Sunday Am: A24 is calling Civil War at a $25.7M opening, largely fueled by Democrat and Liberal moviegoers, but with overperforming business in some Red state regions like the South and Southwest.
Screen Engine/Comscore’s PostTrak polled Civil War attendees’ politics reporting that 22% considered themselves Liberal, 19% were Democrats, 11% considered themselves moderate, whereas registered Republicans (6%), Evangelical Christians (6%) and politically conservative folks (5%) showed up as a minority.
The markets that overperformed were L.A., San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Phoenix, Austin, Navy hub San Diego, and conservative market Denver. But then there were these smaller regional markets that rallied, including El Paso and Waco, Texas, Oklahoma City, Albuquerque, New Mexico and Charlottesville, Virginia. As we told you, South, South Central, and West were the best regions for the A24 release, which follows journalists chronicling a divided, violent America.

Moff Gideon is back in The Mandalorian with Project Necromancer, a key part of the effort to resurrect Palpatine. The Imperial Remnant Shadow Council's internal politics play a role in the story, with hints at cloning and new leadership. Project Necromancer reveals the importance of Force-sensitive clones and their potential role in the future of Star Wars.
After being absent all season, Moff Gideon returned to The Mandalorian with a vengeance. While fans worry about Din Djarin's fate, they can distract themselves with the new Imperial Remnant lore in the episode. Specifically, "Project Necromancer," which seems to be the name given to the effort to resurrect the perennial Star Wars villain Palpatine.
The name is first mentioned in Moff Gideon's tense scene with other Imperial warlords, which he called the "Shadow Council." The scene is an interesting bit of internal politics within the Imperial Remnant. Project Necromancer is first referenced...

Filmmaker Edward Zwick, whose credits include About Last Night, Glory, Legends of the Fall, The Siege, The Last Samurai, Blood Diamond, Defiance, Love & Other Drugs, Pawn Sacrifice, and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (not to mention co-creating Thirtysomething), recently published a memoir called Hits, Flops, and Other Illusions: My Fortysomething Years in Hollywood (pick up a copy Here). This book contains some very interesting passages – like the one on Zwick’s Jack Reacher regrets, and another where he reveals how impressed Denzel Washington was by Matt Damon’s performance when they were on the set of Zwick’s 1996 film Courage Under Fire.
Zwick wrote, “As we finished Matt’s coverage, Denzel caught my eye and nodded approvingly. Later, he took me aside. ‘Who is that kid?’ he asked. I told him it was Matt’s first big role. ‘Damn,’ he said. ‘Better get my game on. He almost blew me off the screen.

Earlier this week, Crowe said he kept shooting Robin Hood despite two broken legs. Now, Stallone has upped the ante with a horrific litany of bodily abuses. Who will share their medical notes next?
One repeated theme in director Edward Zwick’s very good new autobiography Hits, Flops, and Other Illusions is the importance of practical effects. For example, when he made The Siege, Zwick managed to shut down both Times Square and Brooklyn Bridge for a few hours to deliver a palpable sense of verisimilitude. If it had been made today, “it will all be CGI and something ineffable will have been lost,” he says.
Zwick couldn’t have possibly predicted this, but by chance he happened to make his claim in the midst of a glut of actors admitting that they are so dedicated to preserving the ineffable that they managed to bugger up their bodies beyond all...

