What Hidden Truth?
26 November 2011 | by ChrysanthepopSee all my reviews

It's been said that Rajiv Rai's 'Gupt' is one of the best whodunnit thrillers of Hindi cinema. I couldn't disagree more. It's below average. Actually scratch that, it's pretty bad. A lot of money has been spilled but the film is executed in a very amateur style. Should I start with the horrendous dialogue (although the ones between Manisha Koirala and Om Puri are quite amusing), the screechy background score, the childish writing and the monotonous cinematography. The dishum-dishum fight scenes are headache inducing. The movie hasn't dated well.

Now regarding the who's the killer factor, I thought that was quite obvious right when the first murder happens. It's a little puzzling that no one realized it. Just look at the killer's feet and notice the gait in the first scene. I was hoping there would be an extended catfight between Kajol and Manisha but alas. Anyway, the final chase sequence is fun to watch. Speaking of the two women, both perform well considering the material they were given (halfbaked characters). But more than that, Manisha Koirala's ultraglamorous image and Kajol's sizzling girl-next-door look ooze sex appeal. Om Puri delivers a sincere performance. Bobby Deol is terrible as is the rest of the cast.

Some heavy editing and rewriting is required. 'Gupt' could have easily done without an hour. Perhaps that would have made for even better viewing. I only watched this for the two beautiful leading women.
