- It's the early 1960s in the town of Eve's Bayou, Louisiana. Named after the same ancestor that the town itself is named after, ten year old Eve Batiste comes from an affluent and happy Creole family, her father, Louis Batiste, the town's black physician. Arguably Eve's biggest issue in life is middle child syndrome, in her mind as demonstrated by Louis paying more attention to fourteen year old Cisely Batiste in dancing with Cisely instead of her at parties, and their mother/Louis' wife, Roz Batiste, coddling nine year old Poe Batiste. It is at one of those parties at the beginning of summer that Eve, waking up from an unexpected sleep, witnesses something "adult" that her ten year old mind can only comprehend to a certain extent. As the summer progresses, the bigger picture of what Eve witnessed becomes the elephant in the room among most of the family, which is only exacerbated by an incident with an all of sudden sullen Cisely. The family goings-on are set among the continuing tragedy that besets Louis' "crazy" sister as he believes she is, "psychic counselor" Mozelle Batiste Delacroix, who becomes yet again widowed, this the third time, leading to thoughts and official prognostications that she is cursed when it comes to marriage despite loving being in love as she was with all three of her husbands.—Huggo
- Summer heats up in rural Louisiana beside Eve's Bayou as the Batiste family tries to survive the secrets they've kept and the betrayals they've endured.
Louis Batiste (Samuel L. Jackson), the local town doctor with a special bedside manner, is a loving father and philandering husband. His wife Roz (Lynn Whitfield) is forced to admit her family is falling apart when her younger daughter, Eve (Jurnee Smollett), witnesses one of her father's infidelities. Struggling to make sense of what she has seen, Eve turns to her older sister Cisely, who dismisses her in fear of the truth, and then to her Aunt Mozelle (Debbi Morgan), a known psychic and rumored black widow. Unable to find the the understanding she is looking for, Eve decides to take matters into her own hands. As the heat rises so does the tension. For the Batiste family, the ties that bind may not be strong enough to keep them together, and what they learn will change their lives forever.