The closest comp to Ed Zwick’s new memoir Hits, Flops And Other Illusions: My Fortysomething Years in Hollywood is William Goldman’s Adventures in the Screen Trade, where he posited a definitive piece of advice on the elusive formula for hit making: “Nobody knows anything.” Although he didn’t create the “if you want to send a message, try Western Union” line that has many authors, Zwick spent a career trying to defy that adage, in directing, writing and producing a long list of great and meaningful films and TV series topped by the Oscar winning Shakespeare in Love and Traffic, to Glory, Blood Diamond, About Last Night, Defiance, The Last Samurai, The Siege, thirtysomething, My So Called Life and many others.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian producer Dave Filoni cherishes how "great" the late Carl Weathers was during their time together on the award-winning Disney+ series following the actor's recent passing.
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight at the 51st Saturn Awards, Filoni recalled his time with Weathers, who starred as Greek Karga on The Mandalorian while also serving as a director on the acclaimed show. Filoni's heartfelt tribute hailed the "energy" Weathers brought to production and believes his legacy as a decorated actor will be well-preserved going forward. “He was the best, I dunno how to describe it. Just the fact that I got to meet him, to know him… He was one of the first people I directed, and he’s such an exceptional director… and he is great on and off camera. Carl Weathers, the legendary actor known for his roles in movies like "Rocky" and "Predator," has only just passed away at the age of 76. Though not talked about nearly as much as his on-screen work, Weathers was also an accomplished director and called the shots on many shows during his decades-long career, including "Hawaii Five-o" and "Law & Order." In recent years, he's played Greef Karga on the "Star Wars" TV show "The Mandalorian." Even then, however, Lucasfilm made use of his talents behind the camera as well, with Weathers directing not one but two episodes documenting the galactic adventures of Mando and Grogu.
Most recently, Weathers directed an episode titled "The Foundling," which aired as part of the show's third season in 2023. Speaking to Hype Beast after the episode premiered, the actor-turned-director explained his approach to directing specifically in the "Star Wars" universe," which is no small thing. In short?...

When it comes to cinema, few franchises in film history hold a candle to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. Adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien's legendary series of novels, these six films are staples of the fantasy genre, and over 20 years after the initial release of The Fellowship of the Ring, their action sequences are still as impressive as any contemporary titles.
While there are many reasons that The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films have been a smash hit for decades, there's no denying that the battles and conflicts seen throughout the franchise are one of their major selling points. Watching Middle-earth's finest warriors meet on the battlefield encapsulates the struggles of heroes like Gandalf, Aragorn, and Bilbo Baggins, bringing their fight to life in a way that transcends the original boundaries of Tolkien's text.

Li Nalas' death in season 2 of DS9 was more than just a setback, as it showcased his sacrifice and reaffirmed the Bajorans' desire to join the Federation. The death of Li Nalas paved the way for the introduction of Shakaar Edon in season 3, who filled the role of a influential Bajoran figure in the series. Like Li Nalas, Shakaar only appeared in three episodes of DS9 but continued to exert his political influence off-screen, until season 6.
One of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's producers was wrong about the death of a key season 2 character. Kira and Dax's action-packed mission in "The Siege" challenged traditional gender roles in Star Trek, making the franchise better. Kira had already established herself as an action heroine, and Dax's character also emerged as an action heroine in Deep Space Nine. The positive portrayal of strong, capable women like Kira and Dax in Deep Space Nine influenced future Star Trek series, such as Discovery.
Lt. Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell) and Major Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor) flipped gender stereotypes in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and made the wider Star Trek franchise better as a result. When Annette Bening likes a project, she jumps in. That’s what happened with Netflix’s festival hit “Nyad,” based on the story of 60-ish cranky competitive swimmer Diana Nyad and her refusal to abandon her dream. When she signed on to star in Nyad’s story of swimming 110 miles in open ocean from Cuba to Florida, Bening wasn’t thinking about the details of what playing the title character would entail. She just wanted to play the part.
Over the course of her three-decade career, which has yielded four Oscar nominations, Bening’s dramatic and comedic roles have run the gamut from con artist, Machiavellian schemer, and gangster’s moll to angsty suburban housewife. But she’s never been identified as a physically athletic actress.
“I’ve always been an athletic person in my personal life,” she said over Zoom. “I’m an exercise person since I was 20.” In “Open Range,...

