Max : So what?

Max : You're a whale?
Jesse : No, but I'm trying to protect them. What he's doing is wrong and you know it.
Max : Who?
Jesse : Your dad.
Max : My dad's a salmon boat captain.
[Jesse puzzles Max]
Max : Why do you care anyway?
Jesse : If one of your friends was in trouble, wouldn't you try to help them?
Max : If I could.
Jesse : My friends are whales.

Max : A cheeseburger saved your life.
[Wesley smiles back]
John Wesley : [pauses] You were right.
Max : Hey. You made a mistake.
[Max hugs his father]
John Wesley : What am I supposed to do now? I'm a whaler. That's what I am.
Max : Not to me. You're my dad.

Max : How'd you know the whale was there?
John Wesley : Not even get a sense. You'll get it too after a while. Never take your eye off the ball, Max. If you do, either the sea'll get you or the whale will.
Max : The whale will?
John Wesley : Don't you worry. We'll get em first. I promise.

Jesse : Listen. They're close. It's quite a sound isn't it?
Max : Yeah.
Jesse : Do you know an orca is mostly water?
Max : Sure.
Jesse : But did you know that when he sings, you can feel the beat of his song. In time with the waves.
Max : Why do they do that?
Jesse : I say it's because they're good musicians, but a friend of mine thinks differently. He says the whole Earth is breathing. And that their song is the Earth breathing.

Max : Dad
John Wesley : [working on the spears] Yes Max?
Max : What if whales are like people?
John Wesley : They aren't.
Max : What if they are?
John Wesley : Max, whales are animals. They were put here by God for us to hunt. You don't get upset when you eat a cheeseburger do you?
Max : Why not?
John Wesley : Whales don't feel. They aren't people. They're just fish.
Max : Your wrong.
[Sanderson is stunned at Max scolding his father]
John Wesley : You know better than me? You're ten years old.
Max : But your wrong, dad?
John Wesley : And I've been wrong all my life. My dad was wrong and his dad was wrong, we're all wrong and you're right.
Max : You're hurting people.
John Wesley : Who am I hurting? I'm not hurting anyone.

Max : [thinking Jesse's looking at him] What?
Jesse : I've never seen him take anybody like that before. Except once.
Max : [noticing Jesse is looking at Willy] I thought maybe he was like that with everyone.
Jesse : Nah. He's only like that with family.
Max : Well, I'm not his family.
Jesse : Tell him that.
