An awkward cross between insipid romantic comedy and schlocky sleepover horror fails on both counts

After Scream revitalised both the slasher and the horror genre at large back in 1996, the inevitable flood of junkier imitators arrived, less interested in reinventing the wheel and more in keeping the engine running. Quick to write and cheap to make, films like I Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legend, Cherry Falls and Valentine trotted out slightly different variations on the same formula until the films became dumber than the ones Scream had been targeting in the first place.

It tracks then that after a Ghostface reboot, with 2022’s surprisingly successful fifth instalment, the same would happen once again. Heart Eyes, a film that boasts the same production company and one of its stars, is exactly what an exec would give an easy greenlight to, an easily sellable “if you liked” knock-off. But...

It sounds like Kevin Williamson is really bringing the heat as the director of Scream 7. According to franchise star, Mason Gooding, who recently chatted with Variety at the Los Angeles premiere of Heart Eyes earlier this week, audiences can expect the killer(s) known as Ghostface to be “the most brutal he’s been” in the upcoming movie. Brutality and gore are totally up the writer-turned-director’s alley, as he’s not only the Screamfranchise’s proud papa, having also penned the first, second and fourth installments, but he’s additionally the scribe behind other genre classics like I Know What You Did Last Summer and The Faculty. Oh yeah, and he also based the tale of Sidney Prescott’s (Neve Campbell) tussle with Ghostface on a horrific real-life serial killer.

Ethan Embry may only be 46 years old, but he has 35 years of acting credits to his name, having worked on more than 100 different projects. And now he’s set to cross paths with Ghostface, as Deadline reports that he has joined the cast of Scream 7!

Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures once intended to make a Scream 7 that would have starred Scream (2022) and Scream VI leads Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, with Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon at the helm. But then Ortega allegedly asked for a substantial pay raise – and as we saw when Neve Campbell dropped out of Scream VI due to a pay dispute, these pay issues don’t tend to work out. Then Barrera was fired from the project after comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass. Landon dropped out the of the project soon after.

Variety has learned from sources that a sequel series to the beloved show “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is nearing a pilot order at Hulu.

Sources say that Sarah Michelle Gellar is in final talks to once again play the iconic title character in the untitled project, although it would focus on a new Slayer and Gellar would appear in a recurring role rather than leading the series.

Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write, showrun, and executive produce. Chloé Zhao is attached to direct and executive produce under her Book of Shadows production banner. Gellar would also executive produce along with Gail Berman. Fran Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui will executive produce via Suite B, while Dolly Parton will executive produce via Sandollar. 20th Television and Searchlight Television will produce. Berman, the Kuzuis, and Parton were all executive producers on the original “Buffy” series.

Horror reboots are all the rage these days. We recently got confirmation that a Scary Movie reboot (though it might end up being more of a "requel") is moving forward with the original creative team of Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans and Keenen Ivory Wayans back on board.

Fans were hopeful that stars Anna Faris and Regina Hall - who played Cindy Campbell and her best pal Brenda Meeks in the first four movies - would reprise their roles, and both actresses have now discussed their potential returns.

It sounds like Faris and Hall would be interested in returning to the horror parody franchise if given the opportunity.

The Wayans Brothers are reuniting for a new sequel to the slasher parody film, and Hall, who played Brenda Meeks in the first four films, opened up about returning to the franchise.

With the horror season drawing to a close, you might feel the urge to watch a new scary movie. If you’re like us, you’ll find that Scream aesthetic is your go-to vibe. The Scary Movie franchise has officially been resurrected... for better or worse!

Following April's CinemaCon announcement that a reboot of the horror parody series was in development, Deadline is reporting that a sixth movie is moving forward with the original creative team of Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans and Keenen Ivory Wayans back on board.

Keenen Ivory wrote and directed the first two films, while Marlon and Shawn contributed to the scripts and also starred. It's unknown if the brothers will assume the same roles this time.

Fans are hopeful that Anna Faris and Regina Hall will return to lead this new movie, but there's no word on casting just yet.

Rick Alvarez has also been enlisted as a writer and producer along with Fast & Furious and Sonic the Hedgehog's Neal H. Moritz.

According to Deadline, the Scary Movie remake, which was initially announced at CinemaCon in April, is ramping up its development with the confirmed return of Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans and Keenen Ivory Wayans to the creative team. The reboot, which is happening at Miramax and Paramount, will be the brothers' first involvement with the franchise since 2001's Scary Movie 2, working from an original screenplay for the upcoming project. Last December, Prime Video is gave a series order to Cruel Intentions, an eight-episode television series inspired by the teen romantic drama that starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Selma Blair, and was released back in 1999. Now the show is set to have its worldwide Prime Video premiere on November 21st – and with that date just a month away, a trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.

The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, and Original Film. Prime Video’s series take on Cruel Intentions will premiere with all eight episodes on Thursday, Nov. 21, it was announced on Thursday. The streamer also released the first trailer for the update, which features several iconic details from the 1999 movie (Kathryn’s cross, Sebastian’s black car, and, of course, a cover of The Verve’s earworm of a song).

The 2017 short film Backstroke may have a simple plot, but its cinematography, tension, and atmosphere make for an unsettling watch that anyone interested can easily see for themselves. Things are getting incredibly tense in Peacock horror series “Teacup,” executive produced by James Wan and inspired by Robert McCammon‘s Stinger. Firmly trapped in place by a mysterious force, the disparate group now realizes the threat could be any one of them in an exclusive new clip ahead of this week’s episodes.

The first two episodes of Atomic Monster and UCP’s series “Teacup” premiered on Peacock on Thursday, October 10, followed by two episodes weekly through Halloween.