Despite being among the weakest episodes, "The Siege" and "The Prisoner" still manage to be a solid installments with tension, action, and important developments albeit with a few improvements to be made. Season 1 episodes like "Sanctuary" and "The Gunslinger" suffer from being derivative of other Star Wars stories or containing inconsequential stories with underwritten characters. The Mandalorian season 3, episode 6, "Guns for Hire" is the worst episode of the show which would have been improved by having a more serious tone, a plot that tied to Din Djarin's quest to recruit Mandalorians to his cause, and important events like Din giving up the Darksaber receiving a more integral focus.

Pedro Pascal insisted on scrapping a scene in The Mandalorian season 2 where Din Djarin's face was supposed to be revealed because he believes his face reveals should only come "when the stakes feel the highest." Pascal's decision to keep his face hidden demonstrates his dedication to the role of Din Djarin and his understanding of the character. He was willing to sacrifice his "human need to be seen" in favor of making the show and story work. Although Pascal's face has only been revealed three times so far, it is likely that there will be future face reveals if the stakes are high enough. Dave Filoni's upcoming The Mandalorian-era movie, featuring Grand Admiral Thrawn as a threat, could be a potential opportunity for another face reveal.
There was one scene in The Mandalorian season 2 where Din Djarin's face was going to be revealed, but actor Pedro Pascal himself stopped it from happening.

Denzel Washington has acted in 16 action movies throughout his career. Some of Washington's action flicks, like Virtuosity and The Siege, fall short due to weak scripts and lack of substance. However, Washington's best action movies are some of the greatest works of his career, delivering high emotional stakes and meaningful dialogue.
Denzel Washington has acted in 16 action movies over the course of his distinguished career, making it worthwhile to rank his many action flicks from worst to best. Washington is one of the premier actors working today, winning two Academy Awards and three Golden Globes across his 40-year career as an actor. He has earned several notable lifetime achievement awards, and in 2020 he was named the greatest actor of the 21st century by the New York Times.

Director Ridley Scott's next feature movie Napoleon releases on Nov. 22, 2023, around the same time as Dune: Part Two. The Napoleon movie promises to be one of the best period dramas and war epics of the 21st century, chronicling the rise and fall of one of Europe's most famous leaders of all time, Napoleon Bonaparte himself. To add even more impact to this character, actor Joaquin Phoenix will portray the French emperor in all his glory in battle after battle.
There is more to Napoleon Bonaparte's life than battlefield campaigns, since he was also a passionate lover and an advocate of societal reform in France. Still, many moviegoers are most excited to see Napoleon Bonaparte leading the charge in battle after battle in the Napoleon movie, and based on the trailer, Napoleon will deliver. War has always been a touchy subject for "Star Trek." Throughout the original series, the Federation had formed an uneasy alliance with the Klingons and was not on the rosiest terms with the Romulans, so war was constantly hanging over everyone's heads. There were occasional episodes involving combat or espionage, but there were no outright full-scale battles; that's not what "Star Trek" was about. A large part of Gene Roddenberry's utopian future was a devotion to pacifism. Being strong was now defined by one's ability to reason, to help others. It was no longer about might or domination.
But, it seems, "Star Trek" had a long way to go. In the episode "Patterns of Force", William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, both Jewish actors, were required to put on Nazi uniforms and read lines about how, welp, the Third Reich may have been evil, but they got the trains running on time.

“The Mandalorian” season three has been and gone quicker than you can say Grogu. The series will be looking to return to the Emmys this year after its first two seasons proved mighty popular with voters, landing an incredible 14 Emmy wins altogether as well as two Best Drama Series bids.
The show follows Pedro Pascal as the titular Mando, who searches for his place in the galaxy alongside his adoptive son Grogu, Aka Baby Yoda. Season three of the show widened the galaxy a little bit as Mando became involved in the Mandalorian uprising alongside Katee Sackhoff‘s Bo-Katan, who looked to reclaim her seat of power on the fallen planet of Mandalore, home of the Mandalorians.
Returning to the series was the ever-reliable Carl Weathers, who plays Mando’s ally Greef Karga. In this season, Greef has become a magistrate of Nevarro and rules with authority, clarity, and respect.

