complex in central Montana.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Missile complex. The date. Data, I need to know the exact date.

  Lieutenant Commander Data : April 4th, 2063.

  Cmdr. William Riker : April 4th, the day before first contact.

  Lieutenant Commander Data : Precisely.

  Dr. Beverly Crusher : Then the missile complex must be where Zefram Cochrane is building his warp ship.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : That's what they came here to do, stop first contact.

  Cmdr. William Riker : How much damage, Lieutenant?

  Lt. Hawk : Can't tell. Long-range sensors are still offline.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : We have to go down there, find out what happened. Data, Beverly, you're with me. Have a security team meet us in transporter room 3.

  [heading to the turbolift] 

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Computer, mid-21st century civilian clothing. Number One, you have the bridge.

• Captain Jean-Luc Picard : What have you found out?

  Cmdr. Deanna Troi : There's no sign of Cochrane anywhere in the complex.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : He has to be here. There was nothing more important to him than this ship. This flight, it was his dream.

  Cmdr. Deanna Troi : Captain, we should consider the possibility that Dr. Cochrane was killed in the attack.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : If that's true, then the future may die with him.

• Captain Jean-Luc Picard : First thing they'll do in Engineering is establish a collective, a central point from which they can control the hive. The problem is, if we begin firing particle weapons in Engineering, there's a risk that we may hit the warp core. I believe our goal should be to puncture one of the plasma coolant tanks. Data?

  Lieutenant Commander Data : Excellent idea. Plasma coolant will liquefy organic material on contact.

  Lt. Commander Worf : But the Borg are not entirely organic.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : True, but like all cybernetic life forms, they cannot survive without their organic components.

• Lt. Commander Worf : The Borg will adapt quickly. We will be able to fire 12 shots at most.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : One other thing. You may encounter Enterprise crew members who've already been assimilated. Don't hesitate to fire. Believe me, you'll be doing them a favor.

  Dr. Beverly Crusher : But if they changed history, why are we still here?

  Lieutenant Commander Data : The temporal wake must have somehow protected us from the changes in the timeline.

  [his console beeps] 

  Lieutenant Commander Data : Sir, the vortex is collapsing.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Hold your course, Mr. Hawk. We must follow them back, repair whatever damage they've done.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : One. And it's on a direct course for Earth. They will cross the Federation border in less than an hour. Admiral Hayes is mobilizing a fleet in the Typhon sector.

  Lieutenant Commander Data : At maximum warp, it will take us three hours, 25 minutes...

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : We're not going.

  Cmdr. William Riker : What do you mean we're not going?

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Our orders are to patrol the Neutral Zone in case the Romulans decide to take advantage of the situation.

  Deanna Troi : [confused]  The Romulans?

  Lieutenant Commander Data : Captain, there has been no unusual activity along the Romulan border for the last nine months. It seems highly unlikely they would choose this moment to start a conflict.

  Dr. Beverly Crusher : Does Starfleet feel we need more shakedown time?

  Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge : Captain, we've been out in space nearly a year now. We're ready. The Enterprise-E is the most advanced starship in the fleet. We should be on the front line.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : I have gone over all this with Starfleet Command. Their orders stand. Number One, set a course for the Neutral Zone.

• Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Mr. Worf, is everything all right up there?

  Lt. Commander Worf : Yes, sir. We are experiencing some environmental difficulties on deck 16, but that is all.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : What kind of difficulties?

  Lt. Commander Worf : Humidity levels have risen 73% and the temperature has jumped ten degrees in the last hour.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Mr. Data and I are returning to the ship.

  Lt. Commander Worf : Understood.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : [to Will]  Number One, take charge down here.

• Dr. Beverly Crusher : [scanning Lily]  Severe theta radiation poisoning.

  Lieutenant Commander Data : Radiation is coming from the damaged throttle assembly.

  Porter : Aye, sir.

  Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge : And, Porter, check out the environmental controls while I'm gone. It's getting a little warm in here.

• Lily Sloane : [looking at Earth from a window on the Enterprise]  There's no glass.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : [she jumps with a gasp as he touches the protective barrier]  Force field.

  Lily Sloane : I've never seen that kind of technology.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : That's because it hasn't been invented yet.

  Lily Sloane : What?

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : There's more I have to tell you.

  Cmdr. William Riker : Makes sense. Most of the major cities have been destroyed, very few governments left, 600 million dead. No resistance.