As a member of Yoda's species, Grogu ages differently than the other characters in The Mandalorian, making it difficult to tell how old he is in each season. Yoda lived to be 900 years old before passing in the original Star Wars trilogy, and Grogu was already older than Din Djarin at the start of The Mandalorian, so any biological growth would be almost imperceptible. However, there is some evidence to suggest Grogu's age throughout The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, as well as how much time passes between seasons.
Speaking last year, Jon Favreau suggested that Grogu is now around 53 in The Mandalorian season 3. However, Star Wars: Timelines by Kristin Baver, Jason Fry, Cole Horton, Amy Richau, and Clayton Sandell retcons Favreau's The Mandalorian timeline by placing The Mandalorian season 1 and The Book of Boba Fett all in the same year. Favreau's comments make more sense, given...

The Mandalorian season 3 brings back some fan-favorite cast members from the Star Wars series’ previous episodes and also introduces some exciting new characters into the ensemble. Returning to Disney+ for its third season, the show picks up after The Book of Boba Fett as Din Djarin attempts to earn forgiveness for removing his helmet and breaking the Mandalorian creed. After Grogu left to train as a Jedi with Luke Skywalker in the Mandalorian season 2 finale, the kid is back at Mando’s side in season 3. Following their heartfelt reunion in the spinoff, their continuing adventures in the flagship series bring them face-to-face with old allies and new enemies.
Season 3 of The Mandalorian revolves around Din Djarin and Grogu reuniting with the remaining Mandalorians in hopes of rebuilding their society while a threat gathers in the shadows. This is the first season of The Mandalorian not to feature Gina Carano as...

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker saw the return of Ian McDiarmid's Emperor Palpatine, but the Star Wars franchise is now close to retconing how this was achieved. Although the movie didn't go into detail on how Palpatine managed to survive his death in Return of the Jedi, the characters did provide a brief explanation for how he could've come back. However, thanks to the Star Wars TV shows, most notably The Mandalorian, it's clear that Star Wars is setting up a massive retcon for how Palpatine returned in The Rise of Skywalker. This will tie various Star Wars projects together and improve The Rise of Skywalker's Palpatine explanation, too.
Cloning has been a prominent plot point throughout Star Wars' history and has continued to play an important role in the recent TV shows on Disney+. The Rise of Skywalker implied that cloning was part of how Palpatine survived,...

Walker is an assassin, one of the best in the business. But this time one of the witnesses wasn’t as dead as they seemed to be. With his cover potentially blown, he needs a trip to “Reassignment Center 42” to be fitted out with a new identity, a process that he seems to be quite familiar with.
This time however there’s barely time for him to have his fingerprints burned off before the facility comes under attack by a team of heavily armed mercenaries under the command of Keates. Their target is Juliet and her protector Elda.
Director Brad Watson’s credits run more towards horror films such as Beacon 77 and For We Are Many than action, and The Siege is Nicole Bartlett’s first produced script...

There's a bitter irony in Carl Weathers' storied acting career. Despite starring in several "Rocky" movies and some memorable 1980s action movies, it was a silly Adam Sandler comedy that did irreparable damage to the actor's body.
For most of his career, Carl Weathers looked like he was cut from stone. He survived two seasons of NCAA football at San Diego State University and had a brief stint with the Oakland Raiders. After his professional football career ended, he took advantage of his degree in theater arts and made the switch to acting.
After a few years of small TV and film roles, the actor landed the role of a lifetime as boxer Apollo Creed opposite Sylvester Stallone in the 1976 film "Rocky." After four "Rocky" films, Weathers would star in some high-profile 1980s action films such as "Predator" and "Action Jackson." He would also star as a police detective in...

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the Fire Emblem franchise.Fire Emblem has always managed to give some fierce emotional gut punches through its compelling narrative. Newer Fire Emblem fans finally had the opportunity to witness this for the first time in Fire Emblem: Three Houses through the tragedy of the multiple stories told in the game.
The tragedies didn't begin there as Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War is well-known for its tear-jerking story. The first half of the game is incredibly dark with jaw-dropping plot twists and shocking death scenes. This sort of storytelling is what enabled Fire Emblem to be as popular as it is today alongside its brilliant turn-based combat.