  Lily Sloane : Okay, I don't know jack about the 24th century, but everybody out there thinks that staying here and fighting the Borg is suicide. They're just afraid to come in here and say it.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : The crew is accustomed to following my orders.

  Lily Sloane : They're probably accustomed to your orders making sense.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : None of them understand the Borg as I do. No one does. No one can.

• Nicky the Nose : Well, well, well. Look what the cat dragged in. What's shakin', Dix?

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : The usual, Nick. Martinis and skirts.

  [picking up and frisking Nicky's bodyguard] 

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Excuse me.

  Henchman : Hey, I'm gonna take that personal in a second.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : No offense.

  Henchman : [Picard grabs his violin case]  Hey!

  [Lily knocks him out with an ice bucket; opening the case, Picard takes out a Tommy gun and fires on the Borg] 

  Lily Sloane : [stopping him as he moves to physically strike a dead Borg]  Hey! I think you got him.

  [calming himself, Picard puts the gun down] 

  Lily Sloane : I don't get it. I thought you said this was all just a bunch of holograms. If it's holograms...

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : I disengaged the safety protocols. Without them, even a holographic bullet can kill.

• Lily Sloane : How big is this ship?

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : There are 24 decks, almost 700 meters long.

  Lily Sloane : It took me six months to scrounge up enough titanium just to build a four-meter cockpit.

• Captain Jean-Luc Picard : [evacuating the Enterprise]  If you see Commander Riker or any of my crew, give them this.

  Lily Sloane : What is it?

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Orders to find a quiet corner of North America and stay out of history's way.

  Lily Sloane : [shaking hands]  Well, good luck.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : To both of us.

  Lily Sloane : [seeing his look]  You're not leaving, are you?

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Lily, when I was held captive on the Borg ship, my crew risked everything to save me. There is... someone still on this ship, and I owe him the same.

  Lily Sloane : Go and find your friend.

• Lt. Commander Worf : Captain, our weapons are useless. We must activate the auto-destruct sequence and use the escape pods to evacuate the ship.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : No!

  Dr. Beverly Crusher : Jean-Luc, if we destroy the ship, we destroy the Borg.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : We're gonna stay and fight.

• Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Captain's log, April the 5th, 2063. The voyage of the Phoenix was a success, again. The alien ship detected the warp signature and is on its way to rendezvous with history.

• Captain Jean-Luc Picard : [in a Dixon Hill holonovel]  I'm looking for Nicky the Nose.

  Bartender : The Nose? He hasn't been here in months.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : [realizing]  This is the wrong chapter.

  [a maitre d' is thrown across the room] 

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Computer! Begin chapter 13.

  [leading Lily onto the crowded dance floor] 

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Try to look like you're having a good time.

  [Lily glances at the Borg at the entrance] 

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : No, no, no, look at me! Try to act naturally.

• Captain Jean-Luc Picard : [Lily screams upon coming across a group of Borg]  Come on.

  Lily Sloane : Is... is there another way around?

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : I know what I'm doing.

• Lt. Commander Worf : [suiting up for zero-G]  I have re-modulated the pulse emitters, but I do not believe we will get more than one or two shots before the Borg adapt.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Then we must make every shot count.

• Lt. Commander Worf : [observing the Borg constructing their interplexing beacon]  We should bring reinforcements.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : There's no time. It looks as if they're building the beacon right on top of the particle emitter. Once all the transponder rods are in place, the beacon will be activated.

  Lt. Hawk : Well, if we set our phasers to full power, we can...

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : No. There's a risk that we hit the dish. It's charged with antiprotons. We could destroy half the ship. We have to find another way.

• Security Officer : They're on the move again. The Borg just overran three of our defense checkpoints. They've taken over decks 5 and 6. They've adapted to every modulation of our weapons. It's like we're shooting blanks.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : We'll have to work on finding another way to modify our weapons so they'll be more effective. In the meantime, tell your men to stand their ground.

  Security Officer : Sir...

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Fight hand-to-hand if they have to.

• Lily Sloane : Watch your caboose, Dix.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : I intend to.

• Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Mr. Worf, quantum torpedoes.

  Lt. Commander Worf : Ready, sir.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Fire!

• Lieutenant Commander Data : I have isolated the main computer with a fractal encryption code. It is highly unlikely the Borg will be able to break it.

  Lt. Commander Worf : The Borg have cut primary power to all decks except 16.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard : The Borg won't stay on Deck 16.