The official trailer for The Mandalorian season 3 could hint that the show is setting up the sequels more overtly than previously thought. Since season 1 and the introduction of Grogu, Empire-based Cloning doctors, and the New Republic elements, theories have circulated surrounding The Mandalorian's sequel trilogy setup. This was only furthered by season 2, which saw more details surrounding the Grogu, Midichlorians, and Cloning come to the forefront in episode 4: "The Siege".
With the release of the official trailer for The Mandalorian season 3, co-creators Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni hint at more Mandalorian-based storytelling in the early days of the New Republic. However, the official trailer also highlights more sequel trilogy set up as the show moves further along the Star Wars timeline. While there are still over 20 years between The Mandalorian season 3 and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the show seems to be continuing to include elements that are...

Looking back at the six-part Disney+ miniseries, Obi-Wan Kenobi was really successful in one key way. It told a satisfying story about old Ben’s life before A New Hope that also bridged the gap for a few other big Star Wars characters and provided closure for lingering Prequel Trilogy storylines. All this, while also introducing exciting new characters like Moses Ingram’s Reva and bringing deep cuts from the books and comics into the fold. For anyone who loves Star Wars lore, this Disney+ show was the biggest feast of worldbuilding yet served up on the streaming service.
But not everything about Obi-Wan Kenobi worked, especially when it came to its set design and VFX, which at times were criticized for looking “cheaper” than the more “cinematic” The Mandalorian. A common complaint from fans and critics throughout the series’ run was the show’s artificial-looking sets and its seeming...

"I saw an opportunity, so I took it." Saban Films has revealed a trailer for another junk action thriller called Blowback, arriving in theaters this June right in the middle of the summer. After planning a perfect heist robbing a bank where a special stash is hidden, Nick is ready to score. One problem, his girl and the crew, have other ideas. They take Nick down in a hail of bullets but Nick doesn't die and in a race for his life, seeks revenge one target at a time. Yet another of these exceptionally generic, entirely derivative action films that no one will actually watch. The film stars Randy Couture, Louis Mandylor, Chris Maher, Benjamin Abiola, Michele Plaia, Texas Battle, and Cam Gigandet. I honestly don't know who still watches these films and how they keep getting funded, but I guess generic action films are always easy to sell. Lock 'n load.

Though the confusingly named initiative “FX on Hulu” is on its way out, FX is still bringing premium television to Hulu in the meantime.
Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by FX limited series Under the Banner of Heaven. This adaptation of the non-fiction book by John Krakauer stars Andrew Garfield as a Mormon police detective whose faith is shaken when investigating a murder involving the church.
It’s not all just FX on the TV side of things for Hulu this month, however. The streamer is debuting second seasons of its series The Hardy Boys (April 6) and Woke (April 8). There isn’t much to report from Hulu’s original movies arm aside from true crime documentary Captive Audience on April 21. But that doc about one family’s 50-year journey for justice sounds like a must-watch.

Exclusive: Edi Patterson (The Righteous Gemstones) and Cam Gigandet (Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse) are the latest additions to the cast of Universal Pictures’ holiday thriller Violent Night.
They join an ensemble that also includes David Harbour, John Leguizamo, Beverly D’Angelo, Alex Haskell and Alexis Louder, as previously announced.
In the film from director Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow), a team of elite mercenaries breaks into a wealthy family compound on Christmas Eve, taking everyone inside hostage. Patrick Casey and Josh Miller (Sonic the Hedgehog) wrote the script. David Leitch, Kelly McCormick and Guy Danella are producing under their Universal-based 87North banner, with Universal Pictures’ Executive Vice President of Production Development Matt Reilly and Director of Production Development Tony Ducret overseeing the project for the studio.
